  • Jeff Goodman hosts an array of former players like Gene Smith, Horace Broadnax, Jaren Jackson, Mark Tillmon and Jerome Williams to tribute the late John Thompson, who passed away on Aug. 31. Thompson elevated a dead Georgetown basketball program to national prominence after taking over the program in 1972 and led the program until 1999. His Black teams and advocacy for his players in the face of institutional prejudice, particularly the racism suffered by Patrick Ewing, led him to become an icon in the eyes of Black Americans. Some even described mistaking Georgetown University for an HBCU because of the team's starring role in the Big East craze, and Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry of the 1980s. Thompson played for the Boston Celtics as Bill Russell's backup and spent the final years of his life commentating.

Man, I was 13 years old in 1981, all the hype around Patrick Ewing got me into College Basketball and growing up in the DMV I got to see a lot of Georgetown games on Channel 5. Those years playing against St. Johns, Syracuse...College basketball was NEVER better.

That's the same year I started watching them. I'm so thankful that players stayed in school all four years back then. Patrick Ewing and those squads made it to the championship game three out of his four years. Coach Thompson was the perfect man for the job!!

I got the same story as you. 14 in 81, grew up in Southeast DC, Big Patrick Ewing fan and I really fell in love with the Hoyas when Patrick came though I actually started watching college basketball a year earlier. My next door neighbor taught me all about college basketball when he introduced me to a kid who played for Indiana named Isiah Thomas. But, when Patrick came to the hilltop, I fell in love with the Hoyas, Coach Thompson and Georgetown University. Patrick is my guy!

I enjoyed listening to all these stories about coach Thompson. The gift and legacy that he left behind will be past on through his players to the rest of the world forever...

Gene was one of my favorite players back then because of his defense. He was great! Mark was a killer with the jump shots, Junkyard did it all, Jaren won a championship with the Spurs and was solid for the Hoyas. Horace Broadnax was solid with Michael Jackson in the back court. So happy to see these guys speak on their experiences with Coach Big John.

To Jean Smith, Jeron Jackson, Marc Tillman, and Broadnax. I thank you brothers for making my Ciao hood & teenage years so much better. I would go to school thinking I play for Georgetown back in 80’s. For Coach the best. I hope and pray in my Second life that I can be coached by coach John Thompson. Great stories from great wall or players
