R40s
The R32 because it retired about 2 weeks ago. It'd be nice to see how it evolved over the years.

Fun fact, as a kid, I used to be scared of the Slanted design of the R40S units.
And the R32's, they are some of my favorite B Div Rolling Stock. I'm glad I was able to ride those trains during their multiple years in service.
It's so nice to be able to watch your videos and be able to learn a few things about the subway. I'd love to see the R32s next because they retired about two weeks ago and it'd be nice to see how they evolved from the first day of service to retiring from the subway.
I'm glad you enjoy my videos, and enjoy learning all of the cool facts about the Subway System. In the future, I'll definitely be doing a video on the R32 units.
From a T/O's perspective, IMHO, the Bombardier R142 are superior to the R142A/R188 versions. They are faster, have better brakes, ride better, and are more comfortable for the crew.
Really? I would've never expected a Bombardier unit to have better performance than a Kawasaki.
@@MysticTransit The R142A/R188 cars have a tendency to roll back when leaving a station, especially on a grade. They also buck at times, which doesn't happen with the R142. The AdTrans propulsion on that fleet is to blame. That's why the R160s used Alstom (same as the R142) and Siemens propulsion systems.
I have to agree with you there. I live by the seven line and yeah sometimes that train feels like it the rails when it leaves the station
@@MysticTransit Ride the late night (4) and you'll see why. When I used to have to commute on the (4), I would hope I get a R142 as opposed to a R142A. The acceleration and take off is faster with a 142 than a 142A. The comparison holds true for the R143's and R160's on the (L).

The r142/a and the 188 are my favorite those engine sounds are lullabies. Kawasaki are my favorite train company especially what they do for Japan and the us with similar engines also
Yeah, I love the Traction Motor sounds from them as well. Some of the best in the system. IMO, the only thing that comes close to it are the R160 Siemens units.
From a Train Operator point of view the R142 is superior in speed and comfort over the R142A. They accelerate faster with no roll back and there is no bucking in the acceleration or braking. The R142S are also quieter and the seats are more comfortable for the operators. The only advantage from operating point of view is that R142A have slightly better cab during cold weather.
It’s sad how underrated this channel is compared to the effort he puts into his videos, get this man the views he deserves!
I personally love the R142A. The R142A on the (6) we're like Redbirds to me. I grew up riding them all the time. I wish these can come back to the (6) as like you said, it is the best line to see them in.
I grew up riding the R142A's on the (6) as well. (Which is why I added in the Best Line part) I really miss these units on the (6) Line, but it's understandable why they needed to go. I only hope they get shifted back to the (6) when the R262's enter service.
@@MysticTransit The R142as will be back on the Pelham 6 line when the brand new R262/as comes for CBTCs to replace all the R62/R62AS on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTS. For now we all have to deal with the R62as back on the Pelham line and the same goes for the 1/3/S lines. I really truly miss the R142as on the Pelham 6 line because it held it down. Nothing cannot replace the R142as or take over the R 142as on the Pelham line anymore I'm keeping 100% real.

I work as Train Operator for almost 8 years and I found the R142/142A series to be the most ergonomically trains to operate. The operators cauld used either the right or left hand unlike the stupid R143, R160, R179 and R211 and also the corrupted R188 converts which can only be operated with the right hand.
That being said I have always found the R142s to be much smoother than the R142A, they each have different advantages and disadvantages but I believe they are still the best of all the newer NTT models even after 20 years.
Great Video! The R142A/R188 is Probably My Favorite NTT, or NYC Subway Train in General.

These are also my favorite trains in the system and when it comes to R142A family these are numbered 7211-7936 because the R188 is part of that. Remember only the 7 train gets a mixed R142A 7211-7590 with R188 7811-7898 mixed running. Another way to differentiate R142 from R142A & R188 is the air conditioning unit if it's loud you got R142 but a silent one R142A & R188.

Wow, time has really flown. Hard to believe these subway cars are now 23 years old. I remember when these subway cars were being tested on the center track on my home subway, # 5 Dyre Ave line. It will be interesting to know what line will be used for the R262 testing when they enter the system in a few years now that the Dyre Ave line center track is now used for reroutes during delays or planned construction.
The R262 will use the same test track. That's the official IRT one.

