    You decide!
    I will make this post short and sweet by covering the differences between the two and then talking about whos workflow will benefit from the upgrade. Plain and simple. To know about what the predecessor of the FZ2500 can do press this button and find out
    Spoiler alert. I bought the FZ2500
    I myself chose the FZ2500 for video production reasons. Panasonic themselves said that the FZ2500 was basically an all-in-one GH4. It will, most likely serve as my B-cam but will also come in handy as a high end scouting cam, a vlogging camera (when my muscles are up to selfie stick task) and, as crazy as it may seem, as a Sometimes A-cam.
    What has Panasonic added?
    Here is a quick list of the big advancements. Depending on your workflow and what you do, some might be more important to you than others
    What the FZ2500/2000 now offers that the FZ1000 did not offer
    Touchscreen
    More telephoto reach
    Headphone jack
    Integrated ND filters
    Faster jpeg shooting
    Side lens function buttons
    better tripod mount screw placement
    Better memory card placement
    Dual adjustment rings on the lens
    Higher touchscreen resolution
    Upgradable in-camera log codecs
    Conclusion form an avid FZ1000 fan
    If you are looking for a stills upgrade, you might even be a tad disappointed by this new release, as its predecessor was already state of the art. You are not gaining that much. Some of the stills improvements are post focus capabilities, focus stacking, and a slightly quicker burst rate in JPEG mode. You also get a greater zoom range (From 24-400mm on the FZ1000 to 24-480mm on the FZ2500/2000). But you also lose a couple of things like overall compactness and light weight. Although the FZ1000 was not the lightest or the smallest of cameras, the FZ2500 takes on both girth and weight. These are the symptoms of adding so many amazing video features to this camera. Other advantages of the FZ1000 is that you get fantastic photo and pretty amazing video features for a quickly plummeting price.
    Most of the advantages of upgrading to the FZ2500/2000 involve video capabilities. Like new amazing strides in 1080p bit depth, 4-2-2 8 bit and 10bit output on HDMI for external recorders and unlimited recording time when recording internally. There is now an ND filter with 4 steps 1/4, 1/16 and 1/64 and auto. All huge improvements for anyone working on a video workflow.
    Ergonomic strides are small but cool for both stills and video makers alike. The battery door has been pushed away from the tripod mount screw, memory card access is on the side, and no less than 3 assignable function buttons have been placed on the side of the lens. Now manual rings are dual and assignable.
    What you should chose
    Sometimes the answer to a question is shorter than you think. With this upgrade this is the case.
    With my video workflow, the choice is simple. Upgrade the FZ2500/2000 now! For those in the stills department, I would have to tell you to strongly consider saving some money and opting for the FZ1000

    Hey Jacques - there has been some internet back and forth over whether the US version FZ2500 has a threaded barrel for adding on lens filters. Can you please confirm whether or not this is the case?

    • @JacquesGaines
      @JacquesGaines  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that it has a threaded barrel. A real crappy lens cap that does not grip onto the lens but I will talk about that in my full review soon. If I do not write back, it is because it indeed has a threaded barrel. If I do, it is to confirm that it does not. How does that sound?

    Thanks for the good introduction of the FZ2500 +Jacques Gaines.
    Looking forward to your full review and sample footage..
    Got mine last week, loving it. Upgraded from Sony A5100 aiming to use FZ2000 (that's the model's name in Europe) as my main video device. I'm extremely happy there's really no 29.59 mins limit here in EU, wouldn't believe it until I could do my own test - yes, it's a no limit video recording. Of course, no overheating, worked like a charm.
    Now I'm looking for another Panasonic that films in same formats, to use it as second camera. I believe it'll save me time in editing & color correcting/grading. My main intention is to film interviews for clients, where the talent is filmed with the FZ2000 and the interviewer with the other camera. The latter will be seen in some 10% of the video so I guess I shouldn't be getting another FZ2000, too expensive solution, and I'm also thinking about portability while travelling etc.
    Will look up on the internet but if Jacques or any of the commenters could recommend another Panasonic, it would be appreciated.

    There are other things that a stills photographer might appreciate which you don't mention like 1 stop more of dynamic range, better colour depth and much better AF tracking. These are actually quite good reasons to upgrade from the FZ1000 for stills shooting also.

