You people don't understand but this is the very concept of Javert manifesting perfectly upon an audiovisual medium. Nothing else has ever captured this absolute tempest of a man. The wretchedness. The insanity. The girlswag, to quote. The homosexuality. This is Hugo's strange man.
I fell in love with Terry after hearing the Original Cast recording. Still brilliant here. (And words can't express how I cringed at Russell Crowe, but that's a different issue.)
@@Jessica_Roth I have vehemently avoided Crowe ever since I got into Les Mis. The 2012 movie is a lot of people's favorite, which I respect, but I just can't stand Crowe and Jackman in their roles...
OK this is so weird because for the first minute he seems absolutely wasted and then he just slowly grooves into actually a really good Javert. Being one of the oldest to play the role he's able to pick up on that worn out, embittered veteran of a long-winded struggle while still seeming commanding and intimidating. Even on his off days, this man's able to pull it off!
Terrence Mann is the most wonderful singer in the whole world! Terrance Mann is my favorite singer, dancer, and broadway singer. There is never gonna be any one else like Terrence Mann.
Other cast: “hey, Tel, I bet you can’t do a performance after washing down a shit ton of ket with a bottle of absinthe” Terrance Mann: “I’ll take that wager”
After watching this for the first time, I was absolutely floored by his acting and singing. Then I read the comments (I KNOW -- Major mistake) and then went back and RE-watched it, looking for all the flaws people mentioned. Bottom line, my final opinion is that this performance is very close to flawless. I see no stumble, hear no "hiccups". If he was indeed drunk during this performance, I can't wait to see him! The vocal performance is exceptional. Thank you for sharing! Peace~
I can guarantee you he is not drunk. It is damn near impossible to sing well with alcohol in your system. TM is just so in tune with Javert at this point that he understands the character better than anyone. He was the original Javert in the broadway show and all the Javerts people have seen are different takes on the character. So they don't particularly like TM's performance here, he was 52 and killing it. I'm sure if he was 36 like he was in his original run everyone would be tooting a different horn.
I dressed Javier and Marius in the Pre- Broadway run at the Kennedy Ctr. Terry was an incredible singer and performer , besides a great personality and sense of humor. I dressed three more productions of Les Mis and Terry was always tops in my book.
@@haydenkharrazi you can't say I'm wrong without an explanation and besides I am right because even though acting is a big part of Musical Theatre the musical aspect is more important because if you sing bad no matter how good of an actor you are you won't get repeat sales
Mann's portrayal reminds me a lot of John Malkovich's in the 2000 TV miniseries with Gérard Depardieu. It seems like the two Javerts have similar demeanor and mannerisms.
he is so differently to how one is used to see Javert nowadays, no? Nowdays, Javert ist a super-correct, rigid, self-absolbed kind of character... Terrence plays him as someone who didn't have his life purpose before but finding it by pursuing some criminal.
You're hearing it out of a tin-can recording... Although it may be so that Terence Mann had a drinking problem, it suits the character very well that he would sing as such...
Which is funny because I read somewhere else he was wanted for Enjolras which reminds me how Tyler Hanes played Enjolras one time and then went on to play Tugger 😩😩😩
In October, he's going to be at a Theatre festival in VA and I'm so excited. He is so talented, and in my opinion, he's among the best to ever play Javert, maybe even the best.
Did anyone else notice him looking straight into the camera at multiple points? Note: I really didn't see that much wrong with this performance. Annunciation could've been better at times but he never appeared drunk or "off."
You do know that he didn't know that the camera was there, right? This was someone who snuck in their camera and was recording illegally. The poor conflicting lighting and camera angle mixed with a tin can mic resulted in a poor video.
@jayala7293 Terrence Mann actually was one of the original bunch of Jekyll/Hydes in Wildhorn's musical before it made it to Broadway. I'm not sure if he ever did a fully staged version though--I think they were just workshops.
@JasonRadley If you like Les Miz or Phantom, you'll like Jekyll and Hyde. I'd recommend getting the Anthony Warlow (The Complete Work) version. Look up Jekyll and Hyde Confrontation on TH-cam (again, preferably with Anthony Warlow) it's awesome!
I think was an off night for him. He is indeed very talented, just sometimes, he likes to experiment with his characters. Sometimes it works, other times, well, just watch the video.
I've heard so many people talk about how he was drunk during his run of this show. And I can't deny he does seem drunk. He messes up the lyrics and his acting is weird and all over the place. Pretty funny tbh.
This is hilarious. He appears to be very drunk, regardless of whether or not he is. If he is drunk, it would explain why he seems to be supporting himself in order to stay standing, and why--as someone else mentioned--he keeps hiccuping. I think the best is "God be witneHHH" near the beginning.
@JasonRadley You know that there IS a musical called Jekyll & Hyde, right? It was on Broadway in 1997 til 2003 i believe. He'd be a great Jekyll/Hyde though :)
