Kind of gone full circle, been using a helix lt as a pedal board for last couple of years (couldn’t fault it) - now heading black to analogue world and messing with some drive pedals. However, now I’m needing reverb, delays, modulation and I have been in a hunt for options. Then it dawns on me how much we take the helix for-granted. It can do so much and the price is unbelievable really when you compare the individual pedal prices of this quality. Thanks for this - my mind is made up HX Stomp ticks every box!

First John talked me into a Helix. Then he moved into the HX-Stomp, and I followed. I am so happy he has settled on these units as now I have more budget for guitar purchases.

There is nothing else, absolutely nothing else, at this price point that can do all of what this does at the quality it does. Modular, easy to use, I would say its the best piece of gear to come out in the last 10 years easily.

I totally agree, and have an HX Stomp myself. It is an unbelievably powerful device, and great value for the money. It has taken me a while to learn how to get the sounds that I wanted, but that is part of being such a powerful, tweakable device. I've heard many tone shootouts /blind tests with it against many great Amps, and in the hands of a skilled and experienced user, it can usually duplicate and even surpass them in tone and flexibility. In those tests, my favorite "Amp" usually turns out to be the HX Stomp!
If you're having trouble getting your HX Stomp to do or sound or feel like what you want, there are many Channels and users on TH-cam who know the solutions and who are happy share them. John is a great example of that, and as users, we're fortunate to have access to such excellent resources.
There is a great Channel called "Sonic Drive Studio" in which there are many comparisons/demos of Real Amps, and them compared to Modelers. As it would happen, today there is a new video on the Channel doing just that. You can hear a Real Amp and IR's compared to the same IR's on Helix Native, and Fractal FM III. Impressive, to say the least. Everything is impeccably recorded on the Channel, and you can easily how awesome everything sounds. The video is called "OwnHammer Is BACK Baby! Sounding GOOOOOOD! (412 RECT Essentials!)"

I think it’s a super interesting point. I think it’s more, the weird boutique world people that leaves Line 6 out of the conversation as effects.
Line 6 is an incredible company with so much legacy to them. As Ive said before, nothing comes close to the HX Stomps price point. It punches far above its weight.

I have had a Stomp for more than a year now, and it gives me one big BIG problem. I have a pedal-sized spot on my board and no clue what to put there. Every time I look to add something I think, "but the stomp does that so well." I've turned down the notion of blooper and habit and even the Microcosm because I get similar sounds out of the stomp. It is, as they say on your side of the water, a great piece of kit.

By far the best bang for the buck gear for me. I've bought more than a few pieces of gear based on your recommendation, the Stomp being the first. Running that into my little Bugera V5 with a JET Pedals MCX is probably all I'd ever need as a bedroom guitar hero. There's just soooo much in it. The pedals, the effects, the amps. It's a bit overwhelming, but I think of it as having my own guitar store where I can try everything, and they won't throw me out.

I was inspired to get a Stomp from your channel! Initially, I was underwhelmed because it was a lot of work to menu dive and program my own settings. I bought some of your presets and then found they didn't sound so good through my gear (likely due to different guitars, different playing style, and different monitoring system, etc...)... But no worries there. It was a good way to see your approach to how you set things up and a great learning tool and the presets were super affordable. I was able to tweak things to work with my equipment.
I've since been spending a lot of time coming up with my own presets. I started out slow with amps I'm familiar with but have since branched off to other amp models I'm not familiar with. The 2204 Mod is awesome for Marshall-ey high gain sounds as is the Archetype and Angl Meteor. The Archetype clean is awesome for Fender-ey clean tones. Anyways, this is a great device and if you're willing to spend the time with it, you can get some amazing sounds from it!

As someone who mainly plays at home, but who sometimes plays out, what lured me to invest in an HX Effects (and then an HX Stomp XL in Line 6's recent refurb sale) is Helix Native. When you own any of the HX/Helix hardware, Helix Native is available for 1/4 of its usual price (and I got it with a further 30% discount during a Line 6 sale). You can work in-the-box, and then take those exact tones to a gig on the HX hardware when the time comes. -Tom

@@levijessegonzalez3629 $600, which is also about the going rate of a used one on Reverb (and they also offered refurb regular HX Stomps). If you get on Line 6's email list, you'll get notified of their sales. They have sales pretty often, but only occasionally do they have refurbs in the HX series. They also had a $100 XL discount for about a month over the summer, which basically made it the same price as a regular HX Stomp. I suspect they'll have some kind of Helix/HX special offer for black Friday/cyber Monday.

@@levijessegonzalez3629 Well, FWIW, every time there's been a discount or refurb offer from Line 6 on the HX stomps in the last year or so (while I've been waffling about the purchase), I've checked prices vs. Reverb, and the discounts have been with $30 - $50 of the used price for sales on new units, and comparable to the used price for refurbs. I've been surprised at how strongly the HX Stomp units have maintained their value on the used market. HX Effects may be somewhat different. I got my HX Effects during a $100 off sale (available from all authorized resellers; I used Sweetwater) back in 2019 when the full street price was $600. Today the street price is $650, and in fact right now Line 6 is offering a $100 discount. So the discounted price is significantly above the used price you are seeing. If I remember right, the refurb prices on the Stomps were about $50 below the prices during $100-off sales. So I don't think you'll see a refurb HX Effects as low as the used number you're seeing. Just a guess, though.

