The only downside I can think of for Queen is radio oversaturation. It's not even their fault, but every time I hear We Will Rock You/ We are the Campions, or Bohemian Rhapsody I put on something else. Those songs have absolutely been driven directly into the ground.
Agreed. Plus I've never been the biggest fan of the like "Radio Gaga" era. Don't get me wrong, I think the music itself is great, just not my style. Really preferred their 70's albums
Those songs were driven into the ground years ago. They have since then been dug back up, brought back to life, and driven back into the ground a second time..
I have the worst thing about Queen. Overplayed to the point where I genuinely consider murder everytime I hear Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, or Another One Bites the Dust.
That’s me with Journey (my fav band) I get Don’t Stop Believing is their biggest hit and one of the most popular songs in music history period but dear god I might actually deepthroat a gun if i hear it once more At least play the new version with Arnel Pineda his voice is way nicer on the ears than Steve Perry to me at least
I've hit this phase with The Beatles, really love their lesser known songs (and I still enjoy some of their more popular songs to) but God forbid, if I hear Hey Jude again I'm biffing my phone out my window
I dismissed MCR as "edgy emo junk" for years before i actually listened to the composition and lyrics of their songs. Now they're my favorite band of all time. Truly poetic songwriters.
They're so good oml I love how their lyrics tell basically like a whole story and not to mention the music is really really well written, they're all amazing musicians
I used to listen to them all the time and people hate on them without having even heard of any of their songs 😢 the black parade is such a genius album especially when you consider how EVERY ALBUM links together in one big story
my "worst" for queen would be they've achieved such a mainstream presence that you can't just simply listen to their music anymore. It sounds so much like "fill-in music for tv shows" or music thats played in a store to my ears now
That is true for their huge hits, but even "moderately successful" stuff like Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy or etc are pretty endurable. Don't stop me now though... Please stop him.
the problem is that May and Taylor sold out the songs to every commercial ever after Freddie passed...The ammount of ads that feature Queen tracks is absolutely disgusting.
Yeah, I find myself skipping many Queen songs coming on in my random playlist because I've heard them too much and often lack the right mood for listening to them. Nonetheless, I really love Queen! If I hadn't listened to them excessively in my teen years I would have never moved on to punk rock and later metal.
@@emmyjemmy4208 Many metalheads dislike Matt's voice. But some other percentage of metalheads, do actually enjoy Muse & Matt Bellamy. This one actually appreciate Muse's music performance & ability.
"Despite his talent, Ritchie Blackmore was a miserable git." I've been a huge Purple fan since "Smoke on the Water" was first on AM radio, and this is an entirely accurate statement.
@@nestalgeek3991 from the interviews Ronnie Dio gave later in his career, I don't think he had anything good to say about Ritchie as a human other than he is a great musician. Not sure about DP days, as I've never got much into them, but I imagine it's the same.
I just wish Germany had picked Rock you like a hurricane instead as the theme song for their unification. But I realise it could've given the wrong associations 😛
I feel like there could be a whole video on the ups and downs of GnR.. Appetite for Destruction is such a legendary and memorable hard rock album and feels so fresh compared to what most rock bands were releasing in the late 80's. Izzy's songwriting and rhythm playing are heads and shoulders above what GnR could produce after he left the band. Slash is probably one of the most recognizable and iconic guitar players in the world. The drumming/bass playing off of Appetite is so groovy and bluesy, Adler is criminally underrated IMO. And then on the downsides there is an avalanche of drama, drug abuse, general prima donna bullshittery, obnoxious attitude and personalities, and Axl generally just ruining everything post 90's era. You're so right to say that they should've just called it quits after Use Your Illusion, and even then I think they were losing everything special about the band.
@@marinadiamondz do you see the irony in lecturing someone for having a certain opinion on music, telling them what they believe isn't "fact", and then immediately turning around and claiming you're on the "right side" of.. (checks notes) an opinion on music? ex dee
Hello Mr Bradley hall, I have been watching your channel for a while, and you single handedly got me into shred. I saw your channel and instantly started practicing shredding paper. I built a custom machine to shred it for me in the hope of becoming the fastest paper shredder on the planet. Needless to say, my house is now a temple of shred, torn pieces of paper galore. And so I thank you, for igniting my fun (albeit messy) hobby
@@dangernoodle4305 That would require me to brush up on my 'hammer ons', in which you smash a hammer onto the piece of paper you want to shred multiple times with force. Very difficult technique
aaaagh same here, he has such an incredible range…but I understand people not liking him, his vocals do tend to be pretty damn over-the-top and he does a lot of falsetto
Because they have other good songs that never get played and everyone just associates the band with the one or two songs that get played excessively. I swear I used to LOVE Welcome To The Jungle and I even could tolerate Sweet Child O Mine until they started playing the radio at work.
