Hello, amazing work! and also thank you for the detailed how-to, including the blender part! I visited the above link but couldn't see the final shots of the egg, I mean, those shots in the video from 36:24 and forwards look amazing and I was wondering if you could add a few of those somewhere please
Hi again, I found a way to remove the lower play bar with javascript, changed the res to 1080 on the vid and took some screens with irfanview, again, thank you very much for the video and the tutorial!
Hmm glue the egg together but leave the quarters unglued near the top. Bend them back the other way then add in texture, paint and you would have a face hugger egg from Alien.
Like shingling a roof
Alien egg opened!
*Bill* : I don't use pins to hold down my patterns because the holes will come back to haunt you.
*also Bill* : I poke a wire straight through my prop to hold it for sealing.
Holes - you can't live with them, you can't live without them.
yeah, I was also like "oh ok . . . wait, what?"
I think because once the prop is constructed you can put the hole in a spot thats easily hidden?
Loved the spider man cosplay box :D
D:
I saw that
So using that for my next con...
mister stark i don't feel so good
Paul Kaminski, IKR? It looks so realistic!
Your definition of "made easy" is very different from my definition...
Storm Tater 😂 I guess I’ll be buying mine from a store if I want one.
th-cam.com/video/ZXsQAXx_ao0/w-d-xo.html
J'allais dire sa :(
Come on, all you need is two software programs, a printer, printer paper, a box cutter, two types of foam, an exacto knife, two different kinds of tape, a cutting pad, contact cement, a heat gun, foam anvil, dremel with two different heads, super glue, caulk, thick wire, primer, airbrush paints, pearl pigment, airbrush medium, an airbrush gun, acrylic paints, paint brushes, and a hair dryer 🤣
I made 3 of the eggs out of polymerclay and it was definitely more easy than his process. It's on my Instagram: the_azure_bee
If anyone wants to see it.
Missed an opportunity to title the video Game of foams
^ This
Check out our social media posts today ;)
It is...
Crafty Seagull
It is now he edited it
Did they though? Did they really? Read the title again
That pattern would really work good for the golden egg from Harry Potter.
Awesome video as always guys, I want to share a tip about scales, if you want to make a lot, use a guitar pick punch, this thing can make a guitar pick from a credit card so it got enought to make 2mm foam scales ;) hope it helps!
The talent level of the creator on this channel is just jawdropping
Awww thanks so much! We have LOTS of practice
The pattern would also work for the egg from Harry Potter 4!
YES! I was going to suggest just that, the reward for the first task on the triwizard cup
itrynottolie which is also a dragon egg so naturally. Just paint it gold. Harry Potter isn’t really trending though like Game of Thrones is atm so they are making content that keeps up with today. That helps them keep flow of many different forms of audiences plus more people shocking know more about GOT over Harry Potter these days. Not many kids watch HP anymore
Norse nomad, I know that, but he did specifically ask what else this pattern would work for
itrynottolie besides another dragon egg? Or anything that is an egg in general.
Norse nomad he just asked for other props it would work for, that’s what came to mind
Considering that this video was released 6 days before Easter, I believe the Easter egg hunt in the shop at the beginning was perfect!
The Dremel sounds like an extra angry bee. 😂
What a dream-job you guy´s have, never forget that, even though it´s obviously hard and time-consuming!
It certainly is a lot of work, but MAN is it worth it!
So think of ideas of what can be used for an egg shaped template. The orb on the top of a wizard's staff, a crystal ball, and if you shape it correctly then maybe a carnivorous plant.
EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!! And I have a few ideas for you, and some just pointers for viewers as I'm sure you already knew, but just got too excited.
1) Instead of weighing down your template use temp hold spray glue on the template. (think sticky note glue) stays in place without any fuss, but lifts off easy.. I've used scotch double sided tape since I didn't have any spray handy, and it worked ok too. It is quite a bit more sticky than sticky notes, but it was OK. Just lightly press it to the foam.
2) As you noticed you ran out of time during gluing. For the viewers, remember to not get too excited and glue only a few pieces at a time. The thinner your contact cement, the faster it will be ready. In the case of this egg, glue only one half at a time at most.
3a) Instead of applying glue to both edges of both halves, just do one edge on each half. Stick it together, and then glue the remaining seam. Since the egg is squishy, you could just squish the top towards the bottom for a minute to hold the seams apart while the glue dried.
