Review: Far Cry 4

  • It's not quite bad enough to be "Far Cry 3 with elephants," so instead it's "Far Cry 3 but slightly better." Which is totally okay!
    Note: Apologies on any weird artifacting and missing frames. I was away with the family for the holidays while rendering this one, and my rickety old laptop that rendered this wasn't cut out for it :|
    Far Cry 4 is on Steam (but then it turns into uPlay) here: store.steampowered.com/app/298...

    I highly recommend anyone interested in this franchise check out Ziggy's Mod for Far Cry 3. It's a comprehensive mod that strips the game of virtually all of its irritating "Ubisoftness", from speeding up animations to removing plot-progress requirements for skills. With it installed, you're free to explore and conquer an emergent combat sandbox. It's an absolutely stellar piece of work that still receives regular updates from its dedicated and ambitious creator. Personally, I wont be buying Far Cry 4 until an iteration of Ziggy's Mod is released for it; it's that good.

    second he was never "Angry" Infact he was problably sitting back laughing and being entertained by what Ajay was doing. It was pure fun and entertainment watching Ajay destroy his Army. He literally even put Yuma on platter for Ajay to Hunt. He literally tells you this over one of his calls. He also reminisces on the past telling stories and giving subtle life lessons almost like a father kind of. I loved his calls lol I knew just from his tone that he never wanted to hurt Ajay.

    Sequels for games are playing it safe and just turning a series into the same boring monotonous tasks over and over again because they know that its easier to do that than to try something new and risk not making as much money as the previous game. Sequels are meant to provide a new look and improve the experience of a game series by giving you something fresh and new to play and experience.
    The best example of this is MGS3. Imagine if it wasn't the game we got and it was just another MGS1/2 military setting in another location. By the time MGSV releases, everybody would be bored to death of Metal Gear's setting and gameplay. The reason people still want more even after the ninth main iteration is because it changes so much between each title.
    Why can't games publishers and developers use games like these as an example to follow, rather than just causing their game series to become stale and eventually die out in the long run? And it isn't just Ubisoft pulling this crap.

    • @shajita
      @shajita 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      "BECAUSE IT'S TOO RISKY!"-Every guy in a suit.
      Seriously though, I agree with you. MGS3 was such a fresh experience coming off MGS1 and 2, and it's still worth replaying to this day simply because other games have moved away from that style.
      I don't know how many other people thinks about this, but I am sick and tired of the fact that many genuinely great games becomes slightly less polished shadows of their sequels. I love Far Cry 3, I've played many hours of it and I will continue to do so, but I fear that once Far Cry 4 hits my Steam, FC3 will just feel off in some ways.
      While many of these Ubisoft open-world games have stories that I personally find worth replaying (I do enjoy Ezio's origin story) it's just so hard getting into them when AC2 just plays like a worse Brotherhood, which is like a worse Revelations. And frankly, I find that kinda sad.

    • @NextGenVixen
      @NextGenVixen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      shajita "which is like a worse Revelations." And then there's ACIII, which is a worse ACIII: Liberation, which is a worse AC: Liberation HD, which is a worse AC: Freedom Cry, which is a worse ACIV: Black Flag, which is a worse AC: Rogue...Can''t wait 'til AC Unity spawns its sequels to be slightly better versions of itself -_-
      "Now with 10% less bugs!"

    • @shajita
      @shajita 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NextGenVixen That's exactly my point. I don't want so many genuinely great games to be overshadowed by it's younger brothers because the developers and publishers played it safe.
      There are some shining examples, like Zelda and Metal Gear Solid that does check out the usual boxes, but they always try to add a different flavors to the core mechanics, the "feel" of the game. I felt Assassin's Creed Black Flag did that for that franchise, but with Unity it was straight back into city-exploration and assassinations.
      It's a really sad state of affairs and as long as consumers continue to demand "safe bets", I don't see how it's gonna change.

    • @NextGenVixen
      @NextGenVixen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking of which, since no one seems to be covering it at all, AC: Rogue is like what Farcry 4 is to Farcry 3, but for ACIV, Unity aside, (which is a repeat of ACIII's buggy launch) all Ubisoft games this year seem to just be repeats of the previous game in each series.
      Having said that I really enjoyed AC: Rogue, because I loved ACIV and there's no tacked on MP mode :D

    • @shajita
      @shajita 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NextGenVixen I've yet to getting my hands on Rogue, as I'm waiting for the PC port (and praying that it works) but I did read a few reviews and I think it sounds interesting. Will definitely pick it up before Unity.

      The villige level had tons of little touches that contributed to the setting. Itfelt like a real place, full of life and character. Also, the natives weren't generic archetypes speaking perfect english. I loved the himalayan temples and tombs. Another thing that Uncharted 2 did better was the civil war, the games showed the destruction and devastation war can bring to a city. Meanwhile, in Far Cry 4, it barely seems like the country is in conflict, or that it's an actual country. Most of the map is just hills and valleys, with an occasional hut.

      They definitely aren't. They may not be open-world, but the levels still provide big outdoor areas to move around in. Uncharted 2 is no more linear than Tomb Raider 2.
      The more likely reason he didn't mention Uncharted is that he never played it, on account of not owning a PS3.

    Far Cry 2 was hardly a vacation. Almost everyone in that game hates you or sees you as just an average mercenary grunt. And you also have malaria. That's not to say that FC2 is the ultimate superior of course. Constantly respawning outposts and bullet-sponge enemies are what killed most of people's interest in that game. I just like the overall hostility of African environment and the game mechanics itself. Keeps you on your toes.

      FC2 is my personal GOAT. I don't mind the respawning checkpoints, tho admittedly they're flawed in the rate at which they respawn. But yes, the general sense of "everything hates you, up to and including the game itself" is an atmosphere and attitude very few games manage to achieve. And I adore it.

