Cleansing the Castle - The "Family-Friendly" Cagliostro Dub Edits

  • When the producers of Discotek Media were preparing The Castle of Cagliostro for its DVD release in 2014, they requested David Hayter to participate in the production of a "family-friendly" alternative mix of the 2000 Animaze dub. This sanitized version was also updated for Discotek's 2021 UHD release, with the participation of Les Claypool III, the audio engineer of the Animaze dub, who created a new baseline mix of the uncensored dub.

    I don't mind swearing - even in other Lupin dubs! - but the level of it in the Manga dub always felt more than a little at odds with the general tone of the movie so I like that they included this as an alternative. Even if some of the "son of a..." truncations are a little more obvious when directly compared like this, it flows well enough when you're watching the movie that I don't even notice anything missing.
    It is odd that considering the extra effort they put into this that the Streamline dub (where they couldn't even say "Lupin"!) seems to be the go-to English dub for streaming and theatrical re-releases.

      I think the mild swearing works pretty well with the tone of the movie when considering how prominently crime and murder is featured in it, though I agree that the harsher curses are a pretty big step in the wrong direction with how ultimately altruistic and romantic Castle of Cagliostro is.
      Wish there was a cut with the two bitches removed from the film, though I know that's being needlessly pedantic lol

      Yeah I REALLY wish they used the Manga dub instead of the streamline dub when it was re release because my friends who I took with to see a Lupin movie for the first time were beyond confused on the name changes. Should have brought them to a subbed version instead looking back

      I guess distributors weren't satisfied with the edits (especially if it was the 2014 edited version). In order to keep the film accessible for its intended audience, the distributors found it easier to use the Streamline dub.

      @@xerobeat9142 And like I mentioned in another comment, Zenigata says "damn" near the end of the film in the Streamline dub while lamenting Lupin's escape. So I find it odd to hear the mild cursing removed from the Manga dub when it's present in the Streamline dub.

      @@Anthonybchannel Not I. The Streamline dub is still a good dub and I prefer to keep my eyes on the visuals when watching these films / shows / etc. Renaming Lupin does suck, but Streamline didn't have a choice due to copyright issues at the time.

    Replacing damn with crap is a pretty interesting move

    Wow I saw the 1992 dub in theaters back in like 2017. Good times. Its a interesting version indeed how they cleaned it up for family viewing

    Reminds me of the of edits the Americans would make to the Showa Godzilla dubs.
    At the very least, the 2021 edit puts more effort towards the censoring.

    I don't have the 4K Blu-ray (only the earlier Discotek releases), but those 2021 edits are a frankly superheroic effort, and actually make it seem like a more viable way of watching the movie, even if I still have a preference for the uncensored Manga dub.

    I think it's strange how "hell" and "damn" are censored when I know the Streamline dub also used "damn". But I agree with the other edits; the more intense cursing is uncalled for.

    This feels like a TV edit of the Manga dub of The Castle of Cagliostro, I kind of like it, and this should be the streaming/theatrical rerelease dub for the film instead of the Streamline dub.
    But yeah, I still prefer the uncensored Manga dub. I do like how the retake of Lupin saying "Rest in peace" and "Darn it, Fujiko" sounds more like Solid Snake than his original voice. I wonder if they did get David Hayter back for retakes...
    But some of the sentence mixing is obvious that it sounds like TH-cam Poop. Or maybe just the usual TV edit, which does have sentence mixing a la YTP to reedit dialogue.

    HOW IS DAMN NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY. HOW DID IT TOOK ME THIS LONG TO FIND THAT OUT.
    Is really crap better then damn? Really?

    • @SavageGreywolf
      @SavageGreywolf 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      damn is a swear, it is considered very mild these days, but there was a time when it was shocking that Clark Gable said it in Gone With the Wind. Crap is not considered a swear or oath: in fact its mildness is itself a joke in some properties. Simpsons has done several jokes about it, the immediate one that comes to mind is Bart "Heard you swearing dad, mind if I join in? Crapboobscrap!"

    • @ginogatash4030
      @ginogatash4030 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SavageGreywolf still it's weird they went for that in the family friendly edits, like it's still something parents would probably take issue with compared to damn which seems to be a swear word only in America.

    Its funny that ig in america, dam is a much more sensitive swear or was. Because here in the uk, crap counts as a full fledge swear whiles dam isnt as balsthemous or isnt cared as much about.

      It's because the UK switched from religious-based dogma to "scientific"-based dogma.