Yeah fr. My favorite songs are Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody because they are so beautiful and complicated but they were played so many times people want to drive a nail gun in their ears essentially every time it’s played
With AC/DC Bon Scott was also very Philsophical and emotional in poetic ways with his songwriting such as "Ride On", "Overdose", "Night Prowler", "Its A Long Way To The Top", "Aint No Fun (Waiting Round To Be A Millionaire), "Down Payment Blues", "Gone Shootin'" "Gimme A Bullet", "Touch Too Much" among many more that aren't simply about dirty stuff. He also incorporated suspense into his writing and storytelling such as on "Jailbreak" and "Night Prowler". I like to view him as an artistic way as that's what he was a true poet. An example is the early song "Love Song" which features some absolutely beautiful lyricism and clever similies alongside metaphors, or "Night Prowler" which sound quite different than other songs they released. Bon could also use wordplay and clever metaphors to compare a topic of a song in a humorous way (The card game in the song "The Jack" which is about well...catching the jack.), writing about the hardships of being in a band, along with writing ballads such as "Ride On" which is about loneliness and depression of a ruined relationship from alcohol. He could be poetic on other songs too like "Ride On", "Down Payment Blues", "Gone Shootin'", "Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round To Be A Millionaire)" and plenty of others too like "Love Song" Bon Scott was a lyrical genius writer!
Some would say that ,,Love song" lyrics are corny but I really don't give a damn, Bon sings it from the heart. I also think that people who say all AC/DC songs sound the same mean the Brian era (and the most popular songs of that era). I still love them with Brian and I still don't think their songs sound the same but they definitely were more diverse with Bon. Just take ,,Soul Stripper" for example which doesn't sound like your typicall AC/DC at all. But hey, strict formula and the simple recognizable style are what we love them for so 🤷🏻♀️
Love Song is such a heartwarming song, overcharged with feelings and put amazingly together by AC/DC, in sad they didn't have the chance to keep experimenting with music after Bon died. Don't get me wrong, Brian has an amazing voice and I really love his work, still I think Bon era had more variety to it.
With Bon they were also just better musically for me. AC/DC had that really raw power which was great and sadly ceased to exist in the 80s. It was that wildness that got me into loving them once and even though many songs sounds very similiar or primitive, there's somethin to it that keeps you entertained. It's the soul. Soul which they lost with Bon's death.
As others have said, the image associated with 2000s emo led to me not giving MCR much attention until 7-8 years ago. Once I gave it a try I heard the many influences that combined into their sound and loved it
@@Viper-dz2kw what I mean is that a lot of their previous albums were about being sad about girls whole TBP was about facing one’s own mortality with a terminal illness. I felt that was more mature and nuanced
@@theanticitizen The "being sad abiut girls" part is the entire point of...one of their albums. Can't remember if it's Bullets or Three Cheers. Whichever one it is, It's a concept album about a man who lost his girlfriend, and makes a deal with the devil to bring her back. He has to kill a certain number of bad people in the world, and when he's eliminated all but one of those "bad people," he realizes that he is the last bad person. The songs were written that way to tell a story. Kind of like how The Black Parade was about a cancer patient who looks back on his life before he dies.
When the lowest thing you can say about a band like Alter Bridge is that "No other band will be as good" then that's some damning praise. Side note, the live version of Words Darker than their Wings still brings me to tears of joy, ESPECIALLY that high note. You know the one.
im so happy people are finally realizing that my chemical romance is genuinely an amazing band and not just "ohhhhhhh we so edgy look aty my hairrrrrrrrrr"
Literally, they've actually got so beautiful music when u think about it, like so good lyric writing, gerards voice, instrumental things, like Jesus christ I could talk about them for hours
I don't think the word "edgy" has ever been used for MCR, at least not by anyone who was around at the time. They have all the edge of a fkn banana 😆 Marketing genius though, the way they took a Smashing Pumpkins chorus, dressed it in a black school uniform, and sold it to a generation of early internet disciples who were consistently given everything they needed and wanted, apart from parental attention. It's also kinda funny (and kinda sad, and *very* telling) when you see the old emo kids popping up every now and then on comments pages and whatnot (their natural habitat), and they still have the same insecurities that ruled them as 13 year olds. In 20 years, some of them are gonna be politicians n sht. *Then* we'll be sorry, I s'pose. Sorry, was that a bit harsh? Fk it. Voice of reality. My gut says "POST" 😆
The first Rush song I heard was Tom Sawyer, it was in the TV show "Chuck." I immediately listened to the song after, and I immediately fell in love with Geddy Lee's voice. It is very unique and extremely beautiful in my opinion, although I understand why it would be off-putting to some people. But say what you will, the man is an incredible singer.
I knew the song before I watched Chuck and that episode where he uses Tom Sawyer to stop a satellite from nuking Burbank is my favorite in the series because of that
Nice to see somewhat younger folks enjoying Rush, no matter how you found it. Yeah, Geddy for sure has a unique voice, and his voice is the reason most often given why people don't care for Rush, but I don't care. They're the greatest 3 piece ever in history. Sorry, Green Day, Nirvana, etc. You guys just can't top the masters.
Tom Sawyer was the first Rush song I've ever listened to and I absolutely despised the vocals at the time. They really are an acquired taste. Now I love them.
I think I like his vocals partly because I can kinda relate to him a little on being a somewhat nerdy guy with a higher but not excessively high pitched voice who was relentlessly bullied through school, and it makes me respect him more as both an artist and as a person that he took advantage of that to propel himself into a dream career. Not to mention, Rush without him wouldn't be the same Rush. His unique vocal style and lead bass alongside Neil's insane drumming and Alex's jack-of-all-trades guitar skills made the band special.
The Doors' live concerts are pretty funny actually. And also I think that they're so much better live than in the studio. But that's a shame that we have only 4 filmed concerts. Live At The Isle Of Wight is spectacular.
I’ve always heard and known of kiss but never really sat down and listened to their stuff till recently. My parents are metalheads and never got into kiss so I always just thought they were silly. Once I actually gave them a chance, they have some incredibly catchy songs, rad riffs, and the best merch out there (the kiss action figures are killer).
