You brought back a great memory. In 1975 my father was a foreman in a city cemetery. They were removing thatch from some lawns and dumping the thatch in the cemetery dump. One of his workers, a Portuguese immigrant was indignant and holding up a handful said, “This crazy Mr Bill. This is blood to the soil.” Every year after that, each spring I received truck loads of thatch that I would spread between the rows of my vegetable garden. What a great garden. I still mulch my gardens with grass clippings and shredded leaves. Excellent video.

Free mulch? Sign us up! We didn't know about Chipdrop for getting free wood chips. What a great idea. Thanks for the tip, Joe. And thanks for the reminder that autumn leaves should never be thrown away. They are just waiting to be "recycled" back into the garden.

I used to get the composted leaves and clippings from the town and it was great. One year I covered two of my forty foot by four foot beds - one asparagus and one in raspberries. The next year nothing came up in either bed. That batch must have had a lot of weed killer or pre-emergent mixed into it. After that I only used what I made myself - I usually get a couple of hundred pounds of worm castings from my worms and that helps a lot.

And thank you for an excellent explanation of my two favorite sources for mulch (leaves and wood chips). I am lucky enough to have a local arborist who will give me chips and I have woods on two sides of my property that yield oceanic amounts of leaves. Grass clippings I prefer to leave on the lawn as fertilizer and I cut it high (3') so clippings are never a problem. The lawn always looks lush and green so if it's happy, so am I. Again, if I may impose, I am very eager to know about your

I have a question about grass clippings. My yard has weeds with the grass , so if I take the clippings and add the clippings to my garden fresh won’t those seeds grow in my garden
