Austell is located at the junction of two major Norfolk Southern lines: the Atlanta North District (of the Georgia Division) between Atlanta and Chattanooga, and the East End District (of the Alabama Division) continuing west to Birmingham. Both are former Southern Railway lines.
The Atlanta North District was originally the broad-gauge East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad, dating from 1836 (later the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Railway after 1869, then the Southern from 1894).
The East End District was originally the Georgia Pacific Railroad, dating from 1854 (later the Georgia Pacific Railway after 1881, then the Southern from 1894). The line west to Birmingham was completed in 1883.
The NS Austell Intermodal Yard is just to the West.
