    I definitely like the MTH Electric Trains brand Santa Fe General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive #868 pulling 16 cars of a goods train in this video, we can also see the LGB Christmas Coca Cola steam train running on a loop; in another video, where we introduce the MTH brand Norfolk Southern Railway Honoring Our First Responders Train #911 and a cameo of James the Really Super Splendid #5 2-6-0 Red Tender Engine from Bachmann, we will see the Amtrak passenger train #500, and the Santa Fe General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive #868 pulling 17 cars of the longest goods train you've ever seen in any of the other TH-cam videos.
    We also see the Amtrak passenger train #500.
    And near the end of this video, we see Thomas the #1 Blue 0-6-0 E2 Tank Engine pulling Annie and Clarabel from Bachmann.
    All three G scale model trains go through the Red Tunnel.
    This is Thomas Comeau, signing off today for now!

      MTH Electric Trains still keeps on going strong with updates and more!
      MTH Electric Trains is going to make a G scale Big Boy steam locomotive!
      And also, MTH Electric Trains is still going to make the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives in seven different paint schemes of seven remaining railways, since you have three of the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives in three different paint schemes of three different railways like Amtrak, Santa Fe Railway, and Norfolk Southern Railway Honoring Our First Responders!
      As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!

    Hi Jim, I happened on this video while searching layouts for ideas. I am impressed. This was not a quick set up. While I love the trains what I want to know is how you filmed them? Running around the layout backwards seems too simple. The transitions were smooth and beautiful. Had you been outside I would have thought it was just drone footage. Care to let us in on the process? Awesome video and beautiful trains, have to say the Amtrak was my favorite.

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shots that look like drone shots were simply me walking along with the train, with a GoPro on the end of a three foot long selfie stick. The GoPro Hero 7 black has excellent built-in image stabilization, which gives some nice smoothness to the shot in spite of the fact that the camera was shaking like crazy on the end of that long selfie stick.

      Well, you better get one fast. They're still in stock at Trainworld.com, but they won't be for long. MTH makes these in very limited quantities, and they tend to sell out and become totally unavailable after that. You can get one right now at
      www.trainworld.com/manufacturers/mth-trains/mth-70-2117-1-santa-fe-dash-8-diesel-rd-868-with-proto-sound-3-0/

    Love the santa fe diesel. Just ordered one and having it converted to battery. Bending over outside cleaning 400 feet of track gets hard on the body. If, I did indoor layout, would only run track power. Love your engines.

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually set it up for 2 or 3 days at a time. She just asks that I remove the track from the kitchen at the end of the day so that she doesn't have to dodge the tracks in the morning. After we're all done with breakfast, I put the kitchen track back in. But like I said, it's only like you see in this video for 2 or 3 days at a time... and this only happens on average about once a month. So, it's not really that big of a sacrifice for her to step over some tracks 2 or 3 days a month.

    • @JimZim

    Can you please make a really long train and run it on the layout

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one in this video has 17 cars on it... that was every freight car I own! So, the only way I could go any longer would be to mix freight cars and passenger cars... which wouldn't be very realistic. Or, I could buy more freight cars... but I've basically run out of room to store trains in my house.

    Hi Jim. I bought my grandson this Thomas the Train (Ready to Play) and found there are no additional cars made for it that can run on its track and the track seems to be adaptable only to Lionels other Ready to Play train systems. I notice all of your trains seem to be running on the same type of track. Is that true or is each train system running on a track adaptable to the individual train? I'm trying to find out if i can purchase different trains to run on the Thomas track.

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are not Lionel Ready To Play trains. Those are completely different and not compatible with anything but other Lionel Ready To Play trains. What you see in this video are G scale trains, including Thomas The Tank Engine in G scale. There are quite a few Thomas & Friends characters available in G scale, but it won't work with your Lionel stuff and is also hugely more expensive.

  • @mrtruckingtaurus3940
    @mrtruckingtaurus3940 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    How do you remember the track Configuration

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.
      If you're wondering how I know what's coming up ahead of the train... for example, which way switches are thrown ahead of the train... I control the train by a tablet, so I am able to walk around with the train as it goes around the house and I can see everything in front of the train... not unlike being the engineer in the front of the locomotive.
      If you're asking how I remember the layout so that I can build the same layout again the next time I set the trains up... I try to do a different layout each time I set up the trains. Some parts of the layout are similar each time I set it up, but I always try to do something a little different than the previous times. If you watch several of the model train videos on my channel, you'll see some big and small differences from layout to layout.

    All LGB track? How much you think you have invested in just track?

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I never kept a detailed accounting of the costs. It's a lot, that's for sure. My feeling is that you should not buy cheap track. If you do, that's only going to set you up for trouble later. When I got started in G scale, the consensus seemed to be that LGB made the best quality track. So, I've always bought LGB track. And I never want to think of a cool layout but not be able to make it because I don't have enough track. So, I have a LOT of track!

      Thomas is actually one of the least expensive G scale trains. Thomas cost about $200 and each of the cars was about $70. But it's the track that is hugely expensive at about $8 per foot. Other G-scale locomotives that you see in this video cost about $1000 and the cars behind them cost about $200 each.

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A lot of the locomotives in my collection have DCC built in, but some don't. So, I run DCC when I can, but some of my layouts also involve a separate set of tracks with analog controls. The DCC system I use is by MRC. The reason I like that one is that it's really easy to integrate it with a WiFi unit that allows me to control my trains from a phone or a tablet. There are apps for both iPhone and Android that work with it. It works really well for me. I especially like it for the layouts that go outside of my house... as it makes it really easy for me to walk along with the train with a tablet in my hand and control the train from right there, wherever I am on the layout.

      Married for 39 years. People see these videos and jump to the assumption that the tracks are set up like that every day. Nope. A few days, at most... and typically about once a month, that's all. The wife doesn't put up much of a fuss, and she likes the advertising revenue that TH-cam shares with us. One million views to a video roughly equates to $1000 in to our bank account. Go look at how many views these model train videos get on my channel, and do the math. Someone can put up with having to step over some train tracks 2 or 3 days a month for that kind of money.
