I LOVE your SOOTHING VOICE instead of some people who scream and talk a minute a mile when talking about depression, decluttering, organizing etc. Your voice actually LOWERS MY ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION🤗.
As soon as you said you had a PhD in Psychology, I subscribed. Finally found someone who knows what they are talking about and gives reasons why. Also, I love listening to your soothing voice. Thank you.
My family camped when I was young and I own no objects from that era other than when I smell wood smoke I immediately think of bacon, eggs, pancakes, and coffee we had for breakfast in a pine forest and that is one of my most cherished memories.
I have a blue coffee pot just like that that was my dad's. I never use it to make coffee, even though we go camping all the time... I use a French press... But I keep it as my one vase for whenever I get flowers. I decluttered all my other vases and just have this one. And it works for that! Sometimes repurposing sentimental things is a win win. Just found your channel and subscribed! Your content is very empowering!
Really love this! Most anti-hauls are people just listing off things they won’t buy anymore but it’s nice to see this as a hybrid of decluttering and reasons why you are removing a sentimental item from your home. ☺️
When I was decluttering I found some sentimental items that I knew I would never use anymore but I was happy to see them. I put these items in a storage bin which I know is taking up space but I think it is worth it. I can add to the bin and every time I look at the things inside it will be fun. I also plan to only keep it at one bin so it is only the items I truly care about that I will keep.
I’m a new subscriber and look forward to catching up on your past videos and watching your new ones. Hearing you reason why you’re going to donate these items is very helpful to me. Blessings 🌿
I am a former fashion designer , of a small business I ran for more than 20 years. I have been struggling to let go items I created, prints that I made by hand, and so. Thinking I don't need those to remember myself of WHO I AM and how I was happy by putting my artistic gifts into walking pieces people loved to wear . It is not easy, but I'm learning to let go stuff and keeping memories only. Btw I love your antique sofa 😍
I feel like, and I wanted to share this, when I sell/give away a sentimental Item (that is not the tickets, postcards, i mean more like that cofee pot or a pièce of clothing) i feel like the burden of holding on to a thing and holding onto memories of my past has fallen off of my chest. I feel lighter, fresher and happier. I still have the good memories in my mind but I no longer have the feeling that I SHOULD do somenthing again or wear somenthing again. I recommend 🥳 I mean, sometimes i feel like these items are making us more sad that the past is "in the past" than appreciate the memories.
interesting point --- some items might actually make the reminiscing more difficult or pained in some way. This really got me thinking! Thanks for sharing.
Love the concept of how object become symbols. I usually ruminate on an object way too long before donating. I did that with my wedding dress and when I pulled it out of the closet I realized it was stained (although I had it cleaned). I wasted a lot of energy on that decision.
I love you sharing your thoughts and feelings about these things- it made me laugh at myself (in a good way) because I can relate. The symbol discussion is unique and popped some mental limitations I didn’t realize I had- I love creating symbols and humans are meaning-making monkeys but there’s zero reason to encapsulate what matters in matter, in a thing. Something for me to keep thinking about. Also the space as real estate idea. I am pretty new to your channel so it’s the first time I heard it. I used to meditate in a Zen temple and the room had almost nothing in it and I always remember how it helped me calm down and be present. The value was in the quiet emptiness and absence of thought-generating sounds and stuff. This evening I am going to change up my bedroom and I want to reduce all my photos and collections and make room for my imagination and deeper awareness. Thanks for the ideas and the inspiration
Love this content. Shows we are all together with the conversations we have with ourselves on harder to declutter items. I’m pretty much down to all the hard stuff so lots and lots of these conversations with myself and sometimes multiple multiple times before I convince myself. I’ve never been very sentimental so my hard stuff is more aspirational for the life I thought I’d live or grew up thinking I should live or sunk costs stuff.....the nice barbecue grill for someone who almost never grills, the 12 place settings of entertaining dishes and nicer stainless for the single, introvert who rarely entertains and prefers smaller more casual settings or just going to a restaurant (pre-COVID) and so on.
You could always take pictures of sentimental items; in this way, the pictures can help remind you of the memory, and release you from the need to hold on to the physical item.
I always found this more painful 😅 Having the picture makes me miss the thing more. For me out of sight out of mind works best. We are all so different in what works for us 😄💕
Thank you for sharing I just got rid of 4 big iron travel trunks (don't know the right word) which we used in 1972 to move to Africa... I kept them to remember my 2 years in Congo as a 12year old ... and moved them lots of times and they were often in my way...
Fun and interesting to watch and very recognizable😀. This will help me look at sentimental/hard to let go items in a new way. A new mindset puts everything in a different perspective. Does this really make me happy or does it make me feel guilty. A lot of things make me feel guilty and they shouldn’t, so I should let them go. Thank you!
I always remember that my memories aren't i the items but in me. If I'm unsure about whether to let an item go, I'll take a picture of it and put it away for a set period of time so its as if I've decluttered it and I can think if I miss it x
You were talking about your wedding, and those candle holders. I can't help but wonder how many bridesmaid dresses are hanging in closets across North America that have been worn exactly once. I work with women, and this one gal was telling me she had four of those things hanging up at home. I've been very lucky; never married, and un-popular enough that I've never been asked to be in a wedding party even once. Trust me....I'm okay with that! (LOL)
I struggled with decluttering purses...I just paid so much for them, but had them tucked away in a bin in storage...it wasn't until I found some that were getting wrinkled and ugly that I FINALLY was able to let go of the ones that were still good.
I've struggled with the bag decluttering. What's helped me is remembering that I never grabbed for that bag after I got bored with it and that I always go for certain features in a bag. Like opening with a zipper vs a button vs a complicated latch, single vs double vs multiple compartment styles, leather vs faux/vegan vs material types. A lot of my bags were missing the features I wanted. Also paying attention to satchel, tote, crossbody, hobo, bucket, backpack etc. preferences. Someone else could be enjoying those styles more than I would.
Great video! Your conversation about the clock really hit home. Our oldest daughter is very much like me in that regard whereas our youngest daughter is NOT tied to sentimental things at all. One holds on tight and the other is gathering up bags of items to bring to goodwill without a moment’s thought! Makes me wish I was more like her lol
