  • The first big hit for the Mahotella Queens from way back in 1964. This number is an up-tempo love song about a girl named Thoko. The line-up of the Queens on this record comprises Nunu Maseko, Ethel Mngomezulu and Hilda Tloubatla.
Also included is a short clip of the Makgona Tsohle Band performing "Soweto Bump" from their TV series 'Mathaka' in 1983.

Same group - Mahotella Queens re-recorded this song in 1993 on the album "Women of the World".

Unfortunately this song hasn't been released in any digital format yet - what you hear is taken from the original record from 1964.

The Makgona Tsohle Band was the 'house band' at Mavuthela, the African music division of Gallo Africa. They were one of the greatest mbaqanga bands in SA during the '60s and '70s, through the '80s.
The footage of the guys is taken from a very shortlived TV series they did in 1982/3, called "Mathaka" (it was a mixture of comedy, music and drama). As far as I'm aware they made over 100 episodes before the show was cancelled, and this is the only piece of footage I have of it.

It's a very modest song with only a few lyrics, but basically it's a love song about a girl called Thoko. From what I can hear, they're singing "Thoko, ujola nobani... woza, Thoko" which means something like "Thoko, go steady with that guy... come, Thoko!"

Thank you for your kind words. The song you hear at the end of this video is called "Soweto Bump". It is available to buy on the CD "Mathaka Vol. 2" by Makgona Tsohle Band. You'll be able to find it on the sites Oneworld.co.za and Kalahari.net.

You know reminds me of the time when i was growing, we were exposed to this mpaqanga music and even today its still meaningful to me. This clearly depicts that you cannot disassociate yourself from your past. I still enjoy this music so much from the likes of Mahotella queens, ezitombi sese manje manje, Darkcity sisters etc.

hey my friend, i have a crazy story for you that confirms exactly what you say: in the 70s i was given a record which had the only infomation "super black jive" on the sleeve - at first i thought i was playing it on the wrong speed, but i checked it and it was 33, correct! then i realized by and by, that this was not the steel band music from trinidad, as the guy who gave me that record had told me, it was a this merry music from africa - we don´t have anyting like that here in germany, but within two days or so i was already completely in love and hooked to this music, haha - i even infected several friends with it and we formed a band and played music in that style (as good as we could) and we played on punk concerts in the early 80s and it was good fun - the next time i heard this music was from paul simon´s "graceland album" - then i heard about the mahotella queens and they even came to germany - i saw them twice, one time on a big jazz festival and - imagine that - one time even in this litle town here! it was crazy, almost unbelievable for me and a fantastic evening - i also enjoyed the appearance of mahlathini - unforgettable!
now, some months ago i finally found out who played on that old record of mine: west nkosi and the makgona tsohle band - yes, and i finally learned, that the original name of that music is "mbaqanga", which sounds much more appropriate to me than jive, haha...
when i hear and see them play in this video, it´s so incredibly familiar to me, it´s almost like coming home - although i have never been to africa and although i don´t understand a word of the language spoken, i´m still quite sure i do understand every "word" musically!
      love and greetings from germany
edit: i just looked closer at the pictures and the photo at 0:09 could have been taken at the show i saw - i´m trying to remember when this was, it must have been in the very early 90s, if i remember right - and i just realize that i probably have seen the makgona tsohle band as well that evening, without being aware, that it was the very band of my old record - oh boy! this IS crazy, no?

@MrTommybull Hello again. I'm always on the hunt for this kind of music in whatever format - shellac, vinyl, cassette, CD... and so on. Unfortunately, I haven't come across "Thoko No. 7" yet. The only versions that I have are "Thoko" (this original version, originally released in 1964) and a follow-up recording called "Bala Thoko" (released in 1965). If I do manage to track down "No. 7", I'll let you know ASAP!

Thanks for posting this video. Is there a complete video of the band playing at the end? They sound like Boyoyo but one of the other commenters said they are the Makgona Tsohle Band. Who ever they are that is wonderful footage and it would be nice to see all of it.

What makes the memory in the memory of a life that does not go back where happiness done with so little that much today only is gay and being lost. I loved the memory, do not live in longing to know who did what to do where repentance is not my thing.Congratulations to all of us, particularly stop you