3b) If dead set on gluing everything at once for the final gluing, use parchment paper to keep the glued halves apart. The glue will cling, but not adhere to it. Much like the paper on adhesive strips you pull off right before using the tape.
Side note) I tried Weldwood because it's cheap, and easy to find locally. As suggested by Svetlana, I put it in a squeeze bottle and spread it thin with a scrap piece of foam. IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL!!!!!! (When I say thin I basically made it look wet and that was enough. You don't want it to pool anywhere.) It was ready to piece together in under a minute. The parts I've joined with it will NOT come apart. (I've tried) I've even used it to prime pieces before adding paint or kwik seal and the stuff is nearly indestructible. To mar the paint you must mar the foam.
Edit: OH!!! Maybe a heat gun instead of the torch? Is there a reason you went to torch instead?
Just to add on the tape tip, you can stick in on your shirt/pants a couple times just to make it less sticky before using it.
@@D_funct Excellent point!!! Wish I'd thought of that.
Nice tutorial. Thanks. It might be fun to make a cast and replicate in a translucent material. Add some interior lighting to really make it pop.
Hey, Sir, I just want to THANK YOU for the templates! I've already finished my very own dragon egg and I'm really happy with it! It took around 2-3 days to make it, but I'm really surprised to see how well I can make one WITHOUT the rotary tool or 6mm HD Foam (I used 2mm)! I'm really happy to see easy builds from your channel, and I hope i can do more! Thank you again, Sir! Have a wonderful day!
Hey that's really fantastic! Thanks so much for watching our content and supporting what we do!
I freaked out when I saw you pull out a Maker Knife! I'm a big fan of yours Bill. I hope you like the knife as much as I and Giaco did when we designed it :) Hope to shake your hand someday. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much David! I love what you guys have been up to and the Maker Knife is really great! =D
Thanks!
The pattern would also work as a shoulder guard!
Excellent idea!
Just thinking that
I've been using ceramic kitchen knives and carrying a ceramic folder for a few years now. JUST ordered utility blades. THANK YOU!
You're very welcome!
That one Harry Potter egg would be good for this template
Love the Ring Wraith gauntlet holding it. Works so well.
Right?
"Just add a little bit of titanium white."
I was right in the middle of typing a comment asking “Bill! Is that a ceramic blade!?” When you said you were testing out a ceramic blade HA!
I swear every other video I watch of yours, all I can think to myself is;
“Where does he get those wonderful toys...”
You and Brittany should have a go at making a caricature puppet of each other, you could even dress them in miniature versions of you favourite cos play outfits :D
This would make some fantastic glaives or armor! Even a big shield!!! Great work and tutoring
Ego's ship from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is kinda egg shaped! I suppose everything is though if you just make small enough eggs and add a bunch together.
Ego was misread as Eggo and I was like, wait.
I made my eggs out of polymerclay, but I definitely like your method; it turned out pretty awesome.
you can also use the egg template not just for GoT but also for HTTYD eggs and The Harry Potter Golden Egg
you can use this pattern for shoulder pauldrons, oversize knee guards, or hand guard for foam rapiers. keep up the great work.
Oh a rapier guard! That's a neat idea!
Love your work Bill! Keep up the Brilliance! Side note: a bit of Vaseline on the rim of the can of barge when you first open it will work wonders on keeping it glue free.
Ohio River Valley Cosplayers that's fecking genius...
I like watching Bill fuck something up, and telling you that it's gonna be ok. That it can and will be fixed. That it's okay to mess up, or for things to not work out perfectly because we're going to keep working on it until we're happy and that's the most important thing. Thanks Bill. I bought the books during Christmas and haven't been feeling like I could make anything... but I can. And I'll fuck it up and that's okay. Well fucking done Punished Props.
what about using a Guitar Pick Template for the Scales
I think that will be very expensive.
@@jochenwuerfel You would only use them as a template. You're not scaling the dragon egg with picks.
That's a great option for sure!
They also make guitar pick cutters so you can cut picks out of anything plastic.
@@jochenwuerfel you can get a massive number of thin cheap picks online, but the op specifically said template.
Wow !! I absolutely love this project, thank you for sharing your talent with beginners like myself.
Would the end cap be called a foam over?
That is one of the most useful blender tutorial. Thanks a lot
This would be PERFECT for my Pokemon Breeder cosplay! I carry an egg in a baby carrier!
Thanks for the plans Bill, will be transfering to stiffcard asap as 'nerfball' shape and parts thereof will always be useful. Also thinking that resizing the template may find more uses... goblets for one, and on a larger scale the Xeno-egg!
