    Knowing when to quit is one of the most challenging things to figure out in life. In this video I talk a bit about this as it pertains specifically to the path I’ve taken. Many of you know that I have a burning passion for the art of leather craft and some of you may even know that I even had a leather business before pursuing a career on TH-cam. At the time I didn’t know it, nor did I want to admit it but sometimes no matter how hard you work at something, it may not work out. There are times in life where you need to set whatever that something is that you love aside, as it may just not be the right time for it. You see, no matter how hard I tried at my leather business it just never really took off. I had given it my all and now, years later, I sit back and remember that the day I decided to move on was the same day I started my TH-cam channel. Lately I have really been feeling the urge to get out my leather tools and supplies and set up a little area in my garage so that I can get back to tinkering and use this hobby as an outlet. I find that I now have a new appreciation for working with leather, and that it serves a different, healthier purpose in my life then it did years ago. It is now the outlet that I can use to disconnect, reflect, and use to slow down from the career I love. A BIG thank you to my buddy Jeff for building me an amazing bench in literally a day. It’s so important to have a thing other than your thing, so that you don’t get sick of the thing that is your thing - watch the video and it will all make sense I PROMISE!

    Hahaha I love Pete's passion for his leather working tools. I think there's something so special about analog and tactile stuff. That's why I have a weird obsession with mechanical watches. There's just something so special about not-digital-stuff that is so good for the soul!

    Inspiring video, thank you Peter! I had a similar experience about 2 years ago when I put my career as a jazz musician on hold and decided to pursue photography. It's been an awesome 2 years and I feel like this is just the beginning. I've never been happier than as a portrait photographer and now the time I play music is much more satisfying. It's so important to be present and just stop trying to force things to happen, which I did for a long time.

    Very inspiring Pete, 2 years ago I closed my framing business of 11 years. After trying to make it work and alot of frustrating times. I found my passion filming and fishing! I still work on completely being ok with it. But I'm excited for where I'm going! Love this video and as always love your content!

    I’ve learned this lesson many times as my health kicked my butt, but have yet to find that thing that provides a good living. My custom photography was just taking off but walking with two canes and having mini-strokes falling once more at one of my last weddings decided it was time. Now I’m in a wheelchair most of the time. I did local events and shows for a while and that was just going well, then I ended up in the ER for an allergic reaction to another vendor’s items. And so that too came to an end.
    Getting found online is a difficult art all in itself. I tried posting regularly and whatnot, but still waiting for that thing that is my thing to be the bill paying thing. Writing is my thing and putting that in books and videos brings me joy…ya know except for listening to my own voice… but still waiting for that time when everything just clicks into place. My other things are creating coloring books and Pieces of Light.
    “If we don’t try, we don’t do. If we don’t do, then what are we here on this Earth for?” is a favorite quote of mine. I’m always doing, just hoping for all that doing to pay off one of these days.
    (That quote is from the movie Shenandoah by the way.)
    You need some Ford tractors to go with your Ford Trucks there Peter.

    I’ve spent the last 7 years garment sewing and the last three and a half talking/demoing on my TH-cam channel. The last year I’ve lost interest but kept going because it was my income but I ended up with a second channel for other creative endeavours. Then running two channels was too much so I’ve come back to my main channel and announced I am pivoting, taking back my happiness and excitement for TH-cam. All this to say I can really relate to what you talked about. Maybe I’ll come back to sewing one day when I recover from the burnout it caused. Thanks for sharing.

    Great example of taking action and starting something new. Many of us struggle with that first step because we’re afraid of failing or not knowing what to do next. It’s taken you 8 years to get where you are. I thank you for sharing that and letting us know that hard work, intuition, and perseverance pays off. Ah, sometimes luck plays a small part.

  • @ericvasquez161
    @ericvasquez161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The timing for this video couldn’t have been more perfect. I used to have a TH-cam channel called Teach Me To Design a few years ago, and then even tried graphic design coaching to try and help others after working as a professional for the last 15 years. It never really got to a point where I was able to make money from it after working my arse off for 4 years, so I decided to hang it up and just focus on my career. I’m glad I tried both things, and I can honestly say when I was doing it I gave it my all. Now I just take on passion projects I’m excited about and I recently got back into making music, which I haven’t done since before deciding to become a graphic designer. I’m happy to say that it serves a new purpose for me now, very similar to what you described with your leather work. Thanks for sharing this Pete - it’s nice to see some real ones who aren’t just making it seem so easy all of the time.

    Great point and life lesson. I had to learn and accept that some things happen when THEY are supposed to, not when you want it to. But it's funny, because sometimes, stepping away from a passion allows you to build up something else that provides resources to your passion and when the passion returns it not only stands, it runs effortlessly! Such a great video.

    Crafting will never die, just the crafters themselves.
    Learn a craft and people will follow.
    Following the pack, trying to lead the trends before others, and trying to be innovative is a key to failure unless you get lucky every single time. If you do that, and are a craft maker or producer, you can still fall back on your craft.. especially if it's available to do in many countries.

    Seasons of life, struggles of life {parent passing away}, job changes, energy fluctuations.
    So many things feel like they force you to put things aside. But I'm a firm believer in keeping those endeavors around {as you said you regretting getting rid of our tools once}. Acknowledge and don't lose the pieces of who you were.
