Socio-economic Marginalization: Vulnerabilities of 'Watals' in Kashmir's Sheikh Colonies (Part 1)

This video essay explores the socio-economic marginalisation facing the Sheikh community residing in informal settlements along the historic Hari Parbat Fort in Srinagar. Despite generations living in these ‘watal’ colonies, residents lack tenure rights and access to basic civic amenities. Scenes depict the densely packed homes, narrow alleys, poor sanitation and lack of utilities in these underprivileged neighbourhoods juxtaposed against the iconic urban heritage site they surround. The commentary highlights the community's struggles with insecure housing and the inability to upgrade living conditions without legal land ownership.