This pattern can also be just maybe for the golden egg from Harry potter.
I've seen a lot of "how to make a GoT Dragon Egg" videos, and yours is the best I've seen. I may actually try and tackle this one.
Go for it!
My first time on ur channel. The Craftman mentioned you guys so I had to check you out!🙋🏽♀️
Game of Foams should be the name of a cosplay contest
Pokemon or Digimon Egg :D This would also be a good shape for a Muppet Head
Awesome. I think you just gave me the perfect Christmas gifts for the GOT fans in my family.
Wonderful!
Hi Like that you use Blender, blender got "Paper Cut Addon" build inside, could make foam smithing easyer
You could use the pattern for flowers maybe. If you bent the edges the opposite direction and left it open, using smaller versions and more form pads of the same pattern for internal flowers, building it inside out with smallest foam petals on the inside and building larger and larger out.
Egg shaped things you could use this pattern for? How about a miniature prop of Ego's ship from GOTG vol 2? or a facehugger ovopod?
I paused at 9:26 and seeing that slight separation facing bill made me immediately think of a facehugger ovopod.
I love how you guys always go all out when making props, if I did this it would go like this: Buy a big Easter egg at the store. Cut out a ton of triangles. Glue them on. Spray paint. Boom! Done
That's also a great option!
You could possibly make a small Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors with that template!
I gotta try that
If you use floor mat foam it basically turns in to Audrey on its own. Plus the thicker foam gives support at the base.
I like how Bill comes in then shoves everyone out of the way
I won!
There is a plugin for Blender which allows you to export models as Paper models
In this case, it would work, but as far as i knwo, you can't really edit the result that easily. For simple things like this it would be ok, but for more complicated things I'd use pepakura.
It exports as a DXF file if I’m not mistaken, which is supported by Illustrator
@@EndreHorpestad SVG or PDF to be precise :) just playing with it now...
@@EndreHorpestad that is correct, and for just seperating edges that's no problem, but if you have to join and disconnect a lot of faces on a complicated model, i think it gets a little difficult to keep track of the faces and edges. If you can do it with blender and illustrator, thats great, but I just use pepakura, although I thought about doing it that way before buying it.
you could just unwrap the model in blender and do it that way though you would likely have to modify it to make it foldable
A few of those would make a great shoulder guard. Not the whole egg, but like the foam strips
either other dragon/mythical eggs or the golden egg that gave the clues in the Tri Wizard Tournament in Harry Potter.
You got some props from my favorite games and movie just from this cutscene awesome I can always count on my favorite diy prop channel
Aww we're so glad you have a good time!
TNT cosplay just released dragon scale strips of foam, they’d work perfectly.
They what?? *hurries to the site* Ooooh. I needs!
link please
That’s some precise foam cutting right there....you guys make it look so easy....inspiring....yet very daunting......AMERICA FOOTBALL!
Need to make an EVA Alien Egg for Alien Day on 4/26
I only started watching the series 4 days ago, but now I see...
*_It's everywhere._*
GOT is like TV's equivalent of TES V: Skyrim
They've even got a similar aesthetic. Almost makes me think people are obsessed with dragons, magic and murder.
A little vaseline on your Barge lid will keep it from sticking.
I wonder how well that ceramic knife holds up! I've heard good things about a ceramic cutter staying sharp for a long time without the need for sharpening, which would be a definite bonus for me as someone who hates sharpening!
The sound the Dremel makes is oddly amusing to me xD
Punished Props Academy
I enjoyed this video of you, thank you for sharing
ALIEN eggs of course!!!!!! :D
Good idea 💡👍🏻
I made a bunch of these using the giant eggs from a craft store and hand cut out leather scales. It was awesome
How cool!
YEAH You used your foam advil!
Advil...
I love my painkillers!
This is just superb, I have been researching "what can i use instead of mold release?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Peyaniel Psychological Predominance - (search on google ) ? It is a great exclusive guide for discovering the trick to be a candle maker for profit without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate got amazing success with it.
You could use the egg pattern to make pauldrons, the judge mas from far cry, the golden dragon egg from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, plus a lot more eggs from different cartoons, films, anime, anime films, movies TV shows, and TV movies come to mind
Eggcellent. The egg from harry potter. Golden trial egg.
I wandered over here while reading Adam Savage's book, and am very pleasantly pleased at what I've found. Of course I hit subscribe, and I look forward to exploring the channel and your website in depth. Thanks!
