- Interview with the Creator of The Crow: James O'Barr
Today we speak to creator of The Crow, James O'Barr. We talk about what inspires him, his work, his interests, and even talk about Batman! Thank you to Hodgepodgetastic for inviting us to meet James O'Barr!
#thecrow
I met James on several occasions between 2006 and 2014 - he was quiet but always appreciative. He did two custom sketches for me, which I still love and would easily frame if I had space for them. I remember on one of my last trips to see him, I left the show around the same time as he did. My Mom picked me up, and I excitedly pointed him out. He seemed very touched by that, mimicking my speech and mannerisms. I'll never forget that.
I got to spend time with him as well. He is a lot of fun to drink with. And I got to watch him paint, Great guy.
Oh wow that’s amazing
I met James when I was 12 at the red lion in I grew up in a extremely abusive home and always saw the crow as an outlet to grow my pain into art in which turned into a vast career for me now. I remember my shitty mother just leaving me at the comic convention alone and I waited in line so when I got up to meet him . He said you read this? And I was shy so simply said yes . Then he said and you understood it?. I again said yes he looked at me and said wow sorry kid as to say I’m sorry for the shit you are dealing with he signed my booked and wrote a touching little message in the cover of the making of the crow movie . Thanks for being such an inspiration and doing something positive with your pain James
Oh wow. I’m sorry to hear about the situation but it sounds he left a lasting positive memory for you
Nearly 30 years ago I was the artist hired to draw "The Crow: Demon in Disguise" before Kitchen Sink went under. After all these years, I've still never had a chance to shake O'barr's hand. Hopefully, I'll have that chance.
I hope you do
Oh wow! I hope you do!
@@TheLegacyofNerd Side note: the new movie was/is a disaster.
What James O'Barr said is spot on. Well, at least for me, anyway. As a teenager during the '90s, I tried REALLY hard getting into comic books, especially comics about superheroes.
They NEVER resonated with me. I think it's mostly because I like watching and reading about more realistic characters and writing.
Being someone, who was born and raised in the early '80s when Slasher Horror was at its pinnacle, I believe that people like myself were more interested Realistic Fiction.
Honestly, I always felt that writing and/or watching a movie about serial killers is more frightening because serial killers really DO exist. The same applies for stalkers.
Different people like different things. Because of that we got The Crow!
@@TheLegacyofNerd you mean The Crow remake? Yeah, especially if they're fan fiction writers.
I met James once..smh..hes a brilliant artist, he inspired me when i was younger like 16 im 47 now, he inspired me to drawand paint. I finally met him in 1999. Hes very deep and intelligent 👍🏻💯 really great man. His art in person looks amazing. Im not going to see the new Crow, ive read and watch the bad reviews on it. I knew it waa a bad film from the 2hr trailer i saw😅 Good video mate. Cheers
Yes he’s great! I’m glad he inspired you!
Great interview as always buddy
Thanks man!
I really wanted to know what goes on in Mr. O'Barr's head regarding all this that revolves around The Crow, something so personal that arose from such a deep trauma and such a delicate moment in his life, and now he is constantly reminded of it through his best-known work, I wonder if he regrets it in some way or if it is a healthy way of dealing with all these events.
I didn’t get that feeling at all. I think he sees it more now as something that’s part of him. He’s probably one of the most humble, modest, legends I’ve ever met. Dude still operates on a flip phone
I don't know if this is true or not, but I read that after Brandon died while filming the original movie, it was like James' experienced that same loss all over again and he wished he had never written the book. So, I guess at one point he did regret it. Again, assuming that's actually true.
@@SlasherIncorporated Those were his words to Eliza Hutton (Brandon's fiancé)
I was there in SA to meet him. He was cool. Unfortunately mentally I froze before I could ask him my question.
I almost did too! He is super nice though!
Great interview bro keep doing what you doing
Thank you!
I’m meeting him in September and I have no clue how I’m gonna react
I was super nervous myself but he’s really soft spoken
Musical? Watch the film “Streets Of Fire.” It’s not a musical but it’s a musical. Opening credits actually call it a rock n roll fantasy or something. Watch it and you’ll be convinced it was a major influence on the 94 film. Hence in a funny way the studio got its musical.
PS the director, Alex Proyas, is literally filming a musical right now called “R.U.R.”
Interesting!
Nice interview! Crow 2024 was awful btw
Thank you! I haven’t seen it yet. Before we started recording he didn’t seem to enthused to talk about it lol
@@TheLegacyofNerd Yeah that was probably for the best. I just saw the actress that played Sarah is throwing shade at it on her insta lmao
@@TheMarc388oh wow. I’ll be honest, I’ll probably still see it but maybe on discount night or on streaming lol