I've always since they were one of the best riffs bands out there, having a seemingly endless discography where good riffs can be foun in almost every part of
I started playing because of Ace, and I freely admit that a lot of KISS is hokey. Also, Stewart Copeland is what made The Police stand out for me. He's responsible for some of my favorite 80's drumming.
I'm a fan of Queen. On the contrary, the death of Freddie is like the appropriate timing that gave away signal that the journey of Queen would have ended at the right time & spot. Any further than that I believe they will face similar disease for bands that have "overstayed" in the music career.
Queen has a lot of good songs like we will rock you dont stop me now bohemian rhapsody we are the champion bicycle race another one bites the dust and so much more
Nothing gave me so much happiness than seeing you not find anything bad to say about Queen Edit: ok a lot of you think they’re overrated. Check out their stuff that was never released as singles though, they’re amazing.
@@CrownlessStudios yeah, I remember when I was a lot younger I tried to get through their entire discography. their hard rock stuff was great, but the later synthesizer years didn't do much for me.
defo agree with the MCR one, whilst they were a part of the emo scene their music was genuinely well written and they're all great musicians who were shoved in the bin for some due to the image that the emo scene had
On god! They're easily one of the most influential rock bands to young people, I've heard someone call them this generation's Queen before and given the reception to their most recent tour, shit I'd believe it. Their music is so well thought-out and often mind-bogglingly hard. Ray Toro and Frank Iero are easily of the greatest guitar/songwriting duos of all time, and along with Gerard Way's genuinely crazy visions, art direction, costume, concepts, lyric work - it all just works out in this crazy grandiose way. MCR is awesome, I'm sick of hearing people trash on them because of the fandom/scene they were associated with. Even comparing them to other pop-emo bands of the time they stand out like a sore thumb. I genuinely feel like they haven't put out a bad album yet, either. Yeah, rambling now but MCR deserves respect - they're great. Also on a separate note : more people should look into Frank Iero's solo work, those albums are fucking killer.
Would’ve liked to see a couple female-fronted bands on the list. It would be cool to hear your opinion on bands like Heart, Fleetwood Mac (female co-fronted, but still), Evanescence, etc. Dealer’s choice, though ✌️😁
Yep, i remember saying to a friend of mine that if i wanted to listen to 20 minutes of electric guitar id pick literally any blues player over Pink floyd and i could have sworn he was about to punch me lol
I knew what was coming when Rainbow followed Deep Purple, but I still laughed because it's true...there isn't a whole lot of negatives you can say about Deep Purple. Ian Gillan arguably was the most underrated, yet influential Rock vocalist for the development of Metal
@@lukefitton7329 Absolutely. I love David Coverdale's inclination towards a raspy Blues style. Had he not gone in a nerdy dad Rock direction that was Whitesnake, he would have made some KILLER Blues Rock. No disrespect though. Most of that seems to come from us Americans who have had that one “horrendous hyper-American country ballad” from each album shoved down our throats anytime we left the house for 2 decades now. It’s justified.
Credit where it's due, Chad Kroeger has a strong rock voice, they're good songwriters and they bring it live. There are _much_ worse bands than Nickelback.
I have never understood the excessive hate Nickelback got. IMO they are kinda generic, but they are not the worst band ever as people tend to state - I have heard a lot worse groups in the last 15-20 years than Chad Kroeger and co. Besides, Burn It to the Ground and How You Remind Me are some of my biggest guilty pleasures.
The only bad thing I can think of is that they are really overplayed. I still love the band but I don't listen to them that much anymore because I'm a little tired of them.
I have one for you a lot fans stan Freddie way to much to a point where i start to dislike their music when all i hear is that this guy/gal who covered a song will never be as great as Freddie or how much he/she is nothing like Freddie. Like no shit sherlock, of course not everyone is going to reach that same level as he did. honestly i'm kind of tired that people hold him on a pedestal of some sort, and they go full gatekeeping mod when someone says that another artist is the best singer (which is highly subjective imo)
I’m 22 and starting electric guitar this weekend! I self learned a couple elementary riffs by ear already, but with no knowledge of any proper technique whatsoever lol. I’m excited to start, and glad I found your channel. I’ve always loved rock music but I need to learn more about the genre.
Thank you for listing Alter Bridge under iconic rock bands, although it's getting a lot better I feel like they are highly underrated, at least here in Europe
They have a WAAAAY bigger following here in Europe than they do their native US. But even then people always end up saying "who?" When I mention them. Also, fantastic live band.👌👌👌👌
I worry though that they might have peaked at Fortress. I haven't heard much from their new records yet, but I remember The Last Hero being a little disappointing.
I was happy to see a lot of the cons being about the frustration of hearing the hits over and over and the insufferable fans instead of shitting all over subjective art. Love it ❤️
The "worst" thing about Queen is that they come off as theatrical and melodramatic. While their music is very fun, I can't emotionally connect with it nearly as much as other music.
Whoa! That's very interesting! Cause for me it's the complete opposite. Their overtheatrical pompastic music is what makes me relate to them - feel the power, you know? Listening to them I always feel like "The world is my stage and I'm gonna use it" I mean, I'm a theatre kid, so I might be a bit biased But yeah, I get your point :)
@@happyperson1851 I tho l that can work with songs like the show must go on and princes of the universe but we will rock you and we are the champions just comes across as very overbearing. Like, “we’re better than you” sort of energy.