Awe, thank you! Adam's book is so great.
I think someone should gift you an obsidian blade. just imagine cutting with a 0.6 mil blade...
And to defend yourself from White Walkers as well...
I love watching bill do his thing lol you guys are definitely in my top 5 favorite channels .
Awwww thanks so much!
Why go through that whole print, tape over tape, backlight, trace and scan. If you were going to trace it in inkscape anyway ???
That shape would work perfectly for generic pauldrons which could be added onto in order to make them non-generic, also face masks.
The pattern would work for a football 🤷🏽♂️
I may or may not have used it for that exact purpose at least 3 times...
Or, to stay in the fantasy realm : a Blood Bowl ball !
Punished Props Academy nice 👍🏽
That opening was Eggcelent!
Use that shape for Stewie's head (Family Guy)
This is the best comment I have seen today
When I saw that you were doing Dragon eggs my brain went to How to Train Your Dragon and if you look at the game Rise of Berk you will find a ton more Dragon Eggs. This project is prefect for a beginner.
Ahh yes! We're so glad you enjoyed the video!
That seems like a lot of steps just to make an almond on printer paper.
Another thing that reminded me after you finish gluing it what it looks like a rugby ball
so all the 3d editing just to make a 2d template lmao wait of time
Kind of agree. I'd rather just use Illustrator and trial/error (also since I know 0 about 3D editing software)
cool proyect, love seeing you enjoy yourself in the workshop :)
Bill you magnificent son of a foam-smith!!! Wonderful project. I’ve been dying to set the MDF aside and try foam and this would be perfect!
Fantastic! Can't wait to see how it turns out!
That pattern would also be good for making something like a man eating plant bud like from the movie Little shop of horrors or maybe even use just half for a skull cap for a helm.
The eggs falling on the ground sounded like applause!
Now that's a cool painted
artichoke 😎 This vid gave me an idea for building 1 for my buddy. He loves dragons...
Hah! Fantastic!
A good prop would be the Geonosian Beam Rifle from Republic Commando, fairly sure that has an egg shape in it, or at least a half egg shape
I sure would love a dragon egg. Big GOT fan!
That would also make a great template for a Venus Fly-trap puppet!
Finally a foam build!!!
Awesome video as always. I literally was working on editing video on my own version of this when I saw that you had made it too. I took a little different of an approach but am always inspired by your builds. My build will be out tomorrow. I am very tempted to make my own Proton pack after your last build. i already scratch built a trap. I've used an egg shape as a tummy for a Porg and a Gizmo builds. Thanks for doing what you do. It inspires the little channels like me.
That's so wonderful! I can't wait to see your version - please share it with me on Twitter: twitter.com/chinbeard
For some reason I wish you would decorate your respirator make it look really cool
I just found y’all! Love your stuff. You asked what other things this form could be. How about Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors? That seems perfect for the “head” part. Just a thought...
Thanks so much for watching! We're stoked to have you :) Great suggestion!
Great project! Looks so good.
You can also UV unwrap the object directly in blender and export it as as .PNG file with 2 clicks. Then open it with MS Paint to print. In my opinion it is one of the best software for printing especially large objects, because it allows you to adjust the layout over multiple pages!
2:46 if you don't want to buy a program then there is an add-on for blender that does the same thing (but I don't know how it compares)
it's called Export Paper Model and you can find it if you go to Preferences > Add-ons and type in 'paper'
Thanks for sharing this awesome tip!
the egg shape could also be used as the 'ornement' on top of a soercerer / spellslinger staff :D
Ooo you can make so many different staff toppers with an egg base!
Absolutely!
I am a long time viewer and a advnced blender user, I am so happy you finally use blender! If you use the uv unwrap tool, you don't need pep...
Foam balloons, balls, oversized anime/manga “bells”, etc.
Never seen Games of Throne (can’t be bothered and it just doesn’t catch my attention) but I do like how you did your dragon egg and that you let us learn from your mistakes.
Lol you annihilated that poor blue egg! What did it ever do to you!?!?! 😂
And when I saw the “cosplay” from avengers infinity, took me a second or two. Brutal 😂
Thanks for the pattern bill. Im gunna try using it to make a mini nuke
Make sure to put 76 on the front of your door as well...
Hey, Blender user here. I guess this would count as 'intermediate' difficulty, but you can do a 'UV Unwrap' of the object, to get the same kind of template. You can even use a command called 'mark seam' to tell blender where to cut.
