    That intro was totally a Kerbal Space Program launch. Messed up staging, summoned the rage of the kraken by having something spinning too fast, and just a short, disappointed “oh” at the self destruction. Now all you have to do is revert to vehicle assembly and you’ll be good to go.

    I know this project is 20 months old already (this is the first time I've seen it) but I just wanted to mention that the torque reaction from the spinning prop and motor seem to give the craft some yaw stability issues. I wonder if canting the fins slightly in the opposite direction wouldn't help counteract that effect, at least once it gets up to speed.

    • @codyics

      Typically counter-rotating props are used for coaxial helicopters. Lots of kids toys are made that way.

  • @chadfrazer4257
    @chadfrazer4257 3 ปีที่แล้ว +170

    Engineer type here, for your next upgrade use liquid electrical tape on the ESC wire connector pads, then use common electrical tape to waterproof your ESC, this will eliminate the chance of shorting your ESC if it gets wet from grass or condensation. Look into a counter rotating motor, it has TWO props that spin opposite of each other. When you scale this up (which who wouldn't!) you'll find that the torque generated by a single prop will start to rotate the rocket which is wasted energy after a certain amount of rotation (some rotation aids in stability, past that it's wasted). This was VERY entertaining! Thanks for making this and having the brains to give it a go!

    Use contra-rotating props, so energy isn't lost to the rotation of the "rocket" body and for stability. Notice the twisting and resulting failure of the rocket during and shortly after takeoff in the first trial. Contra-rotating props would eliminate that problem and allow for maximum thrust without twisting/failure. (Edit: Autocorrect typo fixed)

It may also be useful to have a larger or multi-blade propeller so as to maximise the downward thrust efficiency

      All known batteries have some form of memory effect that is with battery cycling (charging and depletion). Some batteries are better than others. For example Aluminum Oxide batteries tend to have really bad charge memory effects.
      NiCd batteries are just more well known because of their extensive use and more pronounced memory effect. Lithium ion or NiMH have much longer life, but they eventually do experience voltage drops or a lowering of charge capacity.
      On the flipside capacitors don't have any chemical reactions, and as a result they do not experience these loses or buildup of inert nonreactive salts... no matter how much they are charged/discharged.

      He just needs good ol’ tri-blade race props. Smack into a tree at 80mph, slightly bend back one of your prop blades, and go hammering it through the trees again on your race mini quads! The old props seemed to be more brittle than icicles and would break on almost anything even 5 mph epic slow airplane crashes or slight bumps. Modern props use better materials with plastics that are more rigid (holding aerodynamic shape and efficiency at high power), as well as taking a beating and allowing more than hairline flexing. Plus they seem to bend back about 20 times, whereas the old ones had a fatigue limit of seemingly 1 crash, and maybe it would be sorta flyable at low throttle and vibrating, or maybe the props would explode...
      It’s a good thing we have modern props, because I crash a lot! So much better than the old ones.... they do need to become more available in the 9-12 inch size though, those all seem to be old school materials (besides carbon, but those just aren’t as cheap to crash like I do)

    Well before there were supercapacitors there were explosive electrolytics. My career at Hughes Aircraft began in 1964. In the first laboratory in which I was assigned to do some thermal testing, a time consuming process as the oven comes up to temperature, I had the opportunity to gaze up at the ceiling tiles. There I saw the remaining aluminium casings of what had been a couple of large electrolytic power supply filter capacitors. They were firmly embedded into the acoustic fiber tiles. I asked the older technicians how that had happened. He said the polarity had been reversed on the output after the high voltage, vacuum tube(valve) power supply had been shut down.
    To this day I wonder how high those cans might have gone had it occurred in an open field like you used.

    I think a contra-rotating prop setup would be amazing for a project like this. Get rid of most of that torque twist.
    Still a super fun project though. Definitely going to have to make one eventually

    As a Dutch viewer, I have to say I like your Red - White - Blue colors, especially because you added an orange parachute.
    That said, I do like the project even more. What a great way of using supercapacitors. I have a project going on with a printed torpedo that begs for this solution. Thanks for bringing me to this idea.

    That is one of the best projects I have seen thus far. The thought to put supercapacitors to it is an excellent idea. I think you will agree at one of the most common problems with drones and now Rockets is that it takes forever to charge so your capability of having fun is diminished greatly. Great job thanks for the video

    1:46 "okay it's a bit of a dodgy connection just holding the wires like this but"
    - Gosh, if only someone could invent a better way.

    I’d like to see the rocket unfold a pair of wings and turn into a glider at the apex for a smoooooth landing.

    • @crying_hippy
      @crying_hippy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Can be done with a gravity assisted system, a large ball bearing that when rolled and rocket is pointed down, it release two wings held in place at bottom of rocket by ball bearing and when it moves forward slides past the sprig trigger holding wings in
      Meh
      Yo get the idea
      I just got to 9 mins in on video, so replace ball bearing and spring mech with gyro switch that releases folded wings to glide but then you got to design a glider type body with lift and aerodynamics or its just a stick with wings
      Peace and Blessings

    I'm impressed! Looked like a heavy build, but still took off like a, eh, rocket.
    Unlike batteries, capacitors take on whatever voltage is applied to them (or explode), and loads of energy (especially these super caps), so can be lethal. Viewers should be warned!

    When i was a kid, i used some capacitors with small broken bulb to ignite powder in petard. That was mounted on rocket models, and i started them horizontal into walls. That was quite fun. Like a rockets on military planes/heli. They ditonated when smashed into the walls
