I think the cracks add a level of character to the piece. It's beautiful, as usual! As for using colors you don't normally use, sometimes the artist has to step away from what they are accustomed to in order to create new and exciting pieces, or to reignite their creative fire.

Excellent work as always, Doug. I love how the resin coat makes the grain pop out and the colors look simply wonderful to behold.
And if anyone notices the cracks and/or asks about them, you can say the cracks lend the piece something called 'character" and leave it at that.
(and you can jump the price up a bit because of the "character" of the piece)
