      I can not fathom your comment ?!?! I started gardening with potatoes first.!!? I Had elderly neighbours when I was 10 that would give me 20$ to plant 15 rows of their potatoes 😂 and I also would just plant everything else for the peace it gave me .. Dill, cucumbers, carrots and broccoli!! I believe potatoes are the easiest of the ones I did. I
      Just harvested a quick row in my own garden tonight to see my progress actually. Going to leave them another two weeks seeing it’s plus 30 all week long in Alberta 🇨🇦

    The slugs were prolific, despite picking literally 2500 this spring.
    They killed the plans, and, what I've dug up so far are filled with small cream colour worms.... sooo bummed.

    What root vegetables can be stored together? Also, my sweet potatoes got a bit of water on them, can I still store them? They were in a really cold area and sweated quite a bit. Not sopping wet, just damp to the touch. Thx! ☺️

      Yes, my house is in the 80's at the coolest in summer. And mid 40's everywhere but the living room in winter. Shed outside is an oven and freezer alternatively.

    • @Jeff-rd6hb
      @Jeff-rd6hb ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I store mine in cardboard boxes full of hay or straw in the darkest corner of my shop. The dry mulch acts as an insulator vs. extreme cold or hot temps, and it absorbs moisture while allowing airflow. It can get well over 100 in my shop or well below zero, but my potatoes & onions hold up really well storing them this way.
      Still need to inspect them every week or two for any signs of spoilage.

  • @mariethomas4703
    @mariethomas4703 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you recommend curing them? Is we don't have a greenhouse and living in a northern state?

    • @Jeff-rd6hb
      @Jeff-rd6hb ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lay them out in a dry place out of direct light. I use my garage floor. After about 2 weeks the skins will have toughened up enough for storage, then you can put them into mesh bags or cardboard boxes.

    Hi, wow, I just had a question about storing potatoes today and here you are! I was wondering about the other side of the season though, I have just bought some "seed" potatoes from a seed company to grow my own, but I don't have room to plant them all at once. I was wondering if storing them in a cool dark place in paper bags would work to save some to plant later. Southern hemisphere here, my season is just starting!

    • @juliekraft4102

    • @clairwilliams4093
      @clairwilliams4093 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@juliekraft4102 that's a good idea. And now I know how to store them for longer, so that I don't have to eat potatoes for breakfast, lunch and supper for a month after they are harvested 😃

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, with seed potatoes bought too soon you have two options....sprout them early and get a head start, or hold them back and try to prevent sprouting. Just like storage potatoes, dry, cool, and dark will prolong the inevitable. 🙂

    • @clairwilliams4093
      @clairwilliams4093 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms it's about time to start planting them, but I can only buy them in 9kg bags, which is too much for me. So I am going to try and hold some back to plant later in the season. My growing season is very long.
