If you are looking for material to stand out with, there are not many modern covers of old school filk. I recommend Dawson's Christian (there are a few old versions online) a space shanty/ghost story, Elfland, and Hymn of the Nightmare. Hymn of the Nightmare might be particularly suited to your interpretation.

I moved away and lost touch. And I remember the phone call from a mutual friend that he had taken his own life. My best friend, and I wasn't there for him when he needed it. Thank you for being my friend when no one else would be. I miss you man.
I have a few best friends that have been going along with me for years since I was in secondary school. I cannot imagine if anyone of them died. May your friend rest in peace and I wish you and the friend will meet again in another life.
