- The Teradek RT lens control system is awesome, but the advertising & manuals leave a lot of gaps and lead to a lot of effort to get questions answered when I was looking to buy it. Hope this overview and future videos help if you're about to use/buy the RT system.
Any ideas or questions to cover in future videos leave them in the comments! :)

Finally! an actual review of the damn thing. Teradek is doing very little to sell me on this thing even though im fairly interested. They dont give any updates on firmware/ software fixes. The facebook RT group mostly shares bugs and glitches that frankly a device this expensive shouldnt have.
Totally agree, their advertising & instructions on it are woeful so I felt like doing it Myself ð
You're preaching to the choir on the bugs vs price... It's ridiculous. But there's features it has that no other system does so that's where we grit our teeth and wait for it to improve ðŦĪ Think of it like a RED DSMC2 - once we understood the quirks of those cameras, it was golden!
Things shuffled internally at Teradek so there's been a positive change in the last few months ððŧ
Great to here that the MDR.S works also with the TOF.1
Very helpful video for pullers looking to buy like myself, thanks Dan!
Awesome to hear Oliver! Happy to help ð
Out here doing the Lordâs work. Been trying to find an overview video for like a week now. Havenât really found anything useful until now!
Dude thank youuuuð
That was the same struggle I had so I completely empathise. So glad to help bro!! ð More videos very soon ððŧ
I love the way you mounted you focus rig, with the back handle and the pin for the belt! Smart work!
Aw thank you! ð
This was very helpful, thank you! ð
You're welcome ð
Iâve literally wanted something like this for so long. I already own the system but I would love to see you show a legit comparison between the tof1 vs the focus bug. Or id even take you talking more about the tof1. Iâm so back and forth on buying the tof1, I have the cinetape interface cable and have used it when working on a 35mm job and it was decent. I just want to see what is better or worse with the tof1. I priced out a focus bug cable too and itâs like 240 US dollars. Almost a quarter of the tof1 when on sale
So glad to have helped! ð
Literally right this minute I'm at a rental house with the Cine RT Focusbug and will be hiring it in a few weeks to do a video on it's integration with the Teradek RT. So I'll ensure to do a separate comparison with the TOF.1 for You ð
In the meantime here's my thoughts:
Previously I've only used the Focusbug on the ARRI Hi-5, and can say it is far more advanced! ð Great example is it can penetrate fog/haze, windows, and has a tonne more settings to tune it to your needs. The TOF.1 only has the sensor offset...and that's it. Not even a sensitivity setting like the ARRI UDM-1.
Another difference of the two is having to advocate to Productions to pay more for the Focusbug - eg. a TVC might not budget for it when they're already getting a Wireless Follow Focus.
The TOF.1 is great if you're new to using rangefinders, just need a basic reference of an actor's pacing as they approach, or simply can't yet afford the huge cost of a Focusbug system because the TOF.1 is so cheap. But if you can afford the cost of the Focusbug, know you'll get it onboard jobs, and that it's detailed settings would make a difference to your work then get it! âš
Worth noting that the Focusbug's integration is still greater on the ARRI WCU-4/Hi5 than on the Teradek RT.
@@cameramandan_ I canât wait to see this! I have been toying with the idea of making my own video because I knew there had to have been a bunch of people out there wanting the same thing. When you were using the focus bug were you using it with the actual bug or just as a rangefinder? Also with the smaller mdr can you still use a tof1? And with the smaller one you canât use the focus bug right? Do you have any other parts of your kit that have been really useful or helpful? I have 2 of the (now not for sale motors) and the mdrx.
Overall ive been pretty happy with my kit. Itâs made its money back no problem and I love the lens mapping + on monitor readout. But Iâve definitely had some bugs with it. Sometimes with the Sony Venice the runstop just doesnât work. Sometimes when itâs underpowered when using movi it bugs out. Sometimes the wireless range just absolutely goes to hell and it just quits. Usually a reboot and change of handset batts works but there are some evil forces at work for no particular reason at times.
I canât wait for move in depth videos! Iâm also interested to see what teradek releases soon for this line because one of their latest insta posts teased that thereâs way more to comeâĶ hopefully some more goodies
@@cameramandan_also, do you know a Steadicam op out there named Edward Bellamy? Thatâs my good friend who I met back here in the states a few years ago!
