  • Grolsch Going Baroque - Concerto for Horn and Orchestra.
In the late sixties of the former century thousands of people asked Grolsch who the composer was of the classical soundtrack that was used in the 'Vakmanschap is Meesterschap' TV commercials. Nobody knew that it was specially written for Grolsch by the young and talented Amsterdam musician Clous van Mechelen. Gerard Brummer, marketing and communications manager at Grolsch at that time, entrusted Clous van Mechelen to compose a full baroque concerto for flute and orchestra, based on the immense popular Grolsch tune. And so he did. The recording of this concerto took place in 1968 together with the recording of the soul version based on the same tune. Both versions where published the same year as a 45 rpm. EP. Somewhat later these two versions where completed with a concerto for oboe and for horn, a lute suite and a pop and jazz version. Recorded at Philips Recording Studios in Hilversum NL. All versions where published on a 33 rpm. LP. And here it is, the horn concerto, right from the vinyl record: 'Grolsch Thema con Variazione', Allegro - Largo - Allegro Molto.

Clous van Mechelen as Jan Vos in De lachende scheerkwast (1981)
Clous van Mechelen (born Jacob Philip (Jack) van Mechelen, 12 March 1941, Amsterdam) is a Dutch musician, arranger, and actor. Van Mechelen scored a minor hit in 1969 with his band The Butlers, and became widely known through the radio and television shows written and directed by Wim T. Schippers (he is referred to as his "house composer"[1]), in which he played the character Jan Vos and wrote songs for the various characters (including Barend Servet and Sjef van Oekel).[2]Biography[edit]Van Mechelen has been playing jazz[3] since the 1950s; Hans Dulfer played in his band.[4] He collaborated with a number of writers and artists associated with the Amsterdam daily newspaper Het Parool in the cabaret show De Inktvis, including Annie M. G. Schmidt.[5] He had considerable success writing music for commercials, notably for the Grolsch Brewery[6] (the "jazzy music" for the "Vakmanschap is Meesterschap" commercials[7]), for Nationale Nederlanden,[8] and for chicken.[9

Ik zie een zekere Piet Brummer opgevoerd als gitarist, toevallig ook familie?
