@@Hanger1712 During lockdown, Andy (and often but not always JD) did "Chill Streams" weekly on Twitch. The VODs are on the Longest Johns Gaming channel. They played Star of the County Down several times on different streams. I think this was the first time: th-cam.com/video/5YNEEj_WPxs/w-d-xo.html
This was my first time hearing the song, so no preconceptions. Your arrangement feels rich and textured, yet pure and clear, and that feels fitting to me. I especially love that I can very clearly pick out each of your voices, and really savor those adequate TLJ harmonies. Well done, lads❤
I'm just here to third the suggestion to go listen to the Dreadnoughts version if you haven't already. All versions are great, but their original has a certain tone to it which can't be found anywhere else.
Been waiting for a properly recorded cover since Andy did it on the chill streams. Really love this a capella version as well! Also +1 on the requested cover of Diggy Diggy Hole.
Another song I'd love to have a TLJ version of is Diggy-diggy hole. I've loved when you've sung it on JJ, and a well polished version would be quite delicious. I'd also love some of the newer versions of old songs that used to be led by Josh or Anna. Wild mountain thyme, John Paul Jones, Retirement song. Stuff like that. They're so very different with other voices, and I actually like some of the newer versions more than the old ones. Oh, and Sam Hall. That's a lovely one too. Well, the topic isn't that lovely, but the song is.
I always come back to this song. I never get tired of hearing it. ♥️ The driving rhythm and catchy lyrics are addictive, and the harmonies are on point. 👩🍳😚
I had a look at this interesting story, so beautifully sung. The Esso Northumbria was built at Wallsend and launched by Princess Anne as the song says. Designed to carry crude oil, she was indeed poorly built, and only served 12 years, tho this is not unusual in the life of oil tankers. She did not in fact cause an oil spill, this is for some reason an alternative tale from the Dreadnoughts version of the song. But there have been many real oil spills at sea, not least the Torrey Canyon disaster off the Scillies, a disaster on which my aunt worked as a marine biologist for many years. Unfortunately we are still shipping the stuff about, so there are bound to be more spills. Oil tankers make up at least 40% of the world’s fleet. Staggering.
Since The Dreadnoughts published this song I was waiting for your rendition, great work guys! PS I'll have to get used to Dave's absence from now on, you definitely sound different without him 🥲
Even without Dave this is amazing as usual (he is missed). For my song recomendations I suggest a cover of Poor Man's Poison "c'mon down" or your version of "ghost riders in the sky"
The Dreadnoughts were truly my gateway to your music (particularly "Joli Rouge"). I literally heard this song at a pub yesterday and thought it would be cool to hear you guys cover it. That was fast!
a cover of 'Over the Hills' form sharpe or 'Cornwall My Home' from the fishermans friends would be amazing. and a colab of you and Colm Mcguinness would awsome

Lyrics:
'Twas late '65 at the old Wallsea Yard
She was commissioned to haul the black tar
We built the Northumbria there on the bar
Roll Northumbria, roll
For when the Egyptians they closed the Red Sea
A call came on high from the powers that be
To build a royal monster right down on the quay
Roll Northumbria roll, me boys
Roll Northumbria, roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the Empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll Northumbria, roll
Carpathia
Vengeance
Celestial call
She was the tanker to outsize 'em all
From the banks of the Mersey
To the port of Hulal
Roll Northumbria, roll
And fair princess Anne threw a bottle of wine
And watched as the giant set down in the Tyne
What lay ahead could no mortal divine
Roll Northumbria roll, me boys
Roll Northumbria, roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the Empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll Northumbria, roll
So come all you good workman
Beware the command
It comes down on high from the desk of a man
Who's never held steel or torch in his hands
Roll Northumbria, roll
For atop a wild breaker the cracks in her frame
Spilled her black guts all across the wild main
She limped away through an ocean of flame
Roll Northumbria roll, me boys
Roll Northumbria, roll
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the Empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
And it's one for the hot sun above
Two for the Empire we love
And it's three for the fire that burns down below
Roll on Northumbria
Roll Northumbria, roll
Roll on Northumbria
Roll Northumbria, roll
The end of the 7th line should read "right down on the quay". It's pronounced the same as "key", but you don't open locks with a quay.
