  • This episode is about Maude Callen (1898 -- 1990), a Nurse-Midwife, who singlehandedly brought health care to rural Pineville, S.C. and the surrounding area of Berkeley County in the early 1920s, continuing to the 1970s. The episode will tell how she delivered some 800 babies, and trained some 400 women as midwives in depressing, treacherous conditions. Many share their memories of Maude Callen and the invaluable medical service she provided as nurse and doctor to thousands in this low income area of South Carolina for generations.
This episode takes a tour of Maude Callen's life. It tells how she was orphaned at six and raised in the home of her uncle, the first black doctor in Tallahassee, Florida. Maude studied nursing at Florida A & M, and Tuskegee Institute. Upon graduating, she answered the call to become a medical missionary in Pineville, S.C. in 1923. This episode includes interviews and footage depicting the challenges she faced and overcame while serving the community, a 400-square mile area, as nurse-midwife, and becoming, for many, their doctor.

She is my inspiration, my greatest inspiration. I did my research paper on nurse leadership on her and ever since I read about her I knew I wanted to be a nurse midwife and public health nurse. I thank God for this mighty ancestor and her great legacy!

I celebrate you, MW Callen and thank you for your dedication. I stand on your shoulders as an ob-gyn physician and a descendant of enslaved midwives. Without you, there would be no me. May your memory continue to be a blessing.

Excellent documentary. My grandmother was born in 1939 in Pineville, Sc. Her last name was Rock. She passed away this year in January, but she told me she was delivered by a midwife in a small house in the woods. Her siblings were also born in Pineville, Sc as well.
It could have been by this extraordinary woman Maude Cullen, I don't know for sure, but possible.
I just learned about Maude Cullen at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington. D.C. and was so fascinated to learn more about her life and legacy.
This is a very interesting and informative documentary on the remarkable career of Maude Cullen.
    Thanks for sharing.

My Wife's Mama@8:03 My wife was born and raised in Cross, SC and was raised mostly by her Grandmother Mrs. Carrie Casey Butler. My wife always refers to her as Mama. If you go to the time on the video @8:03, you'll see Mama standing in the doorway of her front porch waving goodbye to Ms. Maude Callen. I met Mama for the first time in 1987, in Givhans, SC in the home she lived. This was also the same year my wife, her great Grandaughter and I were married. Mama was a very sweet woman. She practically raised most of my wife's biological mother's children also. As Mama got up in her 90's, one of her own Daughters, who we called Aunt Clorian, took care of her Mama up until Mama passed away at the age of 99 years old. Mama was born in 1900 in Givhans, SC where she was raised and where she finally gave up her spirit in 1999. She is still missed by all those who knew her and loved her, and of course, I am one of those people who loved her too.

This is fantastic! Would love to see "Delivered with Love," a documentary produced in the 1990s detailing the history of midwifery in South Carolina. It was shown during Season One of Call the Midwife, sometime in 2012.

As a student midwife here in the UK looking to know the history of midwifery this was beautiful. Studying the be a midwife is difficult these days and not only for what you learn but the hierarchy in the profession. Miss Maude Callen has made me want to stand my ground as well as help inspire change. What a wonderful women ❤I thank God for her inspiring story x

Maude propelled me into Midwifery. As a CNM I strive to provide my people with the care that they deserve! #CNM #StartedHere #IGotYou #StrongWomen #BornToBirth #StrengthBeyondReason #TrustYourMidwife! there is NO reason 1/3 of women need to deliver surgically. Know this!!!
