A year after my son passed away and my marriage fell apart, I moved suddenly to Alaska to be a private housekeeper for a family with a 6000sqft home. They had 2 weiner dogs and a larger dog they didn't know the breed of named Gucci. Gucci turned out to be the therapy dog I didn't know I needed. She was not the alpha dog but she was my favorite. I swear everytime I even thought of my son or his death, she would end up in my lap or at my side day or night. I really felt she cared deeply for me. I ended up returning to PNW months later after learning my daughter was pregnant and I would have my first grandchild. I would have taken Gucci with me if the family would have let me. I just recently with the help of my friends learned Gucci is a Hovawart breed. I am hoping to adopt this breed at some point. The Love, loyalty and connection I had with Gucci was my saving grace honestly. I will never forget her..💜

It's not possibile to explain how deep was my bond with my hovy, Gill. I was proud of her, she was loyal, brave and smart. She loved food as much she loved life, tireless and kidder. She's still making me smile even if she passed away 3 months ago, she was my super dog. I know she'll always guard me.
Just 2 weeks ago, put my sweet girl to rest. She was black and tan, and had the most honest eyes. Its not fair, the control we have. My poor Paisley, I'll miss you forever

Ive been a dog sitter for my neighbors hovawart for 5 years now - since the purchase. Now the owner decided to move closer to family, and into the city, so now she is mine. Even though I never had a dog of my own, im confident that she will learn with me, and be my best friend for many years to come. Cant wait to move in with her. I love her so much, she is so clever and always gets very happy when I come to her. Can really recommend the breed.
I had a Hovawart as a teenager. He was very affectionate, gentle and beautiful. Easily trainable. Like you said, suspicious of strangers. I felt so safe with him. I would definitely get another one.
Well, you wanted comments. What can I say, living experience with Hovawart for over 30 years. Always have one or two at the same time and both males and females. Very loyal, but also demanding dog. NOT a "couchdog", it needs to have a good and fair "packleader", constant training and exercise to keep it happy. Long walks are not the only thing, it also needs some play or work with the "head". Small exercise with the nose are just fine and play with the toys, that it can relief the energy. Then it will be just fine. Owning a Hovawart is more like a way of life, it is not a dog that can be put on a side, when something much more important is on. It is a family member, which should always be there where the pack and action is. Will always have one or two in my pack, life will definitely not be dull or boring, always something is going on.

He had a booming strong bark that made him sound like something at least twice his size. He rarely barked and got along well with our dominant female American bulldog and our two small pomeranians. There is also a 4th color - lion marking. They are a beautiful mixture of blonde and brown and touches of white with gorgeous black markings around their eyes that almost looks as if eyeliner had been drawn around them. If it were possible to post a photo here, I'd be able to show you one of the most beautiful Hovawarts! It is also important to add that they are not only family-friendly dogs - they are child-friendly and have more patience with very young and even loud and wild children than any other dog breed that I know of.
I had a hovie. Barrett was such a good boy. Surprising athletic, very intelligent, and a very even and calm temperament. The coat is soft and silky. I have to say that hovie breeders are incredibly loyal to the breed. Took him everywhere. His abilities to sense things never ceased to amaze me. A difficult breed to acquire as you must be a true dog person to even be considered for a puppy. They are not everyone and they can be stubborn. You must be firm, but always gentle. I could go on all day about hovies. Any owner or breeder could.
we had one, a long time ago. we're running a vinery, and back then, we had seasonal workers. they came into our house for lunch every day, from 12pm to 1pm. during that time, our little big guy ( he was huge, even for a Hovi, at 60kg ) let them in. before and after, nope. you're not allowed here on your own. no one ever taught him about that, or never even thought about it. and the nine hells had no mercy if someone got too close to me or my mom, without him knowing them. it's almost 20 years ago by now, but he was still the most awesome woof we ever had.
And they never run away our Hovawart would never run even if the gate was fully open I could call him back even if there was a bitch nearby he was interested in.
I had a dog that looked just like the black and brown Hovawart. He was half german shepherd and half black lab. He was 110 pounds, a big boy that thought he was a lap dog. I miss him dearly.
I have a Hovawart she is very very quiet never makes a sound in less she outside barking at something and she doesn’t bark unless there is coyote like right next to the house but she don’t bark a nothing else at all she sounds like chewbacca when she playing with the other dog’s.
I have a Hovawart male, that I name Chewbacca, For that very reason, making the sounds from day one, hahaha! He's now 6 years, and my best partner, and it's been really something else, my best times, is win Chewbacca trains other dog's, that are out of control, and he's 100% right there with me, and they are one of the best dog fighters, there been a few times, and yet great at home depot, so cool..... but that's are job training out of control dog's, we have saved many from being sent to be euthanized.
I love my big guy. He is easy to train and loves to cuddle. I would not recommend one as a first or second dog. They need a strong and benevolent owner. But he is my favorite dog evere