Your idea about symbols is spot on! My wedding ring, for example, does not make me more married when I wear it, nor does it make me less married when I don't. Love your channel!
Oh gosh! You let go of some tough choices, that camping kettle and that 20s headband! I don’t think I could have talked myself into letting go of such sentimental or pretty things 😅 True minimalism!
Thank you for sharing all your reasons. I've got loads of sentimental bits to declutter. They don't take up THAT much space but I sure don't need all 4 yearbooks from highschool... I can photograph the best bits and chuck them! Apart from maybe senior yearbook....
Thank you so much for sharing this. I really appreciate how genuine you present your thoughts, convictions, struggles and experience in minimizing and decluttering life. I am a new subscriber and enjoying your very helpful and encouraging videos.
I didnt know the coffee maker was considered a camping thing, here in Mexico it's pretty normal to have those on the stove top for daily coffee making o.o
Absolutely. I always find it much easier to declutter if i have someone close with me. I seem to process things verbally, and then it's easy to let it go.
I love your channel, I will subscribe. I am trying to find two rugs exactly as you have, I have an open concept home, so I need two rugs to tie in with each other, I have almost the same couch... no coffee table, and I am very intentional, once you declutter you never want anything in your home you have no use for. I am holding onto a few sentimental items, I am ruthless except for the sentimental
Dear Elin, I love your videos. I watched them all. Many thanks. You deserve alot more subscribers. Look forward to watch many more good videos with great content. Best wishes,
Haha, my family has a problem with water /thermo bottles too😅 It’s something that we use every day and difficult to get reed off even if we have one too many. Loving your videos ❤️
I am in the throes of cleaning out to move to a smaller place -- a place with much less storage, too. I romanticize about being a minimalism, but now it's been made a reality. I love your vids so I can also get rid of the "blue camp coffee pot" and the "20s costume head thingy." One thing I'm finding that I really dislike are stand alone DISPLAY SHELVES -- yuck, and I have two with (I thought) tastefully arranged knick-knacks. No more white ceramic crap and wooden caa-caa sitting at just the correct angles on a glass top. That shit's going! Thank you.
Just found your channel and I really like the vibe! Looking forward seeing more videos from you! Not sure what you ended up doing with the decluttered stuff but as you mentioned "donating" I have a few thoughts on that. Something that I personally prefer when decluttering is selling the excess stuff instead of donating. Donating might be the easiest and the fastest way but not every item finds a new home that way and might end up thrown away. That's way I recommend people to try to sell stuff first to other people online so the decluttering process can be as sustainable as possible❣️ It's a wonderful idea to think "this item will be used more by somebody else" but donating might not do the trick, unfortunately. :(
Yes! I totally agree! I talk about that exact issue in my selling-on-poshmark video -- that items are more likely to get a second life if we sell them!
I struggle to sell things where I live and I'm tired looking at them waiting for someone to buy. What I did a few weeks ago was leaving all The items I wanted to donate at the end of my driveway. I organized them in a way to make them look appealing and not look like just a pile of garbage. Items that were broken, stained, very faded, had missing pieces were thrown out. I hate it when people donate things that aren't useful anymore just as long it's out of their house. Somebody else has to go through that. Then every bag that had clothes in it, I labeled them and their size. I grouped the items together that were all home decor, toys, office supplies/books to make it easier for the people to see what was all in there. Then a whole family stopped by, they had a teen daughter that could wear my clothes which made me so happy. They picked up 80% of my stuff and everything was gone by the next day. Just like you said, not everything we drop off at a donation sites get sold and a lot of them are thrown to the dumpster as soon as we drop them off.
Loving your channel ❤️ I love an anti-haul haha. Im currently putting off decluttering because it is so hot in my house and we don't use AC lmao. also wanted to mention I recently started my own channel on sustainability and intentional living 💕
About how to declutter sentimental things, I pay attention to people and think in their shoes what I have right now could help them out their situation. I'll ask them if they'd like to try out the thing that I found useful, they are welcome to take it, and when the thing helped them through they could pass it on to the next person who needs it.
it may not be your home style but you could use the coffee pot as a vase. Does someone else in the family hold memories of it, that you could pass it along? Yes, ask your Sis💖
I really want to simplify my home, but sentimental items are extremely hard for me. It was hard for me to watch you get rid of those items and they aren't even mine.
Good point! Maybe I should have explained what I meant a bit more -- I've seen a lot of people around me buy bigger houses just because they need more storage space, or get external storage spaces for their stuff. Yes, in the short term maybe rent won't change just because of one item, but in the long run, it may increase my housing price if I don't declutter even some things that are hard to declutter. That's my thought process--but you are right, on a literal level, the one item won't jack up rent, so you got me! haha :)
Storing stuff does cost you!! It doesn’t matter where you live, the more stuff you have the more space you need as well as time spent managing your inventory and added stress from your clutter. The more stuff you have the longer it takes to manage it, if you have to move you need more boxes, more people to help, and a bigger truck, etc. This is coming from someone who didn’t realize that de cluttering is necessary and for years just thought I was unorganized, it really effected every aspect of my life. The TH-camr A Slob Comes Clean explains it the best with her container concept.
I took pictures with my phone of my kids baby clothes. I laid a bed nah together on the floor for each picture. I also count -I set a goal today of getting rid of 100 items. I did not reach the goal but I am giving away 35 used books to a food pantry with a kids book section, 2 pictures to a Democratic fundraiser silent auction, one book to a friend, so 38 items. Setting a numerical goal is just a motivator to get going. I don’t mind that I don’t reach my goal. By the way Ifind it heartening that you have a ph d. So do I. Education doesn’t mean we don’t struggle with clutter. Iris good use of my time to watch your channel and work on clutter reduction! Thanks from Jean
Does anybody know of any good places to donate good stuff to? I believe Goodwill is overpricing the stuff I donate so that people who really need help can't buy it. Ideas please?
Did you know you could actually sell the graduation clock for at least $50 to encourage kids in other countries to study hard and go to their dream University?
I LOVE your SOOTHING VOICE instead of some people who scream and talk a minute a mile when talking about depression, decluttering, organizing etc. Your voice actually LOWERS MY ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION🤗.

