Great video. Amazing talking to mechanics in rural truck fleets in NZ who took liners and pistons out on the side of the road without the proper Churchill tools. I was told by a friend in the car parts division of a local dealer that a well known diesel mechanic who operated a largish business in our town had a set of Churchill tools but because he was a bit of a Gordon Ramsay and every second word began with F, I was always a little scared to approach him about them! Now dead so theyʻve probably been thrown out. Iʻve got a paper copy of the plans for the liner sent to me by Don Kitchen who started at the Humber works at Coventry on the TS3 and spent his whole life dedicated to the piston / liner design. Its possibly not widely known but Eric Coy / Don and team also did the piston / cylinder design for the Leyland L60 motor. Don said the only reason the TS3 plans survived was because the plans were originally done on the finest Indian cotton and they kept them for the cotton, not because of what was on it! :-) Hope of interest. Shame I canʻt attach files or I could post a scan.

Supercharged 2 stroke British Engineering Marvel monstro diesel engine!! But i also didn't know that it can be restored!! Have heard tumors that it's restoration is nightmare as it's really tough!
I drove one of these for about 2 years. It was a tandem axle tip truck.

The starter is a generic one and the only part number i have on it is CES9110nd, here is a link to one on ebay www.ebay.com.au/p/748156675
but i should mention that it is a 24v.
which is fine for me but i think the Commer trucks are 12v. I am sure there would be a 12v one out there available somewhere. Cheers.

No ! The pistons come toward each other not away like a VW or WRX . The exact opposite
Sorry to be a pain in the ass and nit pick but I think it's horizontally Opposed piston rather than horizontally Apposed piston? Opposed meaning the pistons were opposed to one and other? Apposed means to place side by side. Anyway, as long as I live that supercharged high revving motor sound was so distinct and I can hear it even now howling down the road. God help you if the twin silencer broke at the front pipe! The noise was deafening!!!

@@machineryrescue You're welcome! I first learned to drive in 1963 in a Commer Maxiload when I was 9/10yo. Drove a truck before I drove a car. Became a HGV mechanic at 15yo. Forgot to say great video by the way! :)
No it is not , it is the exact opposite of a VW or WRX motor , the definition is opposed piston as the pistons are opposed not a boxer were they move away from each other at TDC
@@JosephCowen-ru7up Sorry to correct you Joseph but What I was doing was correcting his original spelling of *"Apposed"* which he subsequently corrected.
Just for clarity. The Roots Group official definition of the TS3 engine is "The engine was unusual in being an *opposed piston engine* where each horizontal cylinder contains two pistons, one at each end, that move in opposition to each other. Please re-read my original comment.