    I love this setting so much more than FC3, but I think by now I am tired of the formula. If I ever wanted to play FC for its formula I'll just run through Blood Dragon and I'll get the experience of both FC3 and FC4, and that's sad.
    You know, I got a theory about Ubisoft games, and please here me out and write back if you can. The joke here is that Ubisoft only knows how to make one game, that you can compress all of their franchises into a single, well written review. Aaaand, maybe that's the point?
    What if whoever or whomever are high enough to make decisions for the direction of all their games, they only have one thing in mind. Make the same type of game but in every setting imaginable. That way there will always be a Ubisoft game for you to buy no matter what setting or even genre you want to play.
    Want to go shooting stuff in the first person on some tropical island? With some collectibles and sidequests and multiplayer/co-op? Far cry 3 for you!
    Want to go shooting stuff in the third person in some cyber-punkish modern city? With some collectibles and sidequests and multiplayer/co-op? Watch Dogs for you!
    Want to go racing stuff across America? Europe? With some collectibles and sidequests and multiplayer/co-op? The Crew!
    Hopefully, see where I'm getting? It's like Ubisoft wants this perfect formula for creating a game and put a finger in every single pie that they can. How can they not break even or make money when they have a game for nearly every desire one might imagine?

      Well not "better" in the sense that it's basically just AC 4.5. But they fixed a lot of small issues, and varied up the missions a lot more, so it's less "follow and eavesdrop" over and over and over and over...... Basically it's like Farcry 4 is to Farcry 3. More of the same, but improved in almost every aspect. If you like AC4, you'll like Rogue.

I mean running this at above 40 fps on ultra WITHOUT frame freezes and sluggish camera movement which I experience constantly on my superclocked GTX 760 on NVIDIA's recommended settings. I get a solid above 40 on average, but it's bittersweet. So far, I can't find a fix other than playing it at the lowest settings which makes me pretty sad lol.

    Skinning/looting animations in Red Dead Redemption were fine, but the game didn't require you to hunt continuously for upgrades (most of them were actually only for aesthetic costume changes) and the best pelts, furs, feathers etc. were pretty difficult to take down, so there was an actual buildup and payoff to the system.

    George, have you ever watched the video describing Farcry 3's Symmetry Theory? Lets be honest, Farcry3's biggest flaw is that the plot and the game mechanics were always fighting with each other, but I think I'm going to advise you to look into what actually happened into the game a little deeper. Alot of the game's plot seems to be more self-aware than anyone bothered to look into, and seeing that you did a video on MGS2, you of all people would be interested in this.

    • @UnBR0k3enAngel
      @UnBR0k3enAngel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Guess what? Undertale's a decent RPG, nothing amazing, but I can appreciate the omnipotent character twist that both Flowy and Sans posses. It was an element that makes any subsequent play-through interesting, so that you know to look for anomalies. How about Skyrim? I played chunks of Oblivion and thought it was a good RPG, but never came around to the time to finish it. Then, Skyrim, its sequel comes along and I try it; Skyrim, without a shadow of a doubt, is the most watered-down RPG I've ever played. It might as well be an entirely different IP, not an Elder Scrolls game. Why is the lock-picking mini-game so stupid?? Why is the game's intro an hour long?! Why are almost none of the side quests interesting to me? These may all seem like bitchy nit-picks but here is my biggest problem with Skyrim: where are the classes??? you know...the biggest reason why anyone would ever want to replay a massive RPG like Skyrim?

    lol love how bored you sound in your voice, it's about as generally boring I find all Ubisoft games in the last few years. Imagine if they actually tried to make their games challenging and have a lot more depth than they do instead of just recreating the same game over and over. Granted I'm glad they at least added a difficulty slider to this game instead of just not having one at all, but the hardest difficulty doesn't fix how simple the game is, how slow the AI is to react and how easy it is to become unkillable.

      I didn't buy FC4 because it feels too much like FC3(gameplay wise). One gaming site used one default picture for each game they review or feature and the picture they used for FC4 shows a group of freedom fighters rushing to battle with animals besides them, presumably that's a shot to promote the game's multiplayer. There's nothing wrong about the picture except for the fact it reminded me so much of Assassin's Creed Unity's own multiplayer/co-op promo pictures.
      Sequels that don't differ much from the previous games is one thing but having extremely similar 'feel' across several different games/franchises is just too much.

    I picked up a copy for PS3 in summer 2016 at a fleamarket, too curious to resist, but only started playing it a few days ago and... I'm having a blast, surprisingly. Yes, the gen 7 version stutters, suffers from its draw distance and pop-ups and has made me die a glitchy death a few times, but I went into it expecting just one thing: more Far Cry 3-style action with a new setting, different NPCs and yet another insane villain. It's what I got and I love it for that. And because I'm very late to this party, the 20 or so hours I've put into it already don't feel stale just yet. But that could also be because most of that time was spent liberating outposts using wild animals instead of progressing in the story (13/32 right now)...

    • @TrueBlueGamer
      @TrueBlueGamer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I think it's highly regarded as cult classic in the medium.
      Far Cry 3 and 4 might look nice and all but apart from the inclusion of the wing suit, they've never appealed to me the same way 2 did, and I guess the reason was mostly because of it's setting, interesting if flawed narrative and unrelenting gameplay.
      All those combine to make Far Cry 2 a more engaging world to play in, not much different from the Stalker series actually.

    And this year of "very iterative sequels" will end its lineup of new games not with this, but with a twisted new "iteration": Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. You could sum it up as "the puppy Super Mario 3D World held, but grown up", and that is just different enough for me to consider it a sure purchase, even more than tried-and-true series' strong new entries, including Smash 4 and Bayonetta 2.
