    You have a good battery. That starter sounds amazing. Poor old girl wants to run so bad. She'll take you where you want to go . Tune her up and you won't have any trouble.

      She usually starts with a single pump and about 3 seconds of cranking. This is out of the ordinary. She runs like a new car most of the time, and now she is back to her old self!

    you definitely had it flooded. where you were messing up is when you let off the accelerator when it began to fire. in a flooded state you have to keep the pedal ALL THE WAY to the floor until it fully catches, then gradually let up on the pedal. it's in the owners manual.

      I did that multiple times. All the way to the floor letting up slowly. The problem was the choke pulloff being frozen and letting in no air combined with too much pumping. Ive dealt with a lot of carburetors and im usually good at figuring out the finickyness of getting them started.

    Positive or negative, i love reading all the comments. The problem was the choke not opening at all. The engine needed some air to run. I held the pedal down, and the flooding wouldn't clear out without air. Thank you for watching, and thank you for the knowledge.

      Yes that’s when a Ford sounded like a Ford! As a kid I remember intervening when our neighbor flooded their Colony Park or Country Squire. They listened to me though! And those carpet insert floor mats were indestructible. Love the seventies FoMoCo products ❤

    So many of this generation have caught on fire from that fuel hose at the carb.! Also I think you pumped the gas a little too much. When you think it might be flooded with fuel, hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank the engine. That should clear out the flooded fuel (give it more air) and that usually works for me! Love your car!

      Thank you. I tried that many times. The choke was frozen completely shut from the weather. So the engine didn't get any air no matter what I did. I should've showed my foot. I held it down many times. Thats how it nearly started a few times near the end of the video. Thank you for watching!

      @@neilmurphy845 It doesn't happen often. First time its happened with this car. It was below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the car had been sitting a month. Those two combined caused the trouble. This is the first time this car hasn't started instantly. Its very reliable.

      Fuel was empty abd filling up as you are cranking and now choke is getting stuck.stop the choke from freezing carb clean. Starter fluid gets it started.

    One of the first things I learned is not to pump the accelerator press it to the floor and release it to set the choke then turn the key so you don’t flood the engine. First thing he did was pumped the accelerator pedal.

      I always start it that way unless it wont start. That is the proper way from the factory and how it should be done!

      @@classicgarage9548 You are spot on! I still have two carbureted cars and cold start them with 1 pump, then crank w/o touching the pedal so as to not prematurely disengage the fast idle. If the bowl is dry from sitting, after about 10 seconds of cranking, I'll pump 2-3 more times, then crank again w/o touching the pedal. Once the engine starts, I let it run on the fast idle as needed to warm up. Years ago this concept eluded so many!!

      It was built by ford to show off the new model that year and then given to an employee in 1979. I bought it from him. Thats how it has the rare options.

      I had a 86 Pontiac Parisienne and the radio tape looks almost like it I actually gutted the goodies on the car before I got rid of it and still have the locking key tool for the hubcap bolts somewhere

    As a 70s kid, I remember cold starts could be a real issue. Sub-zero temps meant all the hoods would be open. Those carbs were finicky!
    EFI saved us a lot of problems and quite a few starters 😂

    Definitely flooded. I had 77 Ford LTD II & I would it give it 2 pumps and it start right up & I would also put a bottle of dry gas in it during the winter months so the fuel lines wouldn't freeze 🥶

    The cool guys with their exhaust done loud, “I got this cold start coming up.” Other videos, has snow on the car,”Here goes a cold start.” Everyone else, “this is really a cold start. Look at the temperature, it’s -xybrz degrees out here. Let’s get this beast started.” One out of a thousand, a guy wearing short sleeves, maybe even shorts. The snow doesn’t look fluffy, and he states that he is from way up north, and the temperature is cold enough that they have to set the vehicle on fire, and preform mechanical surgery, while they cover the engine up with thermal and electric blankets, to get it to start. It’s so cold that the video makes you start to shiver while watching, and you are in a way warmer climate Got to love everyone doing these cold starts. He says “well, we are going to get you that cold start. This always starts for me.” Twenty minutes later. Finally turning over at a decent speed. Twenty minutes later, finally beginning to fire, and cuts off, repeat, and then it starts and the rpms gently climb as the oil changes from a playdoe viscosity, to a old, old school bubble gum viscosity, then to a maple syrup outside in the dead of winter, viscosity. And, “it always starts for me.”. Most of the time it’s a old Ford.