    Mr. Gaines, if you could please help with a question I can't find the answer to anywhere. I just got a FZ2500 and I am confused by the manual zoom ring on the lens. Every other lens I have had you turn the ring 1/4 to maybe 1/2 to go through the whole zoom range. On this camera you have to turn the ring 360 degrees about three times! The zoom also often starts delayed. As a still photographer I don't like using the zoom switch on the shutter. Can this zoom ring on the lens be adjusted? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    • @JacquesGaines
      @JacquesGaines  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a focus by wire system. Not a big fan of focus by wire. Go to the settings. I believe you can change zoom and focus speed and even direction.

    • @dpedroh
      @dpedroh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for taking the time to respond. this was the critical piece of information I needed. Unfortunately there is no setting to adjust the speed of the zoom ring, only step it. I am sure a slow zoom is fine for video work but will never cut it for the still photography I do. Too bad but I'll have to return it and spring for a full DSLR which I was hoping to not have to do. Thanks again and keep up the good work, I really enjoy the videos.

    is that price before or after taxes? I ask because over here in Britain it costs £1099 including VAT (about $1339).

    • @JacquesGaines

      Canadian dollars before taxes. The Canadian dollar suffered from an almost 75 cent equivalence because of dropping oil prices. My prices are not the greatest reference. We fluctuate way more than Europe.

    A lot of the physical upgrades compared to the FZ1000 are mostly there for convenience. They are useful dont get me wrong but if you look at them and say I dont necessarily need that, you'll probably be fine with the FZ1000 instead of the FZ2500. I'm also reading mixed things about the lens. From what I can tell it uses an internal zooming mechanism. That is useful if you want your camera to be more balanced when its in a rig of some sort and you still want to zoom in and out but the problem is when using it normally, you have the lens protruding out. Correct me if im wrong but it seems like you cant turn this off and have a normal Zooming system. Its not a huge breaking point but it seems like it can be annoying. I think a lot of people can be happy paying almost half the price for the old model compared to this one but the new convenience features can somewhat justify the higher price. Also if you want built in ND Filters or want to record in V-Log you really have no other choice but to get the FZ2500 instead of the FZ1000. Remember thought the Log upgrade will cost you more than just the base camera.

    • @JacquesGaines
      @JacquesGaines  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get your points. I am slowly not liking the zoom popping out as much as I thought. Also, your rig argument makes sense but the focus mechanism still moves inside and will make any gimbal rig go off balance anyway because within that extended tube parts move around. After looking at my stills in low light I (I will do a video on this) I realize the camera is not even a stills upgrade. Video is truly blowing my mind though. Truly a huge step up. Low light is phenomenal

    Salut Jacques et merci pour ce bon tuto. J'ai juste besoin d'une information pour aboutir à la création d'une vidéo full hd ou Uhd directement par mon fz 2000. J'arrive bien à lire la séquence en mode lecture, mais impossible d'avoir la fonction "create vidéo" à la fin du timelapse ? Y a t'il un minimum d'images, j'ai fait un test avec 30 vues. Merci Dans 15 jrs à Montréal en famille.

    • @JacquesGaines
      @JacquesGaines  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Je crois qu'avec 30 images, il se peut que la caméra décide que ce n'est pas assez pour faire une vidéo. Même pour toi c'est n'est pas assez, car 30 prises égale seulement une seconde de timelapse. Ce sera peut-être une bonne idée de fixer un timelapse que dure environ 4 à 10 secondes. Alors 4X30 = 120 prises.

    disagree I don't think most people want a video camera that shoots stills, that's why the rx10iii is the top camera in this market, if Panasonic had given this 600mm lens, better still quality with excellent video and cheaper than the Sony sales would have gone through the roof but not with this, only video people would want this camera so they've lost a good opportunity to beat Sony

      +The Movingicon This is the one segment of the camera market that is severely lacking in options unfortunately which is why the Sony is still ridiculously expensive. sorry if I misunderstood but you Sony hasn't been on the ball, imo it's Panasonic that have missed it 😁

    • @JacquesGaines
      @JacquesGaines  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Extremely disappointing. I have been writing the text for the review and the general conclusion for me is that it is indeed a video camera with a DSLR form factor. Its still capacities are heightened by the gadgetry of 4k photo, post focus, focus stacking etc. But for photo performance, optical quality, and sensor performance it is super disappointing. Diffraction at small apertures is appalling and opened up, the images are mushy. All cameras are only as good as the lens is and this lens is the perfect example of Leica making a mistake in putting its name on it. As excited I was for this camera, I find myself saying "Just bought myself a camcorder that can take stills to get me out of a bind". Stay tuned. It is taking me a while because I am going to lose it in the video. If you saw my first video on this camera I was so excited.