I always thought the worst part about Rage Against the Machine is how completely counterintuitive it is to be an anti-capitalist, anti-war, counter-culture, socialist band advocating for complete social upheaval... while profiting off of marketing, packaging, and selling that message in a capitalist market while providing precisely nothing to society but catharsis for angsty teens. They seem quite happy to be living in the USA while making money off their major recording contracts and licensing of their music. The fact that they ever even signed to a major label speaks volumes to their authenticity (they have none). Their antics are just that- a show. If they're real socialists, then John Cena is a real fighter.
after reading through this comment, I'm kinda curious what else they could do like, their music sent a message that was more than catharsis, it was informative and piqued interest in a lot of modern political issues. idk, i know i wouldn't have known much about leonard peltier without them. i do agree that their net worths are a tad hypocritical, though.
I'm glad someone brought that up about MCR, the emo shtick turned me off from listening to them and I only got around to listening to Three Cheers and the Black Parade a few years ago. They are an awesome band and I'm glad I and many others are starting look past that emo stigma.
Both are great but Three Cheers, although I'm not in the mood for it every day, is such a quality and full proof album that I'm never upset when those songs come up on my shuffle.
@@josephlicano8701 hahaha thanks dude! I had a similar experience with bring me the horizon. Never got into them when the whole scene thing was around. Went back a few years later and still think they're great
I was really surprised that you even included Alter Bridge. Too bad they never went that big as Creed did, even though the Creed songs are pretty cheesy imo. Alter Bridge is a huge step forward for everyone involved in the band as they really used the chance to show their full potential.
Guns N Roses is my favorite band of all time. I would've said Good: The Use Your Illusion duology is one of the greatest pieces of modern music ever recorded Bad: We only saw so little of the band because Axl Rose's personality caused the rest of the band to quit
The life that Axl had in his childhood plus the unmedicated mental problems at the time, led to him having several manic and erratic attacks with everyone. Poor life he led. Luckily now he's fine and happy, and he's friends again with his old bandmates.
@@marinadiamondz yeah, definitely happy for him now. It's just sad when you see the amount of musical talent the band had and to know they were only able to make 4 albums together
@@JDP2104 exactly :( but don't be sad! Slash said that he really wants to do an entire new material album with guns the next year :D, when the tour ends
When you realise that Axl was the only sober man surrounded by addicts it makes perfect sense why he felt he needed to take control of the band. GNR is a brand and when all but one of the brand owners are fucked out of their minds it can cause a lot of problems. Axl himself said he was “salvaging guns not stealing it”
Yeah right? I mean it's peculiar that someone say that is an 'accquired taste, cause eddies voice it's not even bothering or boring, also he is a solid good singer
GNR is sure not the same as their prime like no other band is. However, Ive attended to one of their concerts this year and they are still rocking so fuckin good with their 3.5 hour long setlist. Sure, Axl doesnt sound the same but this doesnt keep you from enjoying every bit of their concert.
Please, do something like it for new "on-the-rise" rock and metal bands, like Spiritbox, Lorna Shore, Maneskin, The Warning, Babymetal, Plush etc... I bet your opinions would be hilarious lol
Pros - They had some of the best vocal harmonies in rock history, they have barely any filler songs in their classic albums, they had great acoustic songs in all of their albums unlike other bands that include one or two acoustic ballads because their producers force them to, Layne and Jerry had one of the best voices and guitar tone respectively in all of rock history, and they managed to put out some good songs after reuniting Cons - Layne's addiction basically stopped the bands' momentum starting from the year 1996 until they decided to reunite with a different singer 14 years later, they should have renamed the band after Layne's death since they don't feel like the same band anymore (although I understand why Cantrell wouldn't want to do that), their 3 albums post Layne are repetitive because some of the songs are so similar they just blend into a mush, and in hindsight it seems like they are the most overlooked band out of the big 4 grunge bands despite being the best one next to Soundgarden
should have mentioned how Led Zep published a lot of songs they didn't write, without giving songwriting credits to the original writers. I say that as a big fan of them.
What you said about Geddy’s vocals is true. Even more than that is how their sound changed in the late 80s/early 90s to just sound like the pop rock at the time. They stopped pushing the envelope as time went on. RIP Neil
I'm wondering where you draw the line, because Power Windows was kind of the height of their synthesizer use, but I fucking LOVE that album. It's one of my favorites of theirs, right up there with "Hemispheres."
@@metalboy5150 If you love Power Windows, more power to you, brother! To answer your question, I personally draw the line around Presto/Roll the Bones. There are great songs coming from those albums, but they're not as progressive as their earlier material was.
Niel Schon is the man. Every time I listen to a full journey album I'm blown away by the song writing talent. ALSO Deep Purple and Rainbow rule.... but Ritchie is SUCH a miserable git.
Niel is one of the biggest rock lengends IMO. Apart from journey, he was part of (arguably) the best Santana lineup, he was in bad English and he also cofounded hardline (probably the most underrated hair metal band of all time)
@@thecollector4332 Yeah, Neal really is just sorely underrated and overlooked when people talk about great guitarists. Journey in general does tend to be a bit Cheesy (and Bad English, my God, the cheese is very audible), but Neal is a goddamn amazing guitarist and songwriter. Just listen to the solo on "Feeling That Way" (back when Greg Rolle was still in Journey, Neal left Santana with Greg and they founded Journey together), and tell me that's not a classic solo. Not super difficult, just awesome.
