This piece is composed for flute alto and guitar. Takemitsu uses the guitar rather often, probably by analogy with a traditional Japanese instrument. The song of the flute is splendid. Using a flute alto allows gaining some tones in the medium range, and the sonority of the instrument is splendid. The guitar is not strictly limited to the accompanying: it happens sometimes that some melodic cells are given to it. All in all, an austere but highly successful piece of Takemitsu.
1981 was such a fairytale-like year for me ,as I was then only aged 11 and living out an unworried childhood and this heavenly-sounding and so bewitchingly soothing musical work so wonderfully befits the mood of those bygone forever carefree days... I am deeply beholden to Toru Takemitsu for this spellbinding musical work.
Its masterwork in yrrm of progression 'toward the sea' , and a fascinating blend of influences; globally, its Debussy flavor, but dont you feel the guitar sounds like the best MacLaughlin, when he plays his jazz, not Indian stuffs, say in his unplugged My goals beyond? I find in this piece of Takemitsu the same quest beyond the six strings of the light instrument, which can resonate like an ocean of unheard harmonies
Hah! Your review is also very impressionistic just like the music. I'm not sure I understood the Vermesser bit. Are you really a surveyor? I assume not... Dx
I think this could be called abstract programme music, in that it's basically atonal and using modern or completely original compositional methods, yet why can I almost feel the cold salty sea air as I listen to it?
Not yet. I have no ways of leaving this house. It's very complicated. I must first finish university and then get a job, meet someone with whom i could make a living... pfff it's too complicated.
Good background, ambient music, but doesn't congeal too well. The composer doesn't know how to keep a piece together and moving along, a problem with a lot of contemp. music (of the suspenseful, meandering kind). In short, too dry and passive.
I think if you don't get it and it doesn't hang together for you then that is of course a very relevant observation. Oddly I felt the same way for a few listens; really waiting for things to shift, focussing on any tiny consistencies like on a piece of driftwood, looking for some sense of repetition or unifying figure. I can see a few more now but I think I love it now because I stopped looking. I agree about your analysis of modern composers and this did initially look like a one-trick set up with all the flutter tongueing etc and I initially felt sorry for the flautist. No melody for this poor sap. But i love it now. Dx
This japanese musical work so deeply , so wonderfully soothes and even heals the soul of the listener and this is the thing ,which bestows upon this work such great worth.

Bien écrit :-) Ca reste profond, évocateur et me fait juste penser à l'écume grise de vagues enflées & paresseuses sous un ciel muet et fuligineux !
I've only recently started to notice, but I see your comments on a lot of music videos I like. I enjoy reading your insights, thank you!

曲名:朝向大海 Tōru Takemitsu: Toward the sea

Not atonal
Ricorda DEBUSSY, Musica per flauto, arpa..
What an awful place for an ad, completely broke the hypnotic sense of the piece
Yes ,indeed...
That’s why you get TH-cam premium
It shows 空"Kuu" in buddhism...
This heavenly musical work links the soul of the listener mostly with the true japanese belief - Shinto.
😔🍎🍁
Is it cold in here?
No ,this heavenly musical work so wonderful warms the soul of the listener...
This music is rather difficult for perception.

My mother is idiot, she's still treating me as a baby.
I must escape from this house as soon as possible
Am I missing something, or is this just not related to the music?
I see this guy on TH-cam, a lot... He's got great taste in music, but his mom needs to chill.
Did you leave the house? 2 years passed after the comment.
Not yet. I have no ways of leaving this house. It's very complicated. I must first finish university and then get a job, meet someone with whom i could make a living... pfff it's too complicated.