Smart, because we all do need SOME sentimental pieces--good to limit them and have them in a spot where you know exactly where they are.
pro trick: watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies these days.
@Ben Prince yea, been using flixzone for years myself :)
I like the coffee pot as a decorative object. Love the color
The coffee pot is cool. I'd keep it and use it to hold flowers or wooden spoons or something. ☺️
I love hearing your thoughts on the psychology behind decluttering and minimalism, I think about these things too! Fun 😁

Aw, love door county!
My dad is a clinical psychologist. 60 plus years! He’s still working PT at 89.
Finally, someone who shares my idea of what an anti-haul is! 🤗 Love your channel, btw!

We keep our camping coffee pot so we can make coffee when the electricity is out.
Yes! Thank God for coffee! ☕❤
:)
I have graniteware coffee pot without the lid. It is perfect for watering my houseplants.

Very glad I found your channel! I find all of your content relatable and uplifting. Wishing you luck with your minimalism and youtube journey!

Just because we declutter objects doesn’t mean we lose the memories 😊
You could turn the coffee pot into a flower vase? Or use it to water your plants 🌱
Creative idea!
You can use the coffee pot as a vase for flowers.
I would probably repurpose the coffee pot as a neat vase.
I like having a sort of eulogy for the tough sentimental items lol. Setting aside just a little bit of time to reflect with it then let it go.
Smart! That actually might help with the letting go process!
Absolutely. I always find it much easier to declutter if i have someone close with me. I seem to process things verbally, and then it's easy to let it go.

Randomm.... but what kind of plant is that behind you? Very pretty!
Such a satisfying feeling to be 'liker' number 1,000😁🤣
haha thank you!!!
When I got rid of my wedding dress
Love your talking about symbols...
Take digital photos of the sentimental items if you ever want to revisit them for the memories.
I was watching this video in like ( NO NOT THAT ONE! THIS IS NICE KEEP IT , ITS JUST VERY LITTE SPACE IT HOLDS ) LOL!!!
What lenses do you use?! 😱😍
Great video
Thank you!
I chuckled at the fact that you camped as a child but didn’t discover until adulthood that Thermoses also keep things cold 😁
It would look nice with daisies in it.
Does anybody know of any good places to donate good stuff to? I believe Goodwill is overpricing the stuff I donate so that people who really need help can't buy it. Ideas please?
Why not ask at your church, they will probably have a list of places that need donations either for sale or to,pass on to people in need.xx
Our town has an ASPCA thrift shop and Savannah Hospice Thrift Shop. GW is a PROFIT AGENCY. DO NOT DONATE THERE!
Did you know you could actually sell the graduation clock for at least $50 to encourage kids in other countries to study hard and go to their dream University?
❤
Go camping!
You are missing out 😁