Rainbow is one of my favourite bands, and Richie Blackmore’s difficult character has never bothered me. In fact, I have always liked it. At least, he has never been a hypocrite.
I feel the same way about MCR. For the longest time, I dismissed them because of the edgy, tormented emo shtick (plus I knew a girl in high school who was a MASSIVE fangirl, which also contributed to my having a sour taste). But recently, I have them a fair listen and they're honestly pretty good!
I think some of the post grunge vocalists, like Chad Kroeger and Scott Stapp, make Eddie look bad in hindsight because they copied his style so hard, they've reached the point of unintentional parody.
I can agree with the business part considering how much they charge if you want to buy a stage-used guitar or bass from Paul or Gene. Like, it’s fucking insane
0:38 their music is heavily overused in media, which becomes anoying after a while. No kidding, love this band but several times I've had to 'take rests'
Oh? It's the quite the opposite for me, everytime I hear Queen I get excited, but it's just that Queen's music is kinda fitting for certain types of media, like "We are the Champions" "You're my Best Friend" "Don't stop me Now" and etc. Or maybe just cus I don't hear Queen alot in media all the time and that's why I always get excited.
So a few things - for Queen I'd say their egos and pomposity can be hard for some to stomach - We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions are clearly a little erring on the self-congratulatory side of things, even if everyone took those songs and applied it to themselves hahaha. Journey... I'm surprised you didn't mention Steve Perry in the best thing about Journey. The dude was so good Brian May said his voice was "one in a million" and he was in a band with Freddie fucking Mercury Bon Jovi - Richie was always the best thing about Bon Jovi. The Die hard fans all agree Richies vocals are actually BETTER than Jon's. His solo album Stranger In This Town is something very worth checking out, even if you're not the biggest Bon Jovi fan.
“Princes of the Universe” has that self-congratulatory feel you mentioned as well. That song is also pretty disjointed, which is a complain I’d move against the band.
I'll try to say it simply - Queen is a rock band for those who can't stand rock music :) Just because they listen to some freaking "Bohemian Rhapsody" they can say they love rock music while in reality, they don't. Also this "How can you not love Queen?!! It's the ART!" can make you snap and start listening to The Exploited 24/7.
This is pretty spot on, especially about the older/more dated bands that inspired entire genres but haven't aged that well in isolation. Queen and Alter Bridge ❤️ Bit harsh on early Green Day though. No way was American Idiot their peak.
Wait, what? What would you consider to be "early" Green Day? At this point, I still see "American Idiot" as newer Green Day. Early Green Day is "Kerplunk" or "Dookie." Even maybe "Insomniac" (great fucking album, and I'm not even a Green Day fan) or "Nimrod.," but certainly no later than that.
Deftones: I think they are one of those few bands that have a characteristic and original sound in addition to being one of the ones that has aged best with the // they last 2 albums are really really bring and and are that types of álbum wich you remember 1 or 2 songs and you don't care about the rest
Wind of change is a very popular song here in Malaysia. Coincided with the rise of our local rock'n'roll & hair/glam rock-metal scene in the 80s & 90s.
I like how weird his style is. A riff guy who rarely writes good solos is Tom Morello, some of the solos on Audioslave don't fit their respective song at all.
@@blakederby3932 Kim's guitar solos have a much more of a late 60's/early 70's influence to them, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Stooges, etc. That's part of why grunge went down so well with people. It was punk crossed with old school hard rock. It felt refreshing after a decade of dudes trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen or Yngwie Malmsteen. And I like shred stuff too.
Cons of Queen is that they initially aimed to, and could be, serious rock-opera prog band, but dropped it just to please as many people as they could. Would't agree about Crimso. Their music is as uncomfortable as modern technical progress. If You do like their first album more then You would wish to live at sixties really, but it has its own problems, as seventies at the door and so.
Agreed. Queen II is where they definitely hit the crossroad and had to choose between going deeper into the prog rock tunnel or put out a more radio friendly album. Unfortunately for prog listeners, the latter was the case.
Awesome! And I can suggest at least two reasons to hate Queen: 1. There are only so many times you can listen to... any of their songs. At some point, you just start puking uncontrollably at the first chords of... any of their songs. You just can't... can't anymore... 2. Every one of your 80+ year-old relatives starts a Christmas table conversation with you by saying "You listen to rock music, huh? I love it too. I love Queen".
Idk about the first one... yeah, the hits get really overplayed and annoying after a while, but some of their less well known songs, like Liar and '39, at least to me, could never get old. And you gotta admit, when you hear Bohemian Rhapsody start playing in the radio, yeah, you wanna puke, but you'll start singing nonetheless. Every. Single. Time.
You missed one of my all time favs - Dream Theater. Incredible Instrumentalists, no one will question that. But I've always wondered how would they sound if they had a more manly sounding vocals and if they weren't so sick in their music. Like there are so many songs that I can divide into 2 or 3 parts, where part 1 is INSANE good, part 2 is OK and part 3 is just hard to listen to 🙂
Dude, no. The Foo Fighters Chris Shiflett is a legitimately amazing guitarist who can pull off just about any style thrown at him and can hang with the best of them.
Yeah. My pick for worst thing about the Foo Fighters would be how they've fallen into a rut of very earnest MOTR rock music when there was a real sense of fun to a lot of their earlier stuff.