    I've got one of these and it's copper bronze looking color. Been in family since mid 80s. Anyway try not to pump the car so much and maybe even squirt a small small quantity down the barrel of the carburetor of gasoline. Get a car something to hit on before it even cranks. Adjusting the choke my putting something in there prop it open is a good thing yes. But once it floods just hold it down then when it hits let out slowly but quick enough you don't have too many RPMs and after a couple of times that they should run. Everybody has their own thoughts on this. We're fuel injection we're just a little spoiled

      My old 1990 Vicky does not like the cold but, more than 2 pumps and she will do what his was doing, 2pumps not 3. ✅

    When I start my '72 LTD 351 2 bbl., I turn the key on, pump the accelerator once to set the choke, hold the accelerator half way down, and turn the key. If the car doesn't start within 30 seconds, I repeat the process, and continue to do so until it starts. I had several Ford V8's from the 70's and I believe this is the process described in the owner's manual.

    There is no for sure way to start a carbureted engine, they're all different. On some you had to floor it then crank, others you had to give it a few pumps. When I was a teen just starting to drive I learned this the hard way. My Dad's Ford truck you pumped it a couple of times then cranked it, would usually start like that. My Mom's Buick would never start like that. You had to crank it first for a couple of seconds then pump it 3 times, exactly 3 times, and it would fire right up.

    Put a inline filter in the gas line close to the carb and use a electric choke. That would fire up without a issue

    I have one of these in a 1974 vintage. Mine starts every time, within 10 seconds, because of a simple modification I made. I removed the linkage between the throttle and the choke, and then ran a manual choke line to the dash where it is mounted.
    Pull the choke all the way out, push the throttle clear to the floor and hold it, then start the car. Let off of the throttle halfway to three quarters until oil pressure is built, while setting the choke to one half. Once the engine has ran for approximately 30 seconds, fully release the choke while easing up on the throttle to make sure the engine doesn't stall. Sit with the car for about 5 minutes before leaving to be sure it doesn't stall, or that the carb doesn't ice up. Let the vehicle warm up to at least 160F (if you have a 180F thermostat) before driving the car. This will let the carburetor get up to operating temperature, and the oil to flow more freely.
    I put a 300 straight 6 into mine. It was a LOT easier to start with that single barrel Carter YF than any quadrajet or Edelbrock, especially in the negative temperatures.

      I put a mid-'70s 300 in my '85 F-150 to replace the failed original. It had a Carter 1-BBL and points-type distributor. My first winter with this engine, I discovered keeping the EGR working properly is the key to preventing icing up, since it directs some hot exhaust into the intake just below the carb. Older versions actually had a spacer which coolant ran through to prevent icing, which I could've fitted, however cleaning my EGR valve did the trick.

      @@cj6017 Mine has a small damper inside of the manifold that closes when the exhaust in cold. It helps to warm up the intake quickly. If the temps get too bad, I'll probably throw some tin foil over the intake to direct incoming air through the manifolds.

    They make a magnetic oil pan heater I recommend, and always run non-synthetic oil even though it's harder to find. Lightweight in the winter and 50 weight in the summer. They also make a coolant heater you can put in line in the radiator hose. Those two things in that car would be a happy camper with an extension cord run outside to it

      You are wrong, just use the correct oil for your car for winter use, it doesn’t matter if it’s synthetic or conventional. Synthetic oil is better.

      Duralast gold. Its brand new. It did have a really good interstate battery that was over 10 years old, but i took it out to put in another car.

    Hey bud, invest in a heat gun from harbor freight. It’ll come in handy for warming various parts of the car that don’t like getting cold and will make cold start’s easier on the ol girl

      A mix. I got it from the original owner. He worked at Ford. It was built to show off the new model, hence the rare options. I take really meticulous care of my cars. Ive driven many old cars and this one has been the best and most dependable by far.

    Hello soon I will post a video you will love as you own a Lincoln and a Ford same as I own a pair of these among my other dozen big cars I own. I'm performing what's called a bumper tuck on one of these where you move that front bumper in 4 in and the rear bumper in 6 in on my 1976 Ford ltd. On the Lincoln Continental I move the bumpers in an inch and a half and they look a lot better but this is called a full bumper tuck where you can actually delete that plastic. Once it's complete I'll get the video posted. With these bumpers tucked inward they weigh so much with the handling will be greatly improved and with today's traffic there's no need for them to stick out like a shelf you can sit on. It's quite a bit of work and requires the assistant of a bulldozer to collapse the mounts. But once completed the nose is shorter and thinner and you never have to worry about those plastic fillers again.

