    You have no idea how helpful this has been. Coming from someone who only today ruined his entire mix by re amping and in turn starting the endless loop of changing things. Re amp guitar, suddenly bass isn’t hitting right, change the bass now the synths don’t work. Its a never ending rabbit hole. I learn’t the hard way. This is such a simple solution and so obvious now I’ve heard it. Very grateful

    I like the advice "so you will stop tweaking the settings in production". I do that all the time, and it makes mixing take longer and you get ear fatigue. It often leads to resetting all the faders and starting over. But if you have the audio committed, you free yourself to just work with that. Another benefit of committing amp sims is for songs you may open up in 5, 10 or 20 years and realize the plugins are missing. I have Logic files going back to 1997 and this has happened. If I had the audio and still wanted to work with it (say, an unfinished song) I could try to use a new sim or recreate the tone.

    I was forced to do this due to an unpowered laptop. Once you get around 10 plugins on an Edit, it starts breaking up during playback, so I just started setting the output as an input on a different track, and recording it as audio. There probably is a simple way to do that in Waveform, but I just use it like an analogue studio really, if it works, it works! I do the same with midi drums, record each drum as audio, and then treat them as if I'd recorded them myself.
    It definitely helps get through the mixing process. I then record my submixes as stereo audio tracks, and just keep bumping tracks down until I have one stereo drum track, one stereo music track, a stereo backing vocal track, and a stereo lead vocal track.
    You still have the raw audio, I don't leave them in my Edit, if I want them, they'll be in the project folder, but it's great to finalise each step as you go. You really feel like you're getting somewhere when the number of tracks reduce each session.

    As a noob this actually makes total sense to me. I sent a friend my project which were all raw and he had issues with midi and GTR tones. I assumed he did not have the same plugins ins as me even though they were LP stock it got me thinking to bounce first removes these potential issues. What I do wonder is this...How should I adjust the volume of the tracks before bouncing? I noticed when I leave them in the mixed vol they sound quieter. Another question is does the master VCA plugins also get stamped (exciter, Master AI etc.) ? Should I turn all these off? I will go back and turn off the EQ like you suggest and run some tests myself but wanted to ask the question here in case someone had some advice....Thanks!

    Mainly for point one. I do have very powerful pc, but maybe that'll make a difference.
    Point two isn't really a problem for me and my band. We just make the tones we like, then we leave them alone for the most part.

Neural DSP typically is at 1% in stereo. My whole stereo rhythm guitar bus with IRs and other fx typically is at 2% peak.
    I've had sessions with lots of Kontakt samples but I've never ran into CPU load problems but I've had issues with RAM size.

    Dammit. I don't commit them, I leave them 'live'. Mind you, I don't generally mess about once I've decided on a good tone (too lazy)! But I also get the sense that leaving everything 'live' can introduce constant fluctuations in the sound, making it harder to mix. I will start committing to track from now on. Everything is clear, but I don't understand one thing: When you commit the tones, the faders are set halfway to reach the level I see at around -18. So you commit your tones at that level, but you have the same fader position in the rendered tracks as well. I have Studio One. when I render the tracks they maintain the level I had decided, -18 -12, but the faders of the new audio tracks are in unit position. I have tracks at -18 -12 but the faders at zero units. So should I export the tracks to zero unity? and re-adjust the levels in the exported tracks? I don't understand this and it's very important.

    @shaihulud4515 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, this is a great video, but maybe I have some food for thought on this topic.
    Indeed, I usually go with my plugins into the mixing phase, without rendering the files beforehand. Now, I used to do this initialy, but about four years ago, I changed this habbit, here is why:
    Back then, we already had great Amp sims, but it was kinda habit for me to render and treat the tracks like "real" guitar tracks. Than I learned to make use of the benefits the top tier Amps sims offer these days: you can tweak your tone where there's the most impact - by changing the cabs via IRs or some other means. Especially for metal tones this is these days my way to go. Now, back then, I would go for a tone I really like, and afterwards make corrections (if needed) with my EQ. Now, it may seem absurd at first, especially given that nothing has as much impact on tone as the cab, but for me it worked better, to make changes to my IR (or whatever the Amp sim has to offer), before I would reach over to an EQ. Sometimes I go through three or four different settings, just to end up with one that sits a lot better in my mix - no need to bother an EQ! It might - however - be greatly influenced by how I build up my mixes: I usually start with drums, then bass, then guitars. If I get the low frequencies right, I feel more comfortable to embed the mid and highs with other techniques. Just my two cents.

  • @fromdepthswerise3024

    Question, out of curiosity: do you record the individual tracks in mono then bounce to one stereo track? Example: I quad track my guitars (two left 100 percent and two right 100 percent), should those be in mono?

    • @greghillmusic
      @greghillmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you're recording DI using one cable, it's mono. If you're recording an amp using 1 microphone, it's mono. You stack the quad tracks into a sub mix or mix bus or whatever you wanna call it, you bus them together and that channel is stereo.

      @fromdepthswerise3024 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In reaper, after i get the guitars recorded the way i want i just render the tracks to new tracks inside the project and disengage the plugins in the old tracks before muting them and putting them in the backend of the mixer and hide them in a subgroup. So i dont see them... but then if i want to change them i can just reengage the plugins, fix what i want and rerender them to new tracks again and the DIs are always still there. :D
    Its effectively the same as freezing but its not actually a freeze and is more flexible.