Awesome video! The R142s were the first trains I rode on the first time I visited NYC.
Also, Bombardier is pronounced "Bom-bar-dee-ay" since it's French Canadian.

I love the R142As/ R188s, I remember when I was a kid around 2002 when I took the 6 train for the first time and rode the R142A, I’d always called it “the train that talks” lol. It did take me some time to warm up to the R142s but I definitely love them a lot more now. Can u do a video on the R160s, those are number one favorite NTTs in the system
I might do one for the R160's in the future, however, it isn't a very old train, so there isn't much history behind it./

I remember spotting the first R142s on line 2, in Spring 2001 and in Fall 2011 after 9-11. How cool was it.

It took them 5 years to enter service. Cuz like they were delivered to NYC in 1999 and by 2000 they entered service and the last ones entered service by June 2005. Although I heard that their was little issues with the delivery
Fun Fact: The R110A and R110B cars were a prototype train car for both the A B and C Division of the Subway. The R110A was constructed for the A division by Kawaski Heavy Industries in 1992 as a "New Train Technologies to test various types of technologies." The R110B cars were built and ordered by Bombardier of Canada in 1989 for the exact same reasons as the R110A for the A divison.

Used to ride r142as on the 4 and 6 with my dad
7:49 R188 B and C cars, along with R142/A B cars actually have 2 motors on one truck (on the #1 end) while the other truck (on the #2 end) is a trailer. That's why the 2 trucks on B and C cars of R142/As and R188s look different

In addition to Awkawafina’s annocuements on the 7 train in January of 2020, special announcements were recorded in September 2022, the voices of Ron Darling, Keith Hernandez and Gary Kohen played on the 7 in support of the New York Mets. I actually have heard these announcements during my first weeks of college, they only stopped playing them at the beginning of October.

The reason why it’s called r142A is because of its advanced systems, if I recall correctly it has more features like not rolling back on low break power (or neutral) great video

A stands for Auxiliary since it was an addition to the original order.
Most big orders are like that, especially when multiple builders are involved.
In my opinion the R142A-R188 series are the best trains in MTA’s modern day rolling stock.

One thing you should discuss: could the MTA modify their existing NTT fleet to insert open gangways on the ends? This isn't impossible: Barcelona converted their 3000 and 4000 series meteo cars from separate units to interconnected sets, and Hamburg did the same with their BR 474 (now the BR 474 plus)

I'm seeing that there are a lot of "old timers" watching your videos, I being one . By old timers I don't mean we've been with you from the beging, I mean we're old. As one of them and not being in NYC , ( not living there, ) for many many years, I get a bit confused when you talked about the 4 train or the 7 train. I go back to tokens $.25 ones, and all letters . Ex: A, E,F,GG,D,. C would you do a video on what changed to what and when. I'd really like to get my hands on and old map and a new one. That would be helpful.

The R142 trains have similar traction motors to the Alstom Metropolis 98B which are found on the Warsaw metro.

It's interesting that the R142s and R142As are not interoperable. All 3 versions of the R160s are, but this is rarely done in revenue service.
I hope the mid-life upgrades will include replacing the strip maps with R211 style FIND displays. While they were adequate for 1999, they are way outdated by 2023 standards. They don't work during service changes when trains are rerouted, and they have to be manually replaced if anything changes at any station along the entire route, such as new bus transfers.
You forgot a R142, they are also on the (4) train, but they have different numbers. Like 1105-1115, And 1196-1206.

The (6) didn't keep them because it's easier for the IRT to have only 1 fleet on a line. Since the R142/A's are so similar to each other, they can both run on the (4), because the crews know how to work both of them.
Also, the R142A's are faster than the R62A's, and that might cause delays, with an R142A catching up to an R62A, and having to slow down.

I have mixed feelings about about the R 142As being on the 6 line because those brand new trains at that time were serving some of the most disgusting and deteriorating stations on the 6, and it took away from the 6 being a unique line because just like the 4 train, the 6 had a mixed fleet, by the same token the MTA missed their opportunity to make the Lexington Avenue line fully automatic
6347 was sadly damaged beyond repair and will probably be sold for scrap or sent to a museum. 6346, 6348, 6349 and 6350 look as though they could be repaired, though the interior would probably say otherwise.