    When one of my carburetor cars acts like that I know that fuel pumps going out there's a hole in one of the lines so I change all that stuff out with ethanol resistant rubber lines and new fuel pump and then I never put ethanol gas in that car again and I don't have any problems after that. I'll spend the extra 30 or 80 cents per gallon for the non-ethanol gas. Change out the brake fluid to dot 4. A d annually suck out the reservoir and replace with clean brake fluid. And don't have 5o bl3ed the brakes just doing that is good enough.also spray lube on the wire and spring of the hood ornament and hood hinges keeps those moving smoothly.

    Also are you putting unleaded regular in that if you were running premium it would probably start a little quicker those engines are meant to run on high-octane I mean they can run fine on regular but not as good as premium fuel

    Is your foot down to the floor while you are starting it? When I used to flood those old cars, I would have to hold my foot down and release the key….I wouldn’t let up on the gas until it kept running….

    The accelerator pump in your carburetor is probably dried out therefore when you pump it there is hardly any gas being sprayed into the carburetor also proper choke adjustment definitely helps had a 78 marquis with a 460 it was slow going in the cold but much faster than this

    Friend don't you have a garage to keep that in. Nuthin ain't gonna start when it's 0 Farenheit outside. Put it in a garage and cover the hood with a blanket. Remove the blanket before starting, but it would b much easier 2 start. Damn. Those old wagons were very very good and very very reliable. But 0 degrees? Ain't nuthin gonna go without some help.

    All that cranking and near zero oil flow is not good for the engine. You should install a block heater and oil heater, this helps hugely. Zero degrees fahrenheit isn't that cold up in Canada. Thats only minus 18 Celsius and we BBQ and have beers in this kind of weather. You may catch us runnimg aroud in shorts and a heavy hoodie.👍🍻 that wagon looks good.

    One of the issues you are having is that those multiple pumps on the gas means you are flooding it. Put your foot to the floor and hold it. That stops the gas fkow to the carb. That beautiful wagon is either a 400 or a 460. I've had 2 351Ms in 78 Ford Thunderbirds. At -30 and ecen colder my old Ford cars always started first turn of the key. Even the 76 Thunderbird with the 460 that had been sitting for 2 years started on the first tutn if the key. I can tell by the sound when it catches that the choke is miles out of adjustment. I'm betting the idle mixture is all messed up too. Fixing the choke takes no more than a couple of minutes. It is painful to hear that engine struggling like that. Be careful because you likely have gas in the sump. You have almost certainly washed any oil off the cylinder walls.

      Did you watch the whole video? The part where it showed the choke frozen shut? Or the part explaining that isnt usually how to start it? Engine cant run without air. Aka the choke never opening. Yes I know how to clear flooding. Doesn't work if there is no air.

      I actually hated Chevy because this was every single weekend calling for a tow truck or stranded at home or side of the road I dared everyone to try Ford instead if we got stranded nothing changed and we instead had the most reliable vehicles in the 90s decade anyone could have hoped for

      @@truckerkevthepaidtourist then don't you think he should have stuck something in the carburetor to hold the choke open I'm not saying nothing bad man but it just kind of Earth me when he was doing that I'm old school man I've been building these damn old cars for years I'm a machine shop man and high performance engine builder but just sometimes I forget it all these peoples used to these all the new LS stuff like that no carburetor just hit the key and she's running

      @@darrionchild5439 I don't know if he knows about the old screwdriver pen ruler stick something to shove down the choke to keep open.
      I'm sure he'll learn though.
      a good thing back in the day if we didn't have a screwdriver in car and flooded one. Always had pens just stick a bic pen right on in there it did the trick to.

      @@truckerkevthepaidtourist yeah I heard that man boy old school man to me I'll tell you growing up I had the old classic cars man I was on Belle Isle one-time come across the bridge we were drinking some wine and you know the the fan belt I let old school Chevy was alternator crankshaft and water pump that's it so I went to the gas station bought a pair of pantyhose tie them around the water pump crankshaft and alternator taped it up I drove for three days like that man stuck with simple back then when the fuel pump went out didn't have to drop the tank to change it it was right there on the side of the block you carry coil and a module for under the distributor cap and you can travel the world

    Every time I'm almost starts he shuts the key of push the gas down it almost started like four or five times if you would have just kept the key down and pushed the gas a little bit it would have started

      Engine needs air to run. Did you watch the entire video? It explains how something was wrong/what was wrong and why it wasnt starting. It wouldnt run because the carburetor butterfly was iced shut. This is also explained in numerous other comments. Look at any of the other videos of this car. Never have trouble starting it. I use the factory technique and it works fine until something goes wrong.
