- Watch the trek our B-17 Aluminum Overcast made on May 23 from the Kermit Weeks Hangar to the EAA Aviation Museum's Eagle Hangar. This is the first time Aluminum Overcast has been inside the Eagle Hangar in 30 years! This ensures people can see this beautiful aircraft up close while we continue restoring and preserving it to keep all options available for its future.

I went for my 1st ride in this B17 at EAA Oshkosh 1994. As a private pilot I was offered the opportunity to take the pilot seat and control the plane for 10 minutes! What a thrill!! I have a photo of me flying it! I later had a chance to ride in it when it came to Naples, FL. I still wear the Air Force jacket from 1994 with this B17 on the back! I have missed seeing it at EAA Airventure and hope they can restore it to fly again!
My dad booked us a flight once a year on this B-17 for about 5 years in a row while I was growing up. I even still have the embroidered jacket they sold from my first flight when I was 11 years old though it's too small now lol. Lots of good memories on this aircraft with my dad who has sadly passed away now. Please keep this aircraft safe and preserved for future generations, thank you.
I grew up on this plane. My grandma worked in the eagle hangar gift shop, so got to climb around on it often as a kid. Its so good to see it home
Glad to hear that Aluminum Overcast is being restored and preserved. I would hate to see these great old airplanes disappear. I saw the Commemorative Air Force B-17, Sentimental Journey, when it came to Logan, Utah last year. Amazing machines. There were a bunch of signatures on the bomb bay doors, including Bud Anderson (WWII fighter pilot).
I had the chance to fly on this beautiful bird with a close friend who flew 27 missions over Germany in late 1945. He really enjoyed the ride! (So did I)
Such a majestic airplane. So glad she survived.
I was honored to flying on Aluminum Overcast back in 2001. One of the best things I ever did. I hope she flies again.

I gave myself a flight in it for my 55th birthday. Excellent.
It will be sad not to see it fly at airventure but thank goodness the EAA did the right thing when problems were discovered and grounded it. I hope it flies again but at least it is home and will be preserved. Can't wait to see it in July!!

I did a crawl through about 10 yrs ago when she was in Tulsa. I think the thing that surprised me most were the plywood floors in the cockpit area. And I came away with a newfound respect for the men who crewed these planes. Thank you one and all.

Very cool, I remember making some small parts for that when it was at United Airlines in SFO for service work. Mike Repas set it all up for it to be at United.
Only have to take one look at that aircraft to see what she represents...magnificent.
She is the 1st flying B17 I ever saw and flew in (6 times over many years) So glad to see her back together, if I ever have the chance again I'll fly in her once more.. 😍👍🇺🇸

Once-in-a-lifetime video, beautifully captured. So glad you shared this! I won't be attending AirVenture this year; my wife and I negotiated and I gave up OSH for Bomber Camp in Stockton, where I not only got to fly a bombing mission in the B-17 Ye Olde Pub but I also got to fly top cover in a T-6G for the B-17 on the first of the two bombing runs! I'm sure you understand. In any case I expect we'll be visiting OSH sometime before 2025. And anyway, I got my ride in this plane back in 2006 out of Moffett Field in CA, so we're well acquainted. Always good to know that she's safe, sound and sheltered.

As a Structal engineer, which of the three bolts take the tension load of the lower spar?

I got to meet those guys a few years back...in Detroit (opening for Amon Amarth). They came out into the lobby, took pics, signed merch and "jaw-jacked" with the people.
Great group of guys!
Side note: I did my instrument ticket at Willow Run, home of the Yankee Air Force. Many of my taxi clearances were..."follow the B-17...or B-25" (Yankee Lady & Yankee Warrior....both of which, I got free rides on!!!!)
Something about wing spar issues and will be never flown again? Sucks if it's true.
