Going 5-6 wide into turn 1 is something that can be done at a place like Pocono but not when you're all trying to go into a tight 90° right hander designed for open wheel cars, hell, we saw this happen earlier this year on the restarts at COTA

Chase Elliott probably had nothing for Reddick - but his drive to 2nd after highly questionable pit calls and the brake bias not working (contributed to his spin in Stage 1) was the most impressive of the day. Too bad he got wiped out in one of the crazy late restarts.

Chastain was running 5th when he decided to run straight into the access road, and came out battling Reddick for the lead. It was an obvious advantage, and he clearly never even tried to take that first turn.
People are making excuses like how the rules allowed him to do that, but everyone knows the access road is only meant to be used as a runoff if you miss the turn. You are supposed to come to a complete stop before continuing, and he never did, which is how he made up 4 spots and took the lead.
He had no business inserting himself into that situation and possibly ruining the outcome for the leaders.
It's lucky he didn't end up taking Reddick out altogether.

    • @5tig_
      @5tig_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

If you take the access road you don't have to stop. You should not be able to gain an advantage by taking an access road. Nascar need to look at that next year and add something to take the speed away from the car before they come back on track

The access road is intended to be neutral - no advantage. If anything a disadvantage since it is so dirty. NASCAR were afraid of disqualifying yet another win from a driver. The rule should be very clear. True, it would have helped Chastains case if he had made an ever so slight turn in to T1, then continue to bail out down the escape road.

Jim, I know it's hard to see your beloved Cup series is losing interest and fans by the truckload to open wheel racing, but frankly, NASCAR only moved to the forefront in the US as a result of the rift between CART and IRL and people are moving on from the anarchy of Nascar to enjoy a higher level of performance and skill evident in both indycar and F1. I'm not saying people don't enjoy Nascar for its carnage and driver outbursts, but it's definitely lost touch. I've been watching racing for more than half a century, both live and on TV, and I thought this was one of the most entertaining races of this season. "Road" races are - my opinion - a lot more fun to watch than ovals, and this one gave a lot of drivers an opportunity to show they're slow learners. Every restart saw the same crowd of 5-wide trying to get through a turn designed for, at most, 2-wide. It was like watching bumper cars at the state fair, with a lot of drivers basically taking themselves out of the race.

I too just so happened to see Jeff Gordon when my first and only NASCAR race. being from the St Louis area obviously we were cheering for Rusty Wallace and Kenny Schrader I can't remember if Kenny was in there or not. but everybody booed Rusty whenever he took the lead. anyway it was nuts the amount of people there, I've never seen that many people before or since!
anyway I totally agree with your idea for the brickyard weekend double header Saturday on the road course Sunday on the oval. that would be awesome. I had a fantasy that somehow St Louis would put together a street race and we could do something similar go over to the oval and Madison the next day or the night before. obviously that would be next to impossible. Absolutely love your idea for the future NASCAR weekends at IMS. They need to do something completely different and out of the box in order to be unique. The "Brickyard" race just doesn't have the same prestige that it did when they started going there in the 90's. And the whole issue with Ross Chastain seems laughable to me. As you said, he never even attempted to make that corner. That escape route is meant a safety valve if you're approaching turn 1 and there's a wreck in front of you and you have no other option. He has three peddles, a gear shifter, and a steering wheel just like everyone else. When he found himself out of position heading into that turn he could have forced the issue and attempted to make it four wide into the turn, or seeing that he wasn't going to make it, he could have backed off and taken the best result possible. Besides that, the drivers were told before the race that if they took the escape road they would be required to do a stop an go on the other side of the track. The 30 second penalty was 100% justified.

I think on turns at road courses they should think about more than one way to get around the corner that the drivers could choose to get rid of 5 into 1 racing lines. The tracks could these access roads for safety during some races and spice them up for others. 5 into 1 traffic is as fast and is like being in LA rush hour. I`ve seen some racing where alternate routes can be timed to be somewhat comparable and keep the racing action interesting.

PS: The NASCAR championship round should be 4 races. I will accept the playoffs if they just lengthen the Championship. Motorsports don't work like that, and a singular championship race cheapens the championship. If it was results of the final four races, they would still be hella close in points, but random stuff happening in one race would play less of a factor. I'm just including this in case you want to comment on NASCAR's method of crowning a champ.

In my opinion, if the access road ends up being a temporary shortcut because cars are piling into turn one and the first through 4th cars like bowling pins, and results in a positive gain for a car taking it due to circumstantial pile up in turn one, then you cant call it cheating. Tats on Nascar to have said "You must stop and go" or force a slower cut through". If you look at the replay he had slowed for the corner, then there were 2 choices, get piled into by the field attempting to turn into them, or just go straight. He did actually yield to Reddick. It was almost inevitable that a driver would have chosen the option given the intolerably caveman like turn one pile ins. Leave it no NASCAR to deviate from the "must stop" rule and accidently make a shortcut.

It's not the tracks fault for the wrecks, it's the drivers driving over their heads. Taking that over-aggressive driving style like at the ovals where they can get away with it most cases and trying to apply it to a road course. It's just not going to work out.
I don't care what anybody says, but I'd take 10 more road courses over getting the oval back at the Brickyard. I love the Chicago street course idea, not happy Road America is the one that lost a date but I like the idea nonetheless. These new cars are literally designed to produce better road course racing and I think it's proved that it does.
People were saying for years prior to switching to the road course at Indy that something needed to be done to reinvigorate the Nascar race at Indy and they did and now everybody wants to go back to the old thing that failed like it'll somehow be better now. Sure, all the new gimmicks and stage racing will produce the artificial drama that the younger audience craves but the racing itself will stink like it always has at the Brickyard 400. Fans weren't showing up anymore, viewership was down so they got rid of it. Good riddance.
But now we've got #bringbacktheoval and that's the new popular opinion. Yeah, bring back more of that boring racing most people complained about just 5 years ago when we had it but it'll magically be better now apparently. That'll fix everything, right? It never does. It's a knee-jerk reaction from a fanbase that has no true clue what they actually want and they'll complain no matter what anyway.
This is only the 2nd time these drivers raced here, the Roval was pretty sketchy too those first couple of years and all those wrecks going into turn 1. They'll be adjustments going forward that these teams will do next time that will reduce the wheel hopping issues and braking we saw which will naturally result in less wrecks. If you can look past those wrecks, the racing itself was pretty good. Same thing that happened with the Roval. Those first few years were wreckfests and people were saying they had to go back to the oval and the Roval wasn't a 'real' road course and all that nonsense to now where the Roval is pretty much accepted and produces pretty good road course racing which will be even further improved with the new car.
Regardless, the point here is that not every race is going to be exactly what you want it to be and to have those expectations is arrogantly unrealistic. But there's enough diversity on the schedule now that everybody should be happy with at least a few races every year. I like the road courses and short tracks even though the short tracks are greatly suffering due to the new car, I still like them. At least more than generic cookie-cutter 1.5 mile tracks and superspeedways that everybody else seems to love. What's the next race? Michigan? Not going to miss anything skipping that one, bring on Watkins Glen. #moreroadcourses