Matt Bellamy has a great voice though, you could argue that his early voice sounds too high pitched with a lot of sighing but he perfected it in recent years. For me the downside could be that "We need a revolution" and stuff lyrics are starting to make me sick and that pop elements that they're adding on every album are sounding worse and worse
I love how there was nothing bad you could say about Alter Bridge. Hyped to see them in March for their current tour. And yes Myles Kennedy's voice is the best.
1:08 Personal opinion: I think that the WORST of Pearl Jam is how their lyrics have worsen through the years, and how messy the line distribution has gotten in recent albums. The first albums of Pearl Jam are masterpieces and the lyrics are beautiful; they still release some beautiful songs to this day, but they also become a bit of annoying cuz there are very few pauses to listen to the melody. It’s difficult to memorize most of the new songs because of the amount of lines there are in them and, sometimes, that makes them not enjoyable as much.
dude, "uncomfortable listen" is the whole point of King Crimson :D:D they are a Prog band with a strong avant-garde edge to their songwriting...... so, it's not about them not being talented, it's literally their shtick to make you uncomfortable...... the point of that songwriting, is to make the mirror-opposite to pop music (which is inherently formulated to make you feel good)...... that's quite frankly the point of ALL experimental/avant-garde music...... 100% agree with your take on My Chemical Romance (I knew right away there was more to them, than fucking eye-liners...... that's why I still love them, even as a metalhead)
Best thing about Rage Against the Machine: *"Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"* (1992) Worst thing about Rage Against the Machine: *"Fuck yeah, I will do what you tell me!"* (2020)
Muse has long been one of my favorite bands. I'm kind of surprised the voice was your pick. While he does a lot of pretentious wailing and vibrato, I think my primary pet peeve are the lyrics. For writing such grand, bombastic glam-rock-esque music, the lyrics are usually cheesy and boring compared to other songwriters of similar caliber. I don't know, it's hard to show people how cool they are when the lyrics just feel uncomfortably cheesy and immature. Still my favorite band and likely always will be.
@@emmyjemmy4208 i feel like some of their songs have moved towards a more “pop”-y genre, especially on WotP with Compliance. i still love em to death honestly, but it’s a very different style from the albums they released pre-2010’s.
My "worst" for Nirvana would be that they killed the idea that rock could be fun. Before Nirvana you had arena rock, hair metal, new wave, and even a lot of pop songs had prominent guitar parts. After Nirvana, if you weren't depressed or pissed off then you weren't "authentic" enough.
The Beatles: I kind of agree with the negative here - I haven't really got into the Beatles for this reason. I mean, I appreciate the absolute revolution they brought to music, but from what I've heard of their stuff, it's not really my thing. AC/DC: Definitely agree. No one does plain and simple rock n' roll like them. Lynyrd Skynyrd: Yeah, I never loved Free Bird for that reason. Alter Bridge: Yet another reminder I need to listen to more of their stuff. Kiss: I can agree with the latter - Kiss to me feel like it's more about the image than the music. King Crimson: Yep, ItCotCK is timeless - even now, it still sounds incredibly unique. And yeah, the late career stuff can be a challenge to get through (looking at you, Construkction of Light), but there's some gems in there if you persist - Dinosaur, Walking on Air and Level Five are three favourites of mine. Rainbow: Aye.
OK, I can tell something slightly negative about Queen. As a big fan of the band. Freddie was an amazing singer and frontman, that's for sure, but sometimes his operatic delivery gets... not annoying, no, but kinda tiresome. That's why I sometimes lean to the songs where Roger and Brian sang the lead vocals. Especially Brian - not the strongest singer, but his melancholic voice is very captivating.
I think the lack of cohesion is a positive The songs all have a distinct style to them because Freddie would get super bored if they did the same thing over and over. They all have a similar vibe that’s recognizable as Queen but they’re all so different that anyone can find something they like from them. You like a good hard stadium filling song? Hammer To Fall. Want a calm and beautiful ballad? Love Of My Life. Good motivation? Don’t Stop Me Now and We Are The Champions. Something to get your body moving? Another One Bites The Dust, so on. I think the pompousness just comes with the fame, or Freddie just being Freddie
Rush is my all time favorite band and Lee is my all time favorite singer. Geddy's vocals are a no go for most people and I can't blame them for thinking that way. I'm one of the few who liked his voice right away and actually had a hard time to get used to their complex music instead, because I wasn't a musician yet when I found them out. But I was crazy about Glenn Hughes and Plant's crazy high style of singing. Lee used to sing constantly on the high E(E5,12th fret on the first string on standard tunning) on the early days, and that's uncommon even for female singers. A good example of that is "No one at the bridge".
You should make a part two. Here are a few suggestions: Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, The White Stripes, Royal Blood, The Strokes, Fleet Foxes, The Blue Stones, Tame Impala.
Once Freddy was being interviewed by a Korean journalist lady who asked "why you call band kooween", Freddy smiled and looked straight at the camera and said "next question"! It was great!
The only downside I can think of for Queen is radio oversaturation. It's not even their fault, but every time I hear We Will Rock You/ We are the Campions, or Bohemian Rhapsody I put on something else. Those songs have absolutely been driven directly into the ground.
Absolutely agreed. Those are terrific songs, but even your favorite song in the world gets old after you've heard it 1000456.82 times.
Agreed. Plus I've never been the biggest fan of the like "Radio Gaga" era. Don't get me wrong, I think the music itself is great, just not my style. Really preferred their 70's albums
Yeah but that's on the media and culture rather than the band itself tho
Those songs were driven into the ground years ago. They have since then been dug back up, brought back to life, and driven back into the ground a second time..
