    Happy to see this featured. I am always championing this one as being undeservedly overlooked. I have introduced it to Hitchcock and non-Hitchcock fans alike. It has a lot of charm and wonderful dialogue. BTW If you get the chance to see this on blu-ray, it is absolutely eye-popping.

    I agree that this movie is very cozy & whimsical with its beautiful autumn setting. It is one of my top favorite Hitchcock movies in part because of how obscure & different it is to cliché Hitchcock. Though it's very subtle & dry in its delivery, I'm not surprised it's not as known as other classic movies in general. I've seen it enough on my own to nearly memorize it, so I think my next rewatch will be with a group of friends so I can introduce this movie to others.

    I've only seen this one once...about 35 years ago when I was in my teens. I liked it but need to see it again. Bernard Herrmann is my very favorite film composer and I have the score. Cozy and dark is a great description.

    _The Trouble With Harry_ is probably my favorite Hitchcock film! It's very charming, sometimes dark but not troubling, and visually gorgeous. It is, as has been noted, the most English of Hitchcock's American films in its emotional quietness as well as its quaint rural setting. And Herrmann's memorable score fits the wry tone of the story perfectly. I have only two issues with it: Hitchcock's refusal to shoot dialog scenes on location means we see a lot of very elaborate "outdoor" sets; and John Forsythe's immaculate hair and clothing are not at all appropriate for a bohemian artist.

    I have always loved the scene in which Sam sells his paintings to a passing millionaire (played by Parker Fennelly of Titus Moody fame) in exchange for fulfilling everyone's dreams. Your word "whimsical" applies, and Fennelly plays along with North-of-Boston gusto. After hearing Captain Wiles's hunter wish list, he writes down, "Davy Crockett, The Works." I really enjoyed your review.

    Jerome, This film is Hitchcocks answer to the Ealing Comedies of the early '50's. i.e. The Lavender Hill Mob or The Ladykillers. Cheers, Chris Perry.

    I adore this movie. It gets so little popular attention, but it's such a hilarious - and beautiful! - film. I also love the music, the first score Herrmann wrote for Hitchcock, with its wistful and lovely autumn theme. It's in my top ten Hitchcock films.

    The Trouble with Harry is a film deserving of more love and I'm very happy you've decided to review it and at such a perfect time, I love Autumn, its colours, the sound of crinkled leaves under foot, it's probably my favourite time of year and The Trouble with Harry really does capture it's beauty, while I'm uncertain if I'd put the film in my top five Hitchcock films it is one I've always enjoyed, it's partially that wicked morbid humour of Hitchcock's that's also sprinkled in Shadow of a Doubt, that and the pleasant optimism that comes with new found companionship or friendship between the characters as well, it's fun, charming and absolutely has a cosy feel to it, as does this excellent review. :)🍁 ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

      Shirley once revealed in an interview that she had been working in the chorus of a few stageplays before she got this role and hadn't had a good meal in 2 years, so she became Hitchcock's "eating partner" scarfing up all she could since the studio provided three meals a day catered and she gaining 15 pounds during the filming. Thank you so much for this one! The Trouble With Harry, along with Rope, is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. Rope being my absolute favorite. Quirky is right, and I love this movie for it. I sometimes describe it as Hitchcock's "comedy". Every time I watch it I find myself giggling in disbelief to these oddballs and their ever escalating clandestine affairs. I think you nailed this review. I wouldn't recommend this as a Hitchcock movie, instead I'd recommend for a fun watch for a lazy afternoon.

    Interesting fact. When the millionaire stops to look at the paintings the first time, Wiggy looks out the window from inside the store. There is a man walking past in the background. That man is Alfred Hitchcock. It's right around the 22 minute mark in the film.

    That Bernard Herrmann score is bit more than bass clarinet grotesqueries. The composer was so proud of his music that in 1969 (after his bitter fallout with Hitchcock over the Torn Curtain score) he rearranged and reshuffled the themes from The Trouble With Harry into a concert piece: Portrait of Hitch. A good performance is here: th-cam.com/video/RyYMYx8O3fk/w-d-xo.html

    Interesting that you mention the fall New England landscape. There were "outdoor" scenes that they had to shoot in California because of bad weather in Vermont. To get the right look, Hitchcock had leaves shipped to California, where they pinned them onto trees on a soundstage.
    Hitchcock decided that Shirley MacLaine was too thin, so he "helped" her by inviting her to breakfast every morning. He never hit on her; he just thought she needed to be fed. She gained fifteen pounds as a result.

