Waltzing Matilda but you're going over the top at Gallipoli

  • The Battle of Lone Pine (also known as the Battle of Kanlı Sırt) was fought between Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) and Ottoman Empire during the Gallipoli Campaign of the First World War. The fighting was "some of the fiercest" the Australians experienced during the campaign to that point. The ground captured during the battle amounted to a total of about 150 metres across a 300-metre front. Amidst scenes of considerable devastation, the Australian divisional commander, Walker, believed the result "disastrous". As a result of the battle's significance to the Australians, Lone Pine is the site of the annual Australian Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli.

    “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives …You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.” - Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

      Apparently it was called "'The Last Gentlemen’s War'' because a Turkish soldier saw an Australian injured in the middle of all the fighting and pulled out a white flag and both sides stoped shooting within a few seconds, Then the Turkish soldier ran out of the trench, Out of safty and treated the wounds of the Australian soldier. I believe that is why it is called "'The Last Gentlemen’s War'' Because not a single case of that happening on such a scale has even happened since

He spent his life working in the bush and knows so much about Australian history, about indigenous history, and even about the flora and fauna of Australia as well, to this day he never leaves home without his akubra hat. Slim Dusty is his favourite musician. I love Slim because it takes me back to being a little kid, sitting in the passenger seat of grandad's truck while we passed through little towns in central Victoria and up in the Mallee, while he told me stories about all the places we passed while we listened to Slim Dusty tape cassettes lol.

    I’m learning about the ANZACs currently and they were just bad ass. British officers present exclaimed at their ferocity. One said that their rifles did not have charged magazines in them so they rushed the ottomans with cold steel like chads. Gallipoli is so remembered in Australia because it birthed the ‘ANZAC legend.’ 7 Victoria crosses were given out at the battle of lone pine alone.

Australia also pulled off one of the greatest retreats ever, with the drip rifle trick. Pull your head in, and grow up. I will never get why you Turks are so nationalistic. Turkey is now closely related with Australia and welcomes hundreds of people over to Gallipoli every year to celebrate ANZAC day.

      It honestly wasn't the worst plan ever to start. It was supposed to be a purely naval operation, leveraging a bunch of old pre-dreadnaughts that were basically useless for anything other than shore bombardment or bullying destroyers. The idea was to blast the Ottoman forts into submission-maybe land some Royal Marines to knock off a particularly stubborn gun or two-roll up to Istanbul, and have the Ottoman capital under the guns of the most powerful fleet that had ever put to sea. Had everything gone like it had been in Churchill's head, the assault could have worked. The piling on of real-world factors like the minefields-then the inability to clear the minefields because the sweepers were being sunk by the coastal guns the capital ships couldn't hit because of the minefields-created the need for ground troops, but no sufficient force existed just in case, meaning one had to be scrounged up. This caused the Entente to lose surprise and gave the Turks several weeks to dig in, causing the disaster we still criticize Churchill for today, and rightly so I feel. For as important an operation as he felt this was, one would think he'd have earmarked some shock troops to have around just in case they had to actually _take_ the city, or some other edge case (like invading Turkey, I guess).

    “Heroes who shed their blood on the lands of this country! Here you are in the soil of a friendly homeland. Sleep in peace and tranquility. You, side by side with the Mehmetçik, are sheep and goats. The mothers who sent their sons from far away land! Soothe your tears. Your children are in our bosom. They are at peace and will sleep peacefully. After they gave their lives on this land, they became our children now.” Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Çanakkale geçilmez!!!!!!!

      @@KaiserClone El Alamein was one of the most crucial battles for New Zealanders ever. In fact, the command for the battle was headed by New Zealander General Freyberg and the Maori Battalions went down in history forever after their ferocious fighting. I like the idea of El Alamein to be honest.

    “Let them come boys, 'till they show above the scrub; I’ll give the word, then five rounds rapid. Yell like hell and into them with the bayonet.” - Col Arthur Bauchop, Otago Mounted Rifles.

    • @speckledjim5402
      @speckledjim5402 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “The Colonel patrolled the hill top all night encouraging the men and getting us to cheer like dervishes at intervals. We made enough noise for a hundred men.”
      As dawn broke on 7 August, with the position still secure, Bauchop led his men in a final cheer:
      He only got as far as ‘Hip, Hip’, when there was a flash from a patch of scrub sixty or seventy yards away on a little spur on the left front. The Colonel staggered and fell. Several of us picked him up and carried him to a little depression near the summit. When asked by the Otago officer if he was hard hit, he answered, 'Yes, I'm done, but don't worry about me, carry on'.
      Bauchop was mortally wounded. The commander of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Major-General Sir Alexander Godley spoke to him shortly after he had been shot and later wrote "Though he was hardly conscious all he said was 'I hope we did what you wanted' and 'it was glorious while it lasted' ".
      Bauchop died on a hospital ship three days later. His men were devastated. “We get more men and good men, but can we get as good a Colonel again?” wrote one.

    Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

    I personally think videos from older conflicts could possibly be cool. For example, "Ashokan Farewell", "John Brown's Body", "Battle Hymn of the Republic" or "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" but you're marching across Miller's Cornfield towards General Lee's troops, would be cool. However, I understand that you get many requests for each video, and understand that many of these requests would make better videos. Nonetheless, have a good day and thank you for the video.