Nah the downside for Queen is Hot Space
I have the worst thing about Queen.
Overplayed to the point where I genuinely consider murder everytime I hear Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, or Another One Bites the Dust.

You're so right to say that they should've just called it quits after Use Your Illusion, and even then I think they were losing everything special about the band.

aaaagh same here, he has such an incredible range…but I understand people not liking him, his vocals do tend to be pretty damn over-the-top and he does a lot of falsetto
I love how the biggest complaint about a lot of bands is that they wrote a song that was too good so it gets played everywhere 😂
The problem is "they have other good songs, but those don't get played"
Because they have other good songs that never get played and everyone just associates the band with the one or two songs that get played excessively. I swear I used to LOVE Welcome To The Jungle and I even could tolerate Sweet Child O Mine until they started playing the radio at work.
@@spaceace4387 Yeah, even the best songs turn sour when they're played to death.

But hey, strict formula and the simple recognizable style are what we love them for so 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you so much for this comment

@@theanticitizen The "being sad abiut girls" part is the entire point of...one of their albums. Can't remember if it's Bullets or Three Cheers. I don't think the word "edgy" has ever been used for MCR, at least not by anyone who was around at the time. They have all the edge of a fkn banana 😆
Marketing genius though, the way they took a Smashing Pumpkins chorus, dressed it in a black school uniform, and sold it to a generation of early internet disciples who were consistently given everything they needed and wanted, apart from parental attention.

@@josephlicano8701 hahaha thanks dude! Maiden is my all time favorite band and Brave New World my personal favorite by them, it really stands out, you must know it, the songs are brilliant to me, super catchy, the melodies are beyond this world, like in Blood Brothers for example. Never experienced such goosebumps in a song before
I had a similar experience with bring me the horizon.
I would've said
Good: The Use Your Illusion duology is one of the greatest pieces of modern music ever recorded
Bad: We only saw so little of the band because Axl Rose's personality caused the rest of the band to quit
Also, drugs.
When you realise that Axl was the only sober man surrounded by addicts it makes perfect sense why he felt he needed to take control of the band. GNR is a brand and when all but one of the brand owners are fucked out of their minds it can cause a lot of problems. Axl himself said he was “salvaging guns not stealing it”
Now that i think about it, Queen really is a band that has no downsides... great songs... great lyrics and great band members...
If you don't like Eddie Vedder's voice. Something is wrong with you
Yeah I loved his voice from the very first time I heard it. Dave Mustaine would be a better example of an acquired taste, not Vedder
I watched INXS blow gnr off the stage just a year after appetite came out when they were the biggest band in the world.
Please, do something like it for new "on-the-rise" rock and metal bands, like Spiritbox, Lorna Shore, Maneskin, The Warning, Babymetal, Plush etc... I bet your opinions would be hilarious lol
I'm also extremely curious what he thinks about Jinjer.
@@HorseloverFat1984 good idea, Jinjer too!
That bit about MCR is too true. Hated them for no good reason growing up, love their music now! Spot on, Mr. Hall
Surprised you haven’t mentioned Alice In Chains in any of these videos
x2
Pros - They had some of the best vocal harmonies in rock history, they have barely any filler songs in their classic albums, they had great acoustic songs in all of their albums unlike other bands that include one or two acoustic ballads because their producers force them to, Layne and Jerry had one of the best voices and guitar tone respectively in all of rock history, and they managed to put out some good songs after reuniting
Cons - Layne's addiction basically stopped the bands' momentum starting from the year 1996 until they decided to reunite with a different singer 14 years later, they should have renamed the band after Layne's death since they don't feel like the same band anymore (although I understand why Cantrell wouldn't want to do that), their 3 albums post Layne are repetitive because some of the songs are so similar they just blend into a mush, and in hindsight it seems like they are the most overlooked band out of the big 4 grunge bands despite being the best one next to Soundgarden
should have mentioned how Led Zep published a lot of songs they didn't write, without giving songwriting credits to the original writers. I say that as a big fan of them.
What you said about Geddy’s vocals is true. Even more than that is how their sound changed in the late 80s/early 90s to just sound like the pop rock at the time. They stopped pushing the envelope as time went on. RIP Neil
I have only two words:
Clockwork Angels
@@StormtrooperInStilettos Can't tell if you're saying you like Clockwork Angels or not.
Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Counterparts, Snakes & Arrows and Clockwork Angels are all some of their best albums from their “later” period
Dude plays guitar so hard he gave himself tinnitus
Rainbow is one of my favourite bands, and Richie Blackmore’s difficult character has never bothered me. In fact, I have always liked it. At least, he has never been a hypocrite.
I love you and Rainbow
Actually I just listen to Freebird exactly for the solo 😅
If you don't listen to freebird for the solo then why are you listening to freebird 🤣
Despite it being a bunch of blues licks, it's the endurance and pure badassary that make it So great
It’s just such a great song anyways, I listen to it all
I feel the same way about MCR. For the longest time, I dismissed them because of the edgy, tormented emo shtick (plus I knew a girl in high school who was a MASSIVE fangirl, which also contributed to my having a sour taste). But recently, I have them a fair listen and they're honestly pretty good!
I agree Eddie Vedder's voice is an acquired taste but man, I have acquired it. All of the big 4 of grunge just had sensational frontmen.
