    When I see these videos I keep thinking of the pilots and crew, Flying in an unpressurized, unheated aircraft at those altitudes, God bless them all, very few left now but not forgotten by me.

    Years back my brother in law and I arranged for my dad to get a ride in this plane at Manassas, VA. He worked on B-17's in WW-2 and had a WW-2 Vet hat on. These guys treated him like he was a king. They honored him and let him sit in the nose of the plane while in flight. Dad was thrilled and this was the best thing I could ever give my Dad. He has passed away but I will never forget the respect given to my father by these guys. [Sorry tears coming down.]

    Just flew in this bomber in Cincinnati last weekend. Absolutely awesome experience. I highly recommend this once in a lifetime opportunity to anyone even remotely thinking about it. There will come a day when this historical experience will be gone and starring at one in a museum will be your only option.

    Nothing like that sound! Every spring in North Idaho where I live a B-17 comes to the local airfield for show and rides. Every year I suddenly hear those 4 radials and instantly know what it is. As a kid in the 1960's in California i used to watch them fight fires in the hills behind my house. B-17 and P-51 are my two favorite planes of all time.

    On july 4, 1987 at about 10:00 am I had the great honor to set in the left seat and take the controls for about 15 min, not to long after that the FFA put a stop to that, you can only ride on it now, but that is a great experance

    What an awesome video! I've loved B-17's since I watched the 12 O'Clock High TV show back in the 60's. My greatest thrill was when I took a ride in this awesome plane years ago. This is without a doubt the most wonderful video of a surviving B-17 that I've ever seen. Such a proud bird! And that sound!

      Both my parents, born in 1919, often told me, they could hear them bombers coming for at least half an hour and wen they were on their way to Germany, the sun was blokked by the contrails. After that they could hear the impact of the bombs, 100+ miles away. BTW, we live near the German border, a part called Twente.

    *QUESTION: How did you get the props to spin so naturally???* Until somebody mentioned it, I was like, "Oh, Yeah" Hate that weird digital thing, where they look like they're spinning in slow motion or standing still, etc.

    • @WarbirdVideos
      @WarbirdVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In order to "blur" the props, the shutter speed of the camera must be at a low rate of about 1/60th of a second. That's where I set the camera for this video. Generally, if a camera is set to automatic, and you're shooting outside in daylight, the shutter speed will automatically be set to around 1/300 of a second to cut t amount of light that enters the camera for proper exposure. That fast of a shutter speed "freezes the prop in various places and the prop will either look like a pinwheel or worse. Sometimes you'll see the prop blades curved as they turn. Thats called "rolling shutter".
      So you need to have a neutral density filter on your camera, which is in effect is a very dark pair of sunglasses. This allows you to lower the shutter speed and blur the props without overexposing the image. Cell phones and gopros don't usually have manual exposure settings, but they sell ND filters for gopros that work pretty well.

      From Mike Mc: You have to know that ALL of the B-17s currently flyable are late-block license-built B-17Gs, either license-built by Lockheed's Vega division or by Douglas. Late in WW-II, Boeing had moved most of their bomber production over to building the B-29 Super Fortress and suspended most of their B-17 production at their plant #2 in Seattle. The Museum of Flight owns the last flyable Boeing-built, a B-17F, the only B-17F that is still flyable, but for all intents and purposes, it's grounded.
