    Thank you for your most informative video. I'm about to embark on reloading for the first time and this has been immensely helpful to me. The tricks of the trade so easy when you know how. Many thanks from Scotland.

    Read Lee’s book. The first half. Since 1975, I have found a “dirty” un-uniformed primer pocket has no bearing on accuracy.
    I can assure you that , if you make a case weaker, you are buying into an unneeded practice. Don’t thin any part of any case.
    Don’t make sense? Weakening of any part of any case is absurd!? Really

      After reading that same book I have been contemplating that very same thing. I have a hard time buying into it effecting accuracy. I seat primers till they are bottomed out. I do not uniform pockets and have had zero issues with accuracy or anything else for that matter

    Sinclair uniformer is a one piece tool, doesn't need adjustments and can't move on you. There may be other brands that are made the same way. One less thing to worry about.

      I have several similar things and use them. Every once in a while though you can have primers that don't sit flush so you need a deeper pocket than usual to prevent slam fires.

    Is there a problem if you uniform your pockets deeper than the depth of your primer? I have done this and had no problems as long as I seat my primer flush with the bottom of the case. I also ensure that I am not taking off too much material out of the primer pocket. What do you think?

    • @JohnSmith-nz9dn
      @JohnSmith-nz9dn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just the opposite - a high primer can be very dangerous, especially in a semi-auto because you can get slam fires or out of battery explosions. Your firing pin should have plenty of protrusion to get to a primer seated a little below flush. (Firing pin protrusion on an AR-15 is usually around 0.030" for example.)

    • @tylernelson1032
      @tylernelson1032 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      so are there specs for how deep you should uniform and where can I find them? What is a slam fire or out of battery explosion?

    • @JohnSmith-nz9dn
      @JohnSmith-nz9dn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 1:51 in the video I included the SAAMI specs. At the bottom it says seat the primers from flush to 0.008" below the face of the cartridge. A slam fire is a round going off when the bolt or slide closes but might not be locked. An out of battery explosion is when the round goes off before it is completely chambered. Either can cause severe damage to the weapon and personal injury.

    • @tylernelson1032
      @tylernelson1032 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      so you would rather have a recessed primer than a flush one for those safety reasons.
      Obviously this is not advised but can you go slightly deeper in the primer pocket than SAAMI specs as long as the primer is not seated lower than 0.008" below the face of the cartridge?
      Lets say you needed to go a few more thousandths to get uniformity.

    • @JohnSmith-nz9dn
      @JohnSmith-nz9dn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at the SAAMI sheet again - 0.008" below flush is in spec.
      Going deeper won't improve uniformity - it will just seat the primers deeper.

    Any problems with the set screw coming loose on the RCBS uniformer and the depth of cut increasing?

    • @JohnSmith-nz9dn
      @JohnSmith-nz9dn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haven't had a problem with mine. I'd bet if the setscrew was loose the cutter would just push back in until it pressed against the adjuster, so you'd be OK.

  • @Honk_Clank
    @Honk_Clank 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That moment you remove the set screw & realize it broke off inside.