I think some of the post grunge vocalists, like Chad Kroeger and Scott Stapp, make Eddie look bad in hindsight because they copied his style so hard, they've reached the point of unintentional parody.
King Crimson's negative was literally the best thing about them
Who else knew what the worst thing about Rainbow was going to be before he even said it?
as a devout my chemical romance fan, i cannot agree more with this
A better KISS negative: Their whole business and merchandise stuff + the stage esthetics overshadow their music.
I don’t think that’s the band’s fault that’s just the fans and people in general
The dude was so good Brian May said his voice was "one in a million" and he was in a band with Freddie fucking Mercury
Bon Jovi - Richie was always the best thing about Bon Jovi.
Glad someone mention Strangers in Town. That album is criminally underrated.

Queen and Alter Bridge ❤️
Bit harsh on early Green Day though.
American Idiot was definitely their peak for me.
Not interested in any of their stuff post-American idiot.
Deftones: I think they are one of those few bands that have a characteristic and original sound in addition to being one of the ones that has aged best with the // they last 2 albums are really really bring and and are that types of álbum wich you remember 1 or 2 songs and you don't care about the rest
You pulled your punches on Queen - you could apply the same criticism that you gave to Kiss and it wouldn't have been unfair.
When I saw that Rainbow was right after Deep Purple, I totally called it.
Living in mainland Europe (the northern part), I can't say I've ever actually heard Winds of Change by Scorpions.
Well it's mostly Eastern Europe and parts of ex USSR countries
Wind of change is a very popular song here in Malaysia.
Coincided with the rise of our local rock'n'roll & hair/glam rock-metal scene in the 80s & 90s.
love King Crimson. My favourite band along with Yes, Marillion and Iron Maiden.
Yeah, King Crimson is awesome
I have no problem with Kim Thayil's guitar solos. He was always more of a riff guy anyways.
I like how weird his style is. A riff guy who rarely writes good solos is Tom Morello, some of the solos on Audioslave don't fit their respective song at all.
Personally I enjoy the uniqueness of Tahyils solos, they feel ethereal and they reject the over the top hammerons and pulloffs of the 80s
Plus they always serve the song, like 4th of July doesn't need an over the top solo
3:46 "despite his talent, Richie Blackmore was a miserable git"
Me: see, he gets it.
I Love the fact that you gave Nickelback Justice, Their Older Albums (Curb, The State and Silver Side Up) are amazing
the second I saw Queen, I took out my pitchfork, ready to use it if you said one bad word about them. :D Great list, btw :)
You know "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is overplayed when even in the 90s, Kurt Cobain refused to play it live and was sick of it.
teen spirit was a deodorant spray which smells Bad. that's why he didn't want to play it when he learned form it.
Awesome! And I can suggest at least two reasons to hate Queen:
Every. Single. Time.
@@mikaylachapman9036 It's a weird kind of reflexive singing :))) I feel like Pavlov's dog.
Whenever a Queen song comes on the radio I can't turn it off quick enough.
Me who's immune to number 1: Pathetic
4:43 Sorry about that, I'm trying to cut back, but my doctor says I need at least three guitar solos a day.

The guy crushed it on a lot of songs that they played in the Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts, great guitarist!
Yeah. My pick for worst thing about the Foo Fighters would be how they've fallen into a rut of very earnest MOTR rock music when there was a real sense of fun to a lot of their earlier stuff.
He's a big fan of highly technical guitar virtuoso wankery that nobody really wants to listen to.
1:52 Hot take: Blackfoot's Highway song is better than Free bird.
Your love for Alter Bridge made me smile so much. THANK YOU!
Also, Kim Thayil is severely underrated!
Best thing about Rage Against the Machine: *"Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"* (1992)
Worst thing about Rage Against the Machine: *"Fuck yeah, I will do what you tell me!"* (2020)
Muse has long been one of my favorite bands. Still my favorite band and likely always will be.
yeah i absolutely adore muse but recently especially the lyrics are kinda annoying and repetitive
@@emmyjemmy4208 i feel like some of their songs have moved towards a more “pop”-y genre, especially on WotP with Compliance. i still love em to death honestly, but it’s a very different style from the albums they released pre-2010’s.

In that bad thing about Nirvana, you lit just described Kurt perfectly 🤣
Foo Fighter is my favorite band and am furiously loyal. But I thought that take was super fair!
'39 is goated
@@Theprophet3928 You're absolutely right!
I wonder how many times you would have to listen to smells like teen spirit to reach that point... 30 years later and I still love it every time!
I can assure you that Journeys first album will surely please you regardless of wether you like 80s cheese or not. Seriously go check it out!
4:06 ngl, I started laughing when I first heard Tom Sawyer. That's so true
Queen’s negatives to me are the excess of pompousness and the lack of cohesion in their songs.
I think the lack of cohesion is a positive
The songs all have a distinct style to them because Freddie would get super bored if they did the same thing over and over.
Also the end of Cygnus XI on A Farewell To Kings.
Well I was really eager to hear what will be the worst thing about queen but as I expected there's nothing 😂
Same here
You should make a part two. Here are a few suggestions:
Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, The White Stripes, Royal Blood, The Strokes, Fleet Foxes, The Blue Stones, Tame Impala.
Once Freddy was being interviewed by a Korean journalist lady who asked "why you call band kooween", Freddy smiled and looked straight at the camera and said "next question"! It was great!
