Your Mid-Week Banjo Boost!

  • Trying something new here! More of a long-form radio program type thing. I thought maybe this would be a good thing to put on in the background while you do the dishes or something. I want to know what you guys think of it! Would you maybe want one of these a month? Or is it not really a good fit? If this sort of thing is a big hit, I thought it could be fun to maybe feature some of my youtube friends in future installments, to give the video more variety and help get their music out there! But that all depends on if you guys like it or not. Also, if I do more of these, I will try to not say Um as much. Watching it back, I was painfully aware of how often I said Um and Uh haha.

    I'm committing the cardinal sin of commenting before I've watched the whole video, but since I'm in the middle of mowing and saw this when stopping for a drink, I'm just going to say that I'm excited to see where it goes. Many of your earlier videos are some of my favorites and deserve to be featured - pumpkins, spinach, and cinnamon rolls come to mind. I'd love to see more like this at whatever frequency works for you.

    Hi Phoebe , actually I am working on a 1790 Early American Desk from New England as I listen to you.
    I Always allow the individual artists to create their own format ,style, and flavor . You're picking up good Knowledge from your teachers .... I need to get some of my music recorded for sure and you are remind me that I need to connect my microphone audio interface a mixer and have it set up because I have lost a lot of music by not having it ready. Anyways we're just a bunch of people hanging out together and checking out some tunes, and keeping it real. Congratulations on your progress

    When we use to practice in the basement with my band the drummer and I wore headsets which went into our stage 24 track sound board. Both of us were the singers so I helped hearing everything clearly in stereo. With a bit of reverb for depth. The other 2 in the band didn't want to wear them. Not something we did playing live but we did use floor monitors

    That first banjo has quite a springy step! The power went out on my whole block and I could see neighbors coming out with flashlights! I didn’t worry , just kicked back and watched this video on my phone and it was very peaceful ! The banjo with the moon on the fifth fret is definitely my favorite! The power came back on and i almost wished it had not !

    I really like it when you talk about something and also when something unexpected and chaotic happens and you try to do something about it. So I definitely like this "radio show" format more than just songs.
    (Just please don't touch the microphone while you're speaking. Pause, adjust the microphone, then continue. This way, unwanted sounds won't interfere with your voice. Or it will be easier for you to cut them out in editing. If you want to keep the atmosphere of a radio show, you don't have to cut these parts, just make them a little quieter.)

    my feedback, is that if you do edit anything, please edit out the mic adjustments, they are hard to deal with on headphones. it's nice that you usually announce it and I can shift my headphones quickly if I'm paying attention, but that's the main disruptive thing that I notice and think would smooth out this type of video. goof around, tune and tinker all you want, that's all part of the fun. I say it from a place of love and encouragement, and as someone with sensory sensitivities. thank you for sharing your lovely art!

    That mic picks up over a pretty wide range. They were designed to do that for sharing the mic. You could get away with putting about chest height and never moving it at all and you'd get a good balance of voice level and banjo level. I watch a group who records with a Zoom and they always put it about chest height and it picks up voices and guitar really well. Great playing and love the format!

    Sounds good! Yer clipping a bit (recording into the red can't be fixed in post, the signal is already distorted) but it doesn't sound bad. I'd encourage experimenting with recording by the bridge and by the neck (you'll get different flavours and different amounts of finger noise) and always record well under max levels (like 12db under). It makes boosting in post a million times easier. You can also experiment with different kinds of mics, but all in good time. Sorry for the audio nerd stuff, I simply can't help it.

  • @smadaf
    @smadaf วันที่ผ่านมา

    I'm not sure whether it's premature of me to comment only 93 seconds in to a video that's more than 46 minutes long, but my first sense is displeasure. For me, TH-cam has more than enough people showing themselves wearing big headphones in front of big microphones indoors, giving audio that sounds as if it came from a radio-studio. Part of what I like a lot about your videos, besides the music and your personality and the laidbackness and the scenery and the outdoors and the critters, is that you're _not_ doing all those modern TH-camy things-no headset, no prominently visible mic, no focused sound: you make it as if we were just sitting with you in your back yard while you played your banjo, getting plenty of ambient sound, your ears unencumbered by giant black English muffins.
    You of course should explore this side of production if you want to, and publicly if you want to. But you do also ask our opinions and tastes sometimes, and that is mine-93 seconds in.
    As for what I'm guessing the basic format is-something long to listen to while perhaps doing other things-that seems fine. Indeed, sometimes I've wished there were a long video from you that I could listen to while doing something else, especially one whose visuals were intentionally kept minimal so I could be sure I wasn't missing anything by keeping my eyes elsewhere.

