I’m Dutch, so of course I hoped the Netherlands would win. But Navas that match was something else. Costa Rica deserved to reach the semi’s just because of him.
The early part of this video was nicer without the unnecessary background music. Costa Rica topping Group D over three former champions and making the last eight in 2014 World Cup is surely one of the biggest stories from that tournament. A real underdog story.

If my memory is correct I believe the Mexico squad had a friendly in the Netherlands a few months after the World Cup and if my memory is correct I believe Mexico won that game as a visitor. For me the best success Costa Rica made in 2014 was the fact they ended 1st in group stage against giants Italy, England and Uruguay. Its like you put Lion, Tiger and Leopard in the same cage with house cat, and in the end cat kills all of them 😂
Krul had only saved 2 of his previous 20 penalties, whereas Vorm had saved 3 of 11, so he was more of a penalty specialist than Krul, so seems a bizarre decision to bring Krul on. Although Krul was left handed and as 3 Costa Rica players were left footed, statistically they were more likely to kick to Krul's stronger side (although only 1 ended up taking a kick anyway). van Gaal was playing mind games with Costa Rica and won.
