    A bit of a story, Voice of Resurgence was so strong because it was the original ability proposed for Emmara Tandris, though Wizards discovered this ability was way too strong, and reworked Emmara into basically unplayable pack filler.
    They didn't abandon the design however, as you can see. Their "balance" for the card was to push it to mythic and buff it by removing the legendary tag. By forcing people to spend more to get it, the power level of the card became balance, and everyone lived happily ever after in magical Wizards land.

    • @fernandobanda5734
      @fernandobanda5734 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is just half right. It was Emmara, yes, but it had nothing to do with balance. The card just shifted to mythic and they didn't want to have a guild legendary be mythic because the rest were rares.

I had just started playing about 1 week prior to gatewatch prerelease friend that got me into it convinced me to go and that was my promo rare, I’ve always kept it in my mill sideboard ever since, and yes it has won me quite a few games mainly when a leyline has come down mid game but I already have 20+ cards in their graveyard so it just OTK’s

    Adeline also has a mana value of 3, meaning it just barely skates by dying to Fatal Push (a very common removal spell in black) provided the opponent can't get the Revolt triggered. Actually now I realize a lot of these creatures hit that cmc. Anax even makes a token or two if he does get removed.

    12:17 hehehe... we all know.
    While Tarmogoyf isn't the powerhouse it once was, as Fatal Push really threatened it, the fact that it's still doing work and there are decks that can bring Tarmogoyf back faster than Fatal Push can do its work, and you can see why Tarmogoyf is such a staple.
    In fact, Tarmogoyf should be the prime example of how such a simple purpose can make a strong powerhouse with the right effects as we had seen with other cards like Murktide Regent, Delver of Secrets, and Gurmag Angler.

    Easy to miss, but Unlicensed Hearse fits the criteria here (it has a star in its statline, despite starting a vehicle card rather than a creature card). And it is easily better than any card on this list, Tarmogoyf included. Also, Voice somehow made it on here despite it not being a card with a star in its statline. It's just a 2/2, and the token it creates, in addition to not being a card itself, isn't given a power/toughness value at all, instead being granted by the token's characteristic defining ability.

      Milling combos are one of the worst in general because if they remove your Aberration or you never draw it, Traumatize didn't do anything (except maybe even help your opponent who now has a graveyard filled with stuff). • @collinbeal
      @collinbeal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Ashaya can do way crazier things than Cultivator Colossus can. CC only made this list because it's a combo piece in a popular deck, not because it's uniquely powerful. Ashaya can allow boardwipes to become one-sided, is harder for your opponent to remove than most creatures, can make landfall go bersek, can provide you crazy amounts of ramp, and can do some stupid combos as well, on top of being an even more massive creature than CC on average for less mana. My favorite way to play Ashaya is with Nissa, Who Shakes the World and Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider. You get Vorinclex down, then drop Nissa down and immediately ultimate her, filling your board with lands, growing your Ashaya, triggering landfall out the wazoo, and making all of your creatures indestructible due to them being lands. Perilous Vault is also really fun to play alongside it, as it takes out only your opponent's creatures due to stipulating non-land permanents.

    • @darianleyer5777
      @darianleyer5777 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should have seen number one coming.
      Since I decided that number three doesn't count, I nominate Serra Avatar to get on the list. It's a white avatar for 4WWW that has power and toughness equal to your life total, and whenever it hits your graveyard from anywhere, it gets shuffled into your library.
      Why did I choose this one to nominate over, say, Traproot Kami, a no-power Spirit for G that has defender, reach, and toughness equal to the number of forests on the battlefield regardless of controller?
      Simple: Lifelink, and ideally, Double Strike.
      In Commander, an Avatar can frequently deal more damage than a Marit Lage token, given how the format is slower. Even in other formats, if you cheat it out fast enough, it's basically a near-guaranteed win.
      However, with Yavimaya: Cradle of Growth, Traproot Kami bypasses the big problem of your opponents not controlling any forests.

      Soulless One costs 4, relies on very specific cards and even if you are playing them, you can expect, what, a 3/3 by turn four? If you put effort to make it big you're better off playing other cards that rely on your graveyard instead of a midsize creature that does nothing.

    I played Magic back in the day and in more recent years on Xbox 360/one. So I was never into the lingo because it was just me and a couple of friend's that played back in the day. "Threat of activation" is a new term to me so my question is is there a term for the opponent forgetting about the threat of activation?
    I forget what Magic game on Xbox it was I think the most recent one where they had an enchantment retreat to hagra whenever a land enters the battlefield you choose to have an opponent lose one life and you gain one life or target creature gains death touch it was a black card. I had evolving wilds and warped landscape that you sacrifice to put any basic land card on the battlefield tapped. So with the enchantment I could make an opponent lose 2 life with just one mama drop but I would not sacrifice them right away just in case I got another retreat to hagra out or needed that death touch. Many times I won the game because my opponent forgot about the death touch I could put on one of my creatures in an instant.