The Pelham 6 line is definitely gonna have mix equipments R142/As R262AS just like the R211As with End ways. I have a real spriital feeling they are gonna make the R262As I'm telling you. When you get a chance read the R262 plans very carefully please.
The 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line gets all the R62AS from the 1 6 S lines when the brand new R262/As open and close ways comes I'm telling you. Thrid Avenue Elevated line is definitely picking up steam again then ever.

What I’m curious about the R142s is that has the MTA ever swapped them out like what I mean is that since they’re used on the 2 4 and 5 line and both of the 2 and 5 share the same fleet has the MTA ever places some R142s from the 2 and 5 to the 4 and does the same with placing them from the 4 to the 2 and 5 lines and vice versa.

They could of put the R62AS on the Jerome Ave 4 line so this way the 4 has half of the R62AS from the Pelham 6 line and the 4 keep there R142s while they keep the R142as on the Pelham 6 line and half of the R62AS on the Pelham 6 line.
Why couldn’t they just move all of the 4’s R142A’s to the 6 line and give the 4 line some of the 7’s R62A’s?
Fleet uniformity is the name of the game since it makes zero sense in the IRT’s case to have it’s maintain two separate fleet generations that require totally different parts.

How long do you think they will last? I expect the R-142 to retire from 2061 to 2065, while the R-142A will retire from 2068 to 2073.
70 YEARS? I doubt it. The useful life for trains ends around the 40-year mark.
@@MysticTransit I know it's unusual, but with the reliability of MTA finishing its projects on time very poor, it doesn't seem unusual for this to happen. The R-32 lasted almost 60 years, and with the great quality of the R-142 class, that doesn't seem as unusual. The R-62 could also make it to a similar age of 63 years if the MTA can't finish the R-262 project on time. If it were up to the highest standards the R-142 would already be the oldest rolling stock in their fleet, the M-7 class would be the oldest rolling stock on the Long Island Railroad & Metro North Railroad. The R-62 would have retired 5 years ago, The R-68 would have 4 years ago, the R-46 25 years ago, and the R-44 28 years ago. With all these avoidable problems going on, the proper maintenance continues to be in jeopardy.
I don’t like the LCD exterior displays on the R142A/R188s. They are defective, while the external LED route and LCD destination signs on the R142s are in great shape. Conversely, the traction motor system on the R142s sucks, compared to the R142A/R188s.

I don't think the systems on the trains can be upgraded. It's said that the R142A's run on Windows 98...
Also, I believe Subway Cars go through extensive maintenance every 7 years.

Well the r142a was better on the 6 than the 4 and fuck Mta for removing all r142a's on the 6 line, they could've kept most of them on the line 6.
When the R188 order was developed, it was decided to convert the R142As from the 6 as the R62As were not ready for retirement yet. As a result, the order was for 506 cars. 126 of them were new cars, 88 of them were new train consists. The other 38 cars were extra cars to add to the 38 conversion units (380 cars) to make 38 11-car trains. That gives a total of 506 cars or 46 11-car sets to displace the 440 R62As assigned to the Flushing line. Those have been converted to 44 10-car units that went to the 6 route and since it’s 44 trains replacing 38 R142A consists, and the service requirements call for about 36-37 trains in service for rush hours, the six extra R62A units then displaced all remaining R142As from the 6 and provide all the service for the route since it made zero sense to send those six extra consists somewhere else and to provide a bit of fleet uniformity. At that point the R142As were reassigned to the 4, which sent the R142s (in the 7000s numbering) over to the 2 and 5 to bolster service.

In my opinion I think that the (7) should get R262's with the R188's displaced to the (1) and (3) and with enough R262's to supply for the (4) and (6) routes

Red LED lights that are indicating must be reprogrammed with other matching colors of the train line routes, you’ll 4 5 6 trains of Lexington lines are GREEN and must be green 7 train Flushing line PURPLE! The RED for the 1 2 and 3 trains too!

The R62/as and the ledges R32s are holding it down real good with no rush or dents and no holes in them either. They would be stupid to scrap these good old R32s keep some on the side just in case if the R211/as brake down or the R179s. R68/as R46S . We know the A C lines are getting CBTS.
Why don't they just turn the remaining R142As into R188s and just say that the 4 train has a 10-car version of the R188?
