    I've got a bottle of the 2021. I've never tasted Clonakilla before. I wasn't sure how long to keep it, as I heard it was a difficult vintage. I'll open it in 2033; see what happens.

      I’d open it next week and see if you like it, because your chances of replacing it are the best they’re ever going to be!

      @@erinlarkin I've opened it and I like it! You owe me $135 for a replacement bottle! 😀I found a bottle shop that stocks it, so I'll buy another bottle next week.

    Erin, I'm so glad to have discovered this channel. Over the last couple of years I've gone head first into wine and some of my favorite bottles have been Barossa and Clare Valley reds. I have a 2021 Clonakilla shiraz/viognier and I'm intrigued by your comments (here and in your RP notes) on its evolution and increased complexity over the course of a week. I don't want to wait 10 years to drink it. Should I open it a day or two before drinking? Or decant for multiple hours beforehand? What do you recommend? Thanks

    Another great video, thanks! Really appreciate the comments and explanations regarding the ‘age-worthiness’ of these wines. I’ve a few bottles of each vintage from 2005 to current, but will keep an eye out for some older ones now as well. Cheers 🍷🍷.

    Terrific video Erin as per usual. I recently picked up a 2013 at auction. Good to know it needs a few more years in the cellar to open up and show at its best.

      Great video! At the risk of being the pronunciation police, where are you getting the pronunciation of ‘viognier’ from? I coukd be wrong but believe it is pronounced ‘yAy’ not ‘yEr’. Anyway, have only had a few Clonikilla but yes they are elegant wines of remarkable consistency. Hugely jealous you had the opportunity to taste 1/2 dozen in one sitting!

    BRAVO & GRAZIE🍷 Such a great way to bring the last few tastings full circle! Also a very true thought & question at the end of the video…. New world produced wines haven’t been around as long when these are 50+ years old how will they drink ?! (I’m thinking pretty damm good) haha

    Interesting that this is one Aussie wine that has the most consistent 90 plus scores, regardless of vintage (excl 2011!), on Cellar Tracker. These are global palates, which says a lot about the greatness of Clonakilla SV.

    Thanks for the great video. Learning more everytime from your reviews. Can you explain a bit more about "quiet"? Is the length or fruit that is more subdued?

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Rex! When I say ‘quiet’, I mean that the fruit volume has been turned down. The structure and length both remain (which is why I say that the score has nothing to do with the quality of the wine, but is an indication of where it is right now), and these are two key elements of a wine that determine quality. In context with the other vintages, the 2013 was just a little subdued. Does that make sense?

    I loved the 2018 and have 5 left. It was a lighter style like the 2021 perhaps. Any thoughts on the 2018? How is it now - how much longer to keep?

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought several magnums of the 2018, and I can answer the question, but what I learned from this tasting is I would be safe opening it tomorrow, but equally, it would also be fine in 2042. I loved the 2021 as a young wine so there’s nothing lost from drinking these beautiful wines at any age.

    Dear Erin
    Many thanks again for a brilliant and insightful vertical. I have been purchasing the Clonakilla SV since the 2008 vintage after an epiphany on a Qantas flight with the 2006. A question, the 2011 from recollection was rated as a cool wet vintage - any comparisons to the 2021? How do you see the 2011 evolving, or should I drink my last 4 bottles? Kind Regards Mark

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mark, good question. As with all great wine around the world, the strength of a good producer will often triumph against the vagaries of a challenging season. I don’t know the rainfall numbers in 2011, but you are quite right, the east coast of Australia was beset with much rain that vintage. My suggestion would be, since you have four bottles, to open one and see how you feel about it, bearing in mind that the odds are stacked in favour of it presenting well. In short, I wouldn’t write it off. Let me know how you go - sounds a fascinating exercise. 🙏

    Hi Erin! Is the Shiraz Viognier uniquely Australian or does it have a spiritual home elsewhere? I lived in the US for awhile and when I explained that Sparkling Red was an Aussie favorite, a lot of my friends went mad for it. I paired it during Thanksgiving soirees with their Roast Turkey with all the fixin's. What is a good food pairing for Shiraz Viognier? Cheers!

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it depends on the style it’s made in! The Standish Relic is a full throttle style (pair it with bigger game/roast/meat), and that will pair very differently from that of Serrat or Clonakilla (much fined, look to tannic Pinot noir pairings)…. Good on you for recommending something idiosyncratically Aussie 💪🏼
