The title "Prince of Wales" is not a title that can be inherited from parent to child or any other relationship. The title is a 'gift' from the reigning monarch that can be given to anyone. WITH the title comes automatically, the Duchy of Cornwall. So, Prince William didn't actually 'inherit' it, as much as it turns out it was his father who decided to gift it to him. Not much of a difference, but it does make a difference.

As far as I understand the duchy of Cornwall is not "private" at all. It has always belonged to the Duke of Cornwall who is always the 1st in line to the throne... the Heir apparent. The title "Prince of Wales" has to be bestowed upon the heir... and can only be bestowed upon the male heir. The title "Duke of Cornwall" and the Scottish titles "Duke of Rothesay" and "Earl of Carrick", "Baron of Renfrew" ,"Lord of the Isles" and "Prince and Great Steward of Scotland" are automatically titles that the heir apparent carries. The Duchy of Cornwall and other lands that belong to the Earl of Carrick and Baron of Renfrew (and so on) are NOT private at all. Those Estates always belong to the heir... and never to the sovereign.

What they mean by possession
Most properties alluded to belong to the Royal family is held in trust for crown estate.
If I may ask how does a property automatically pass on to William what about the other child ,Harry?!
Only Windsor and Buckingham palace belong to the state. All other property is privately owned by the monarch and goes to first born - the one who gets the crown. It is not divided between the siblings. For example everything the queen owned including jewellery will go to Charles not divided between his siblings. When Charles dies everything will go to William and then William will pass on to George who is his first born thus heir to the throne. There are many individual properties in the estates that the other children live in. For ex, Frogmore cottage is part of Windsor estate and was gifted to Harry to use in his lifetime. When he passes the property goes back to reigning monarch as it is not owned by Harry. Harry is not an heir so will never inherit property or jewellery. He is only entitled to gifts made in a will such as part of his mothers inheritance or money his great grandmother left him.
The queen will probably gift money to her other children from her will, but all property and crown jewellery, including her personal collection(which she gifted to Katherine) will go to the reigning monarch.
