I feel like those exhaust fans would be more effective if the case actually had an "inlet" somewhere, instead of just assuming air is going to squeeze through the various cracks and holes.
Also, some sort of thermal pad or something to transfer heat from the back of the pi into the aluminum chassis would be wonderful. Help keep everything that isn't the SOC cool, and let the pi run harder without having to turn on the cooling fans. If you don't want the side of the case getting warm for whatever reason, you could always just not install the pad.

    • @Level2Jeff

This reminds me of Linus from LTT's rule - never put the side panel on until the PC has posted. The RGB fans on the back are just simple 2-wire fans with built-in RGB controllers, so they aren't able to be controlled by the Pironman case's controller which is a bit disappointing. They also eventually go out of sync with each other and display different colours, which you can't reset without removing power to them.
I also noticed you've got a Pi NAS in progress, the colour looks great!

I bought one this week and have been stress testing it. By default, it's already a beast. I’ve never seen the CPU climb above 60°C, and it’s hard to make it overheat even if you reduce the fan kick-in threshold. I didn’t know they had a list of supported SSDs, but I’ve already ordered one. I placed it in, and it worked just fine, even though it was from a lesser-known brand. The only annoying part was doing the bottom two screws with the SSD hat, but other than that, it's pretty easy to assemble. I’ve always wanted something like this since I’m a major PC geek. The price was definitely worth it for me.

I just finished assembling 3 of the Pironman 5 cases. One of them went together without an issue. The other two both suffered from problems with the SD card extender. Without the extenders, the Pi5's SD readers worked every time, but once the extenders were installed the Pis would not boot, giving read error messages for the SD card.
Removing the extender after the case is built requires #%^* major disassembly. I finally omitted the extenders from those two cases, and booted from a USB or the SSD. (I wasn't smart enough to first configure the Pi for USB boot prior reassembling the case, so I had to partially disassemble the case to access the Pi's SD reader. That stunt requires some fiddling with the SD card held in tweezers for insertion and subsequent removal.)
Like Jeff, I had trouble with the SSD board not getting power. After a lot of trial and error, I replaced the ribbon cable and one of the two-wire jumpers. I wish I could state exactly what caused the power problem, but after some poking around the power issue was resolved.
Fortunately, Sunfounder included some spare ribbons and wires. I should note that they also include extra screws and standoffs which saved me some crawling around the basement floor trying to track down the several screws I dropped.
Jeff's comments about the aesthetics are on target. I have experienced problems with the SD extenders on some other Sunfounder products. Still the little boxes look pretty cool in operation. I'm glad to have them. Are they worth the price? If I divide the price by the hours taken to get them all operational, I had some cheap entertainment.

80$ does seem bit steep of a price, but the fan it uses seems to be some sort of standard size at least so could make it worth it from the cooling perspective.. Fans are known not to last after all. And Argon One for example has some sort of weirdly sized fan and uses more uncommon connector (Atleast this was the case with V2, not sure about V3, it's all on their forums).
I would probably gladly buy cheaper version of Pironman 5 without LCD and RGB if they offered such an option, because while they can be fun and quirky features to have, they aren't really an absolute necessity for Pi, especially when it most likely will be sitting in the dark corner of your room where it might be at times difficult to access or look at.

The ICE Tower CPU cooler on the Pi is from Pi52 and that is most likely where the fans come from too. My ICE Towers were delivered with both the standard black and the RGB fan and that RGB fan flickers the exact same way as yours do.
Given that the case is 75 Euro but includes the ICE tower (25 Euro) and an NVMe hat (15 Euro) , 35 Euro for the case and the OLED is not that expensive.
Would I buy this ? No, but that is mainly because I don't like a bling-bling case with windows and RGB.

Thoughts on this Pironman vs the Argon ONE V3 M.2 NVME PCIE Case? My Pi 5 will primarily be used as a desktop PC and a way for me to play with and learn Linux. Maybe run PiHole, a few things like that.

    • @Level2Jeff
      @Level2Jeff  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

This one is more flashy, the Argon ONE V3 is more understated. I think with the newer firmware they have, Argon Forty have a slightly more robust setup (IMO), though they do bury the microSD card away, which takes away a little of the flexibility you get with this case.

Not expensive at all. Stamping and bending the metal parts needs to be really precise to get screwholes and ports to line up correctly. That alone is costly. Plus all the other parts. Compare with the cost of what you put inside maybe it seems expensive but think of it as a pc desktop case and it seems like a good deal.

I had an issue with a Blu-ray player by Sony that wouldn't power up. It turns out that it was using HDMI CEC to try and find and turn on other Sony devices such as the TV it was connected to. Since I was using a 5-port HDMI switch and an LG TV. it wouldn't start since it was not getting the CEC handshake back the OSNY TV would have supplied if it was connected after the TV powered on in response to the CEC challenge request. The solution was to turn it on with the HDMI disconnected and it would change the default setting for the CEC configuration. I was fine after that. I got a solution from a Reddit post and confirmed it is using the player's manual buried in a section on HDMI specifications. at the back of the manual.

I'm VERY tempted to get this just to have it sit on my Y70, looking like a reversed almost mini version of it. I would have to wrap the alu bits white outside and black inside like my Y70.
Or maybe INSIDE my Y70... *hmmm* I do kinda have things I could use a Pi for... I could use a whole bunch of other things for those things just as well, but I need to have some purported use for the thing when I inevitably get asked why my computer has a smaller version of itself on top or inside of it self, and what the thing actually does.

So, a few things here, if this is $80 just for a case that's MEGA MEGA overpriced. Just think, you can buy literal mid or full sized towers for a legit computer for LESS than $80 that have the same if not more features etc. Yes, yes, I know it's not the same, but still. For $80 and how little work they actually had to do to bend a few metal pieces, cut some acrylic, add a tiny OLED and some RGB fans etc it just seems super over priced but it may just be that market, there may not be many Pi cases to choose from or people that make them.