When using the Focusbug I only had the Rangefinder, but the bug is insanely cool too! Just have to remember to get it back from the talent before they drive home haha
Bugger on those issues you've had, I've heard various basic bugs with the Hi5 despite it's new status. Makes me relieved that it's not just Teradek that makes simple mistakes with firmware.
Oooh yes the CTRL.5 handunit - Cinegear is where it will properly be on show, but won't be on sale for a while. What I've been shown of it is extremely exciting :D
Oh whoops sorry forgot to reply to Teradek RT questions haha
- the MDR.S (smaller one), yes the TOF.1 is compatible it just needs to daisychain into a motor. So you need a MOTR.X or MOTR.S.
- correct cannot use the Focusbug on the MDR.S. You need the IN 1 or 2 port of the MDR.X
Other helpful things in my RT kit:
- I mentioned in video the 3rd party quick-swap motor screws on my MOTR.X and Mk3.1. They've saved so much time and fiddling with the tiny screws. Unfortunately just a month or so ago the maker did their last batch :(
- I 3D printed an extension to my Robocup to hold my Focus Rings that allows them to easily click in/out with a small amount of resistance. So much better than having them on a zip tie and means they're always easily accessible
- for my TOF.1 I have three mounting brackets: on the top 15mm rods so it peaks over a mattebox, a small magic arm to raise it up above a Top Chop, and a Top Handle mount so that it's high and only ever tilts. Really has helped adapt my build so I'm not in the way of the DOP's monitor, the EVF clamp, or get stitched by the Top Chop coming up
- Hardwire cable has helped when filming at a Fuel Station and wireless signals are deemed a safety hazard if we're unable to turn the pumps off. Also has helped when the set is overloaded with wireless signals
- Quick release pin on my CTRL.3 so I don't have the Handunit swing around on a lanyard
You're giving Me too many great ideas for future videos haha
Danâs my hero!
Oh stop it ðĪ
I just got the terradek rt mk 3.1 theres not much tutorials and realizing if I regret getting an older fiz, if you ever got some time would love ask some questions on it and thoughts and tips you have for it! Or anything you could share :)
Happy to chat mate! Easiest way to reach Me is on Instagram: @cameramandan_
I've still got my Mk3.1 and it's damn reliable and super solid.
When I have to jump between two cameras, I have all my motors across both - so having a spare Mk3.1 has saved Me a lot of hassle.
The limitation of the Mk3.1 is it cannot be daisychained further - so either I had my Mk3.1 at the end of a daisychain, or I had the MDR.X to enable multiple motor cables and/or the TOF.1.
Really it depends on what your requirements are for a follow focus based on the types of jobs you do. If you only need one axis like the CTRL.1, then you're fine! ððŧ
ððð
Is it worth to waitting for the motor.s Max?
Personally I don't think so. I was really underwhelmed by the MOTR.S, and the specs on the Max are barely any better and still not as strong as the MOTR.X. So I don't really understand the selling point if it can't even match the torque of the X ðĪ
@@cameramandan_ Thanks, actually I am considering to buy the teradek RT lens control system, but I don't know what different between old motr.X and motr.S, there is very less review on youtube of teradek. One more question, except the ports, MDR.X and MDR.S can do the same function?
That's exciting!!
I'll do more depth on the motors in a future video then, but for now here's the Torque capabilities to show the main difference in my mind:
Mk3.1 - 2.2 nm (Peak)
MOTR.X - 3 Nm (Peak), 2 Nm Continuous
MOTR.S - 0.95 nm (Peak), 0.3 nm (continuous)
MOTR.S Max - 1.2 nm (Max), 0.8 nm (Continuous)
The MOTR.S is newer so is more robust, lighter and the rod clamp far stronger. Natural improvements after learning from their first daisy-chainable motor MOTR.X.
Besides the torque above, their ports are pointing up (S) and down (X), and they have different gear mounts (X - 3 screws, S - 1 screw) so the latter is a faster switch.
The MOTR.S is designed for modern day builds that are lightweight, adaptable (cables pointing up reduces inconvenience on the Operator), and for lenses that are easy to turn.
MDR.X vs MDR.S - absolutely the same function (besides features for Input 1/2 such as hardwire), the S is the newer/smaller version (I'd highly recommend it! It's been so damn good!)
@@cameramandan_ So greatïžthanks a lotïžLooking forward to your next video.ððŧ