  • @alrecks619
    @alrecks619 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    the first step is really useful when you have low end rig or something like that, because you can keep on mixing without being too concerned about CPU usage. And ofc not to mention the "MAKE UP YOUR MIND!" mindset.
    edit : speaking of the main reason why Amp Sims nowadays tend to use so much CPU, it's mainly to get more of that analog kind of top end without the so called "digital fizz" which is known as aliasing, by using Oversampling (think of it as "Anti-Aliasing" in your game's graphics settings). Ofc in addition with heavier CPU usage, oversampling can also introduce latencies which can be undesirable if you are tracking. Some amp sims will let you adjust how much oversampling you want, but some will lock out at certain levels of oversampling (looking at you, IK Multimedia!).

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found that fizz usually comes from badly captured IR's. I've heard a lot of fizzy tones coming from the newer fancy pants amp sims...I honestly don't get what all of the hype is about with newer amp sims...I think a lot of it is just marketing and pretty-looking GUI's. 😂

    Another great video! I normally do print my guitar tracks but I've been committing to the EQ as well so I'm gonna try and switch that up and EQ the printed tracks.
    What about leads that have delay? Would you add the delay to the printed track and just have the lead itself be printed of just the amp sim?
    Keep up the awesome work!

      If the delay is part of the tone (as a pedal) I'd print it with the amp sim. If it's just for widening or thickening the tone, I'd add it after printing

    Hello, Bobby. I have a question, mate. I have a guitar processor Boss ME-50. I love it and I wanna use it in my production. So my question is this: Is there a way to record a Di track and then add the Boss Me-50 tone to it? Cuse when I record directly with the processor, you know the deal, I end up having only the wet track, no Di, and I can't edit it. I hope you can guide me :) All the best, mate!

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! You're gonna need a DI box to split your signal into two: 1) clean DI 2) Boss ME-50's output. You'll then record both tracks at once.

    • @butcher_0392
      @butcher_0392 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The DI box nowadays is throwing away 200 dollars without any sense.
      * The reason that it is always recommended in the forums to record DIs is because 10 years ago the interfaces did not have a hiZ dedicated instrument input that was optimal for receiving signals from electric guitars or basses, so there was the famous clip without the possibility Tracking at -6dbfs peak a quality DI signal.
      The first generation of scarlett had max input gain of +3dbu the current 3rd Gen has +12.5dbu therefore we have 4 times more headroom so now we can record excellent quality guitar DIs using only the interface without the need for External DI Boxes.
      Also the new interfaces have much quieter preamps, excellent dynamic range, good converters, efficient drivers for perfect latency, where we can monitor directly from the Daw without a problem, and a scarlett only costs just 120 bucks it's a gift you don't need more .

    It's interesting advice for sure. But I'll never commit my di to anything. I like the versatility of amp sims, it's like the main selling point for me. As for freeing up CPU, this has just never been a problem for me. I run 2 amp sims, Libra, 2 instances of Kontact, along with the rest of my mix and my cpu never leaves the 45% ish range.

    Hey Bob. I like this workflow and try to practice it regularly in a slightly different way. I am a Studio One user and I am wondering if you or anyone else reading this knows how to commit up to a certain insert as you demonstrated in Pro Tools. I would typically use Transform in S1 which is really just a freeze. Same idea and nice because you can unfreeze at will, but not quite the same as committing. Any thoughts on S1? Anybody??

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I know you can definitely commit plugins in most DAW's, but not sure if you can do it up to a certain point like I'm demonstrating in Pro Tools. An easy fix would be to bypass all of your other plugins, commit the track and then copy them over to the printed version.

    • @gregnott7157
      @gregnott7157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice answer. That's exactly what I have to do in Studio One. I found a feature request for the exact workflow ProTools offers. If I do and EQ moves before committing, I save the settings as a user preset and boom... The nice thing about S1 commit (they call it transform) is that it is reversible!! ProTools as well? Awesome tips and as always appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us!!
    Question for you regarding DI guitar and amp sims. I find that I have a lot of “idle hiss” with my amp sims even with the guitar volume all the way down but plugged into my audio interface. If I use a real tube amp into my interface with the same IR I can get higher gain and better sounding distortion without the same amount of idle hiss.
    I’m assuming what I’m hearing is the audio converts being magnified in the DI signal because of the gain of the distortion. Is there a way to minimize this to get a better tone and less of the hiss? For reference I shoot to peak at -6dbfs and my audio interface is a focusrite scarlett 18i8 2nd gen.

    • @butcher_0392
      @butcher_0392 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your tracking guitar DIs at -6dbfs peak in the Daw and you still have less distortion than your real amp, you can use a Maxon OD808 as a clean boost with gain at zero and volume at max tone to taste.
      Or you can also Tracking a - 3dbfs peak and thus you will have more distortion in your amp sim.
      * As for using the same IR it will not sound exactly like your real amp, because the sim will have a different response to playing and curve, you can use an analyzer to see the differences between your two tones, like the fabfilter pro q3 or similar, and there you will see the frequencies that you have to increase or remove from your tone, so that it does not have that fizz and sounds similar to what you want.
