This video actually made me realise why is proper fingering required. (As a background, i decided to "upgrade" from violin to cello, which kind of transfered few of the habits as well). Without the extended position i would most likely play it incorrectly for far more longer, resulting in bad habit that would be hard to unlearn. I will have to invest in teacher so I dont catch more of those. So once again, thank you , you have saved me probably month of relearning :)

This video really helped my eight year old learn to play B flat on the A string. Thank you. Your description and chosen camera angles are perfect.
What is the purpose of the really short bow?

Loved it. Thank you. I'm learning because my 5 year old is learning and she would not practice. Now she is practicing much more if we do it together, but I'm a little bored with twinkle twinkle and lightly row. I'm trying to learn real songs but I need to know how to move my left hand without getting lost.
My daughter's cello teacher watched the video and gave you the stamp of approval because she said your technique is good unlike a lot of other vids. So thanks!

Thank you, Mary! My niece is has just turned 6 years old and her mom (my sister) does what you do too. My entire pedagogy is rooted in this mantra: Love your technique before you love the music. And thank you to your little lady for joining us cello players!

I’ve just started (4th lesson) and my teacher has me playing the G on A string with 3rd finger. C on G string with 3rd finger. Not using 4th finger at all in 1st position. Is this a different technique as I haven’t seen this being used anywhere else? When using your fingering positions I don’t have hand cramping or a painful shoulder. What am I doing wrong?

    I have a quartion please
I am trying to play this phrase
on the G string 1st postion:
    B-A-B-C#
    2-1-2-4
but when trying to play A-B (1-2 extended) it is always out of tune OR i have to move my hand so it's no legato then or sounds clunky
    any tips?

What about when your 1st finger is in 1st position, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are extended? Does the thumb still align with the 2nd finger? Is this considered 2nd position with a 1st finger extension that goes back?

Hi @Jonathan at 00:18-00:23 I hear "I want you to pull up the partition that is linked below Für Elise" but I can't see the link in the video description. It is more than five years since this was published, is the description still correct? Which link am I meant to click on?

How would you play a music that is in C minor? Or how is the position for playing in that key.

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

C minor has 3 flats (bémols) - Bb, Eb and Ab - and so we lose the open A string. Also, first position is extended back, the low one ( -1 ), on the A, D and G strings. Familiarise yourself with lower 2nd position th-cam.com/video/2q_DfpmkTRM/w-d-xo.html

My lightbulb moment came at age 70, when I decided to MAKE music since as a broken down old ex ballet dancer I could no longer dance TO music. RENT a cello to see if it's a good fit, and I guarantee you that the moment you put it against your chest and draw a long luxurious bow stroke across the lowest string the vibrations will hook you forever!