    • @smadaf
      @smadaf 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @phoebesanders2487, now that I've listened to the whole show (and watched several chunks of it), there are more details to my opinion (how ever much it matters).
      *Format* (mix of different pieces, recorded at different times and places): This is fine, neither better nor worse than what's in your other videos.
      *Duration:* This is fine. I think it's good to keep up a mix in your videos-some that are 2 or 3 minutes, some that are more like 5 or 6, some 10 or 12, and some more like 25 to 60.
      I think it is important, in the long videos, to include pieces that are strongly different from one another. There was enough similarity among the pieces in this video that the feeling I'm left with (and it really is a feeling, not an analytical thought) is that I've just listened to 46 minutes of the same piece played repeatedly with some small differences, interspersed with talk. I think it's even easier to run the risk of such a repetitive sound when it's just one player on just one instrument-but you do have several banjos, so maybe changing instruments is another good way to add variety to a long program.
      *Polish of performance:* I don't care one way or the other about this. I enjoy all your playing. I don't know enough about how a piece 'should' sound, or how a banjo 'should' be played, to be annoyed by any lack of 'polish'. I like the recordings in which all you do is play a piece from start to finish; and I like the ones in which you have introductions, interruptions and false starts, and/or closing remarks. As they say, (A) 'It's all good' and (B) 'Variety is the very spice of life.'
      *Talk:* I enjoy your talk! It's fine if sometimes it's not in a video, but it is always nice when it's there (at least in all your videos I've seen, which is not all of them but is dozens).
      *Look of headphones and mic:* As I said earlier, I get more than enough of this in other TH-camrs' videos. I prefer seeing you without headphones and without a microphone in your face. I feel a little bad for saying so, especially after hearing you say "I feel so professional and cool with these headphones on"; but also you strike me as someone who works well with the fact that we can all have different opinions and politely express them to one another. Other people have other opinions, and you should do what you want.
      *Name:* "Mid-Week Banjo Boost" rubs me the wrong way. It reminds me of some gimmicky titles and formats that my local classical-music radio-station has tried over the years, none of which I've liked-such as "Daily Double Shot" (does everything have to be about alcohol or coffee flavor-shots?) and some that are _intended_ to invoke relaxation but don't. This station, somewhere in the United States, is particularly bad in its efforts to highlight the peacefulness of some classical music. It amazes me how wrong they get it, especially when others get it right. In the U.K., a commercial radio-station dedicated to classical music is Classic FM, and they get so much right: for example, when the focus of the programming is relaxation, the name of it is "Smooth Classics" (formerly "Smooth Classics at Seven") and the tagline, said soothingly, is "Relax . . . with Smooth Classics . . . on Classic FM." On my local station in the U.S., however, they try to get you to relax by talking about stressful stuff: during rush-hour, they don't just play soothing music, but also prattle on about how stressful your workday probably was and how awful it is to be sitting in traffic; one Sunday night, a certain DJ, who mostly I think does an excellent job, chose to introduce some relaxing Sunday-night music by talking about the "Sunday-night scaries", telling us that this was the bad feeling we get just before a stressful week, saying she hoped we weren't feeling them too bad. It's like "Hello? If you want us _not_ to think of that stuff, _don't_ talk about it!" What gets you to relax? Someone soothingly saying "Relax", or someone saying "Life is so awful and stressful every day. There's so much to do. Work and money and making dinner and dealing with your bratty kids and hectic traffic and a zillion other things we don't want you to think about, which is why we're pouring them like poison into your ear. So don't think about all that terrible stuff we've just named and instead, now that we've brought it up, just try to relax with two minutes of jerky pizzicato music before we give you another reminder"? To me, "Mid-Week Banjo Boost" does the same kind of thing: it implies that the week is bad, that the week contains a slump, that we're in need of a boost-let the show be a boost (if that's how we take it), without a name to imply that stuff.
      On balance, I like your title "Daily Dose of Banjo", because of the rhythm of the syllables and the alliteration. I also like "Fretless Friday", for the alliteration and the play on words. But, for me, on balance, "Mid-Week Banjo Boost" reminds me too much of the aforementioned radio-station.
      *Sound quality:* I really do prefer the stuff that doesn't sound so studio-y. In this video, when you cut to the old clip of "Cripple Creek", I was struck by how _good_ it sounded, especially because you had just said it was from quite a while ago (when you were presumably not as good as you are now) and that you hoped it held up-and then I looked at the screen and realized what the difference was: because this was an old video, it had that nice, ambient, in-the-room-with-you sound, instead of the microphone-six-inches-from-banjo sound. Different people have different tastes, and you should do what you want-but, if I wanted what sounded like a studio-album of banjo music with somebody talking into a radio mic, I would just get one of those albums . . . and experience has shown me that that is not what I prefer. There's something about a live sound that to me is so much more inviting. Example: I have listened countless times to a recording I made on my phone of a bluegrass concert nine years ago; the same group also has TH-cam videos with studio recordings-and, after briefly sampling those, I realized I had no interest in listening to them ever again. I want to feel as if I were in a real space with an entire human being making music, not just listening to the sound that happens when a musical instrument is put into action near a microphone. It's different for something like, say, rock or pop or techno-but, when the kind of music is so analog and natural as banjo music is, and the talk is so familiar and casual and easy and nice and unscripted as yours is, I want the quality of the sound to go along with that, instead of feeling so . . . shaped and worked and produced and edited and electronicized.
      That's the end of my spiel. I know it's unusually long. Maybe it has some value for you; I'm sorry if it doesn't. Thanks for listening.
