E Mixolydian Mode: E F# G# A B C# D (E)
Mixolydian Mode is basically like a major scale, with a flattened 7th step:
Major Scale: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 - Mixolydian Mode: 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7
Notice how I'm playing around with a bluesy sounding minor 3rd (G) in the intro...that sorta vibe fits naturally into the Mixolydian universe :)
Also - try playing around with B Minor Pentatonic, C# Minor Pentatonic and F# Minor Pentatonic!

I see a lot of questions about modes in here and if you're serious about using them then this might help..
Modes can be build from any scale but the most common ones are built from the major scale. Most theorists start with C because there are no sharps or flats.
C major is C D E F G A B (bear with me)
when you play the C major scale and designate D as the key/tonic note then you're playing the D dorian mode and can play it over a Dm chord and it will "fit" nicely.
The following list should be helpful..
C Ionian (major scale)
D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
A Aeolian (Am - Natural minor or relative minor)
B Locrian (seldom used and is usually played over a Bm7b5 chord in this case)
this rule applies to every major scale, ie. if I use the D major scale,
Chords in a D major progression D Em F#m G A7 Bm C#dim or C#m7b5
D Ionian
E Dorian
F# Phrygian
G Lydian
A Mixolydian
B Aeolian
C# Locrian
you can build modes for other types of scales the same way eg. Harmonic Minor modes.

E mixolidian comes from A major so you can use A major but focusing on resolving on the note E. Em pentatonic also sounds cool

Hey, Sorry to restart this coment after 6 years but, didnt you mean Bm Pentatonic? Almost sure Em Pentatonic has a flat 3rd which will clash with E Mixolydian

@@atleon8974 I think both. You can resolve the Em 3rd to maj 3 in a Clapton blues type of thing. Bm penta would be a stripped back Dorian.

Start with an A Major scale and then switch around to an E Major scale...both scales sound great with both chords! I love this backing.
You could also "think" F# Minor..
i can finally feel the modes thanx to quist - all about the chords ur playing with.

You can certainly make E dorian work over this! Try singing a third though... you will see it wants to be "major" rather than "minor"... Best, Q
Chord progression E - D with E bass on both is definetly E mixolydian. You can use E dorian using the G note as a passing note.

+Francois DuJour Did you try Dorian, Ionian, and Aeolian on this track? Cause they all kinda work. It's a magic track! I was able to employ E Mixolydian, E Dorian, E Aeolian, plus the E major/minor pentatonic. The thirds must have been largely ambiguous here, I guess.

Try mixing a little phrygian in when jamming to this (basically modulate to the key of the five chord, or give 'sol' a leading tone)
A G natural doesn't work against a G sharp but that minor third works in Dorian or Aeolian if you flat the 6th

played at the 5th string , 7th fret

Guitar players I have a question So if I am playing to a Mixolydian backing track should I know the theory behind what note sound best over what chord or would you say most people just plug in the mixolydian and play. Mixolydian is just an example.
