Village of the Damned is one of the later efforts from John Carpenter that has somewhat disappeared into obscurity. Sometimes that leads to finding a hidden gem. This is not one of those times.

And there is no difference whatsoever between kal and Clark. An intern on his first day at the Daily Planet would instantly notice that Clark Kent is Superman 🤣🤣
Yes in reality nobody would be fooled by a guy just wearing glasses but at least Reeves plays them as so completely different that you could believe people would be fooled.

In the late '80's Carpenter signed a four-picture deal with ALIVE Films. The first two were Prince of Darkness and They Live (both distributed by Universal). Now, how I understand it, something fell apart between JC and ALIVE, and they went to court for years. Finally, a compromise was made that JC only had to direct one more film for them instead of two. Village of the Damned (also by Universal) was that film. It was a contractual obligation for JC.

It's a simple story, with pretty simple effects, and I don't really hate that considering how many films are pretty try-hard today. I think the adults actually sell it pretty hard. It's the opposite of The It mini series, where the kids sell it and the adults feel off. I don't know, I don't hate it. I'm not rushing my friends to go out and watch it right now so we can talk about it, but I enjoy watching it by myself every now and again.

You know that is true about how you need to take the evil child in these evil child movies, and actually have times they seem normal. Take the 1970s version of The Omen for example. Yeah, Damien is evil, the audience knows from the beginning that Damien is evil, but he still has moments where he seems like an innocent kid so much so, you can understand why Gregory Peck could think that maybe they're wrong. That's the key to doing it, still have moments of doubt in them by the way the kid or in this case kids act. Anyways, sorry that you're now at the lower points of Carpenter's career. But getting there though. Been an interesting ride. Thank you, Cody.

I didn't really like this movie for the longest time, but it slowly grew on me. I did expect more out of JC and thought his reimaging would bring more to the table. After all, the last remake we got from him was The Thing. JC coming in late with someone else's vision does explain quite a bit, but on it's own its a decent film. imo. Sort of representative of Carpenters mid to late 90's work, which I'd describe as okay to middling. Wish he'd come back for one more go at it, but I think JC is happy watching basketball, playing video games and seeing lesser directors fuck up his work

Haha, I love this movie, but agree with a lot of your points. It seems to take a campy approach while trying to tackle serious issues such as postnatal depression, and the look of the kids was badly miscalculated. But Reeve is great, and I think Linda Kozlowski is as well. And the scene with the mother putting her arm in the boiling water...makes my gut churn! There was a recent mini-series based on the book, which I need to check out.

Cody, do you have a day for when your John Carpenter ranking planned? I’ve been watching through his filmography over the last few months to participate in that ranking. I just want to know when you plan on dropping that video so I can have a deadline to finish up my watch through.

I used to watch this movie all the time as a child back when I used to live in Mexico. They would play it on tv all the time in Spanish and it would creep me out every time. For some reason I don't have it labeled as a "bad movie" but again I have not watched it since 2001.. 😅

You think you’ll review Body Bags in your John Carpenter review series? Body Bags is an anthology movie with three stories. John Carpenter directed the first two and Tobe Hooper directed the third. Carpenter even stars in the movie as a crypt keeper-like character. I just seen it for the first time a couple days ago and loved it.

But they definitely have some cool stuff like the posters stickers horror merch for great prices! I bought a ghost face purse and used it for many horror cons and other times it’s still looking and working great!

Apparently, Cody I have done research on this film, which I enjoyed but agree with you that it isn't really special. However, from what I heard from actor Peter Jason on my ShoutFactory Blu-ray, John and Christopher had a lot of arguments and creative differences and he would have to got into their trailers and be a mediator for the two. So, that maybe akin to why the film is so banal. I think Christopher Reeve, Thomas Dekker and Lindsey Haun give some outstanding performances and I love the last 20 minutes of the film and you got George Buck Flower and Peter Jason, Carpenter's go to guys in it. Nice nod to Above Suspicion, where he becomes paralyzed and just a few days after shooting post production, he sadly had his accident, crippling him and leading to his demise. It's all gonna go in my horror movie coincidence book and TH-cam channel. I loved that movie. Good work and good luck and keep them coming.

My love for this movie mostly comes from nostalgia. I know technically it's a dud. But I used to watch it on cable a lot as a kid so I can't completely hate it now. I bought the dvd at a pawn shop for $2 and I'll still watch it occasionally. Definitely not one of Carpenter's best though. Not by a long shot.

When it comes to creepy kid movies, try and find Bloody Birthday. It's on DVD, and trust me: you want to own it. And I'd love to hear your take on this gloriously sick puppy. Just adopt the same attitude that works the best when confronting Shyamalan's The Happening: treat it like a comedy. It's a riot.

Yeah, this was an average movie that loses steam after the initial plot set up. It just goes thru the motions as one after another is manipulated to off themselves. It gets tedious. Reeve does indeed carry the film with his performance.
It's watchable if I'm in the mood.

This is what he said about his approach to remaking this movie "This is more straight. This is more a baby-boomer, middle-class kind of a movie. There's nothing wrong with that; I just hadn't done one of those in a long time. If you make a movie over $10 million, you have got to try to reach out to the broadest audience you can find. If you make it under $10 million, you're able to make it more quirky, more daring, more subversive, if you want to use that word. That's the joy of low-budget filmmaking. You can be tough, you can be down, you can be all sorts of things that from a business standpoint you can't do when you get over a certain budget." So that’s explains some of it.

I think a remake would be cool, but expand past the kids. Either them transition into teenagers or start the movie with them as kids, but keep it going until they get older into teenagers...or show the one kid who lived as an adult and maybe he has a kid who eventually gets older and then the aliens come back. Would be cool to see Brandon Routh as Chris Reeves character only because he can play Chris so damn well, but that would be too on the nose lol

  • @TheHorrorMiserMontyG

You should have check out the 1960 version as the kids look more creepy-looking in that film than they do in the remake.