    • @JeromeWeiselberry
      @JeromeWeiselberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can tell that certain scenes were filmed on a set. Other external shots are the real thing, though. Makes sense that the weather would be tough to work with. It's an unpredictable season.

    • @ThreadBomb
      @ThreadBomb 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hitchcock never filmed dialogue on location, so if he had to shoot an outdoor dialogue scene he would shoot it on a studio set. You can see this in all his movies.

    The Trouble With Harry, is a great film for many reasons. It is a departure from the standard Hitchcock film and it shows that he was willing to experiment in tension as, although comedic, there are a number of scenes where the deputy or others chose not to look one way or the other and miss the body. I think my favorite line is when the spinster says "I've never been to a do it yourself burial" and the sea captain replies "I've been to four, all on the same day" (or something along those lines). The way that Edmund Gwenn delivers that line with such a tired resignation is the sign of a superb character actor. Trivia, Ed Gwenn won an Academy Award (Best Supporting Actor) for playing Santa in the original "Miracle on 34th Street".

    This is a great example of Hitchcock himself, personally, not calling the police, the macabre aspect of the whole situation, the dark but fun humor, for me it if I did not know it was a Hitchcock film, would have guessed so, always reminds of a Star Trek episode “Trouble With Trebbles” a outlier in the series, Every artist should have at least one “fun” project to show a different side, all in all still a above average film and most enjoyable

    "Romey," thank you very much. Trouble is a movie I've never gotten through when it pops up, I never get swept up in it and I wonder if it's worth the "trouble," but now you've given me incentive. First things first: is that a teddy bear lying down behind your right shoulder? Interesting to see your background look more ursine than avian, but then perhaps that fits the "whimsical" and "cozy" vibe you testify to. Near-inevitably this brings two other movies to mind, one being Family Plot. I've watched Plot a couple of times but it's a bit of "work" for me to watch, I have to show it a deliberate kindly forbearance to make it through -- yet I enjoy it, and now I'm eager to see if I might enjoy Trouble more. On the "nothing brings people together like a dead body" front, I highly recommend Stand By Me. It's based on a Stephen King novella but there's nothing supernatural or monstrous about it. It's a study in nostalgia, which usually I don't care about, but Stand By Me is done right and it works -- it was the first film adaptation King ever liked. As for Trouble, I might watch it just for the cast. When I saw that big sketch of Harry's face I thought "Vincent Price!" No such luck, Harry is not Vincent Price -- but wouldn't it be cool if he had been? It also might be fun to ask myself "Why is Santa Claus trying to bury this man?" I also might simply want to watch Shirley MacLaine's debut. Congratulations on a persuasive recommendation, Rome, and owl be seeing you -- with an eye out for bears.

    Whimsical is the perfect word to describe this movie. I came across it by chance sometime last year here on the tube, and having seen just about every Hitch film long before, was pleased to find it. Is it anywhere near his top films? of course not! but it's a departure from his usual work (kind of like Scorsese's "King of Comedy" in between "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" - a breather from the more usual dark subject matter) I stuck with it and enjoyed it, and Shirley MacLaine was so cute! Hey, it's Halloween season, ya gotta throw us some horror reviews!

    "Wacky" is how I would describe this movie. I have never seen this movie before, but I like it. It is certainly a more effective comedy than the embarrasing Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Shirley MacClain is young and beautiful here. A far cry from what she is known as more recently - "wacky". I wouldn't classify this as a screwball comedy - much of the comedy is low-key and understated. The setting is quite beautiful. I've been to Vermont a couple of times and it did not dissapoint. Not a whole lot to say about this movie. Couple of random things that I liked about it:
    1. Edmund Gwenn saying something like, "there couldn't be more traffic if I sold tickets" when he was trying to move the body.
    2. John Forsythe's character ignoring the man wanting to buy his paintings because he wants to go cut Gravely's hair.
    3. The kid saying that the dead rabbit was worth something - it got him a frog. Of course, also two muffins later on.
    4. Selling the paintings and not thinking of himself until only when asked. He was giving everyone else something.