Had the same fear before I got mine. What I did is just have it do one job for you at first, like what ever the primary goal of getting the Stomp is, have it just do that for a while. Then the more you play it and more you find other needs, the more you’ll find that you already have that need met by the stomp.
I initially just wanted all my modulations combined and wanted it to sound better than the Mobius. It did that for me, but after that each time I wanted another pedal, the Hx Stomp either met the need (EQ, midi controls, reverse delay) or defeated the challenger (Iridium, DD-500, RV-500, etc.).
So it likely will be worth it for whatever you need it for, and it very well could become more valuable to you as you roll on

For jams and things, I will still bring out my Carrs or my Morgans, but for situations where reliability and consistency are key, I switch on the HX Stomp (which has been a mainstay on my board since I got it in early 2020) and use that straight into the desk. I've been doing my research for years. I finally found an HX stomp XL for sale in my area. One of the best purchases I've ever made. If you took everything out of this pedal and sold them separately, the price would be outrageous. Not to mention how much of a pain it is to actually deal with the shortcomings of a pedal board (wiring, power, loud pops, signal path too long, picking up AM radio waves). This thing works cohesively and professionally. If you need more, be honest, you're greedy lol.

I had the chase bliss meris automatone reverb for a while and sold it after I realised I could dial any of the sounds in just as well with the HX. Still doesn't stop me buying drive pedals to stick in the front of the Stomp! Hope I'm not too late to the party. Those of you new to processors, this is for you. Like John, I own multiple GP's, and like John, maybe I should start selling some of these, and like John, I'll never sell a particular piece of hardware, my Roland GP-8. It may be the only fully functional GP-8 in existence from what I have seen from local buy and sells. But what I want to say, anyone who purchases a guitar processor, should commit and stick to it. The more complex the GP, the more time you will need to really understand how to get the tones you are looking for. And if you are like me, a songwriter, and I have been for over 45 years, some tones are truly inspirational. And there are a ton of resources online to help you with any GP you buy, and not just TH-cam, the are also Facebook groups where there are many out there willing to share their experience and knowledge. Last point, not all GP's are made equal. By this, I mean some are a better fit for the style of music you play. And for the record, I currently bounce between my GT-100 and my GT-1000, and I usually use my Laptop and software to set up my tones, etc. As I am always busy, found this approach a far more efficient use of what free time I get. Last point, thank you John, love watching you play. I will still work on writing my rock songs but I see by your playing, I need to get back to my roots, the blues, where every modern style of playing you hear today came from.

Your playing is fantastic John, congrats. I want to love the HX Stomp, as the interface and layout is brilliant. I don't use amp modelling at all, I play a Chapman Stick with mainly clean sounds, so I use EQ and time-based effects primarily. The HX family (like its POD predecessors) allow for dual signal routing, which is ideal for the dual outputs on my instruments. These are really popular with Chapman Stick players. The problem that I'm having is getting the basic tone just right. I'm talking about the sound I get through the HX without any effects or EQs engaged. I've tried everything (I think), from adjusting the input impedance to changing the line/instrument settings. Even with various EQs (global, parametric etc). there's an inherent issue with the tone I'm getting. It's hard to describe, but compared to my other multi-effects unit (different brand), the sound lacks some "sparkle", and is just a little dull sounding. It almost sounds to me like there could be some "modelling" going on, but everything is switched off. Do you have any thoughts on why this is happening?

Regarding getting excellent sounds out of the HX Stomp, this is what I discovered. Recently, I learned that all the Line 6 Helix Cabs are defaulted to a High Cut setting of 8kHz. Many REAL Speaker Cabs have a steep frequency slope that drops off at around 5kHz. A real Celestion Greenback G12M for instance has a basic "Frequency Range of 75-5,000Hz." Utilizing the Real Cab Speaker Frequency Responses in my HX Stomp CAB Blocks has made dialing in authentic sounding Amp tones a lot easier and faster. It also makes dialing other Blocks and Parameters a lot easier. Another Parameter that makes a huge difference in getting a good sound is selecting an appropriate Mic in the CAB Block for the sound you're going for. Hope this helps those who've had trouble with their Line 6 Helix Presets sounding too bright, harsh, thin, and not feeling "real" enough, etc.

The sounds out of the HX aren't terrible by any means, but I don't enjoy them as much as a really good Kemper profile. Extra points to the HX for being much more attainable and affordable though haha

My only major complaint about the stomp is that it's noisy in 4 cable method. For some reason the FX loop just adds noise. And the DAW latency could be a bit better when used as an interface. apart from that it's an insanely complete bit of kit for a fantastic price, and the fact that it qualifies for the 75% helix native discount just adds to thag

I've got a HX Effects and Helix Native software and I love both. But I started out with Boss pedals long ago in the late '70s and I just love their overdrives. I've got the Boss GT-1, GT-001 and the GT-100. The delays are very nice and I particularly love the high-pass filter function on them. One day I'll get the GT-1000 Core and probably also a HX Stomp. Line 6 and Boss have their respective strengths and are both awesome.

I have a similar sense just wth the pod Go, though the thing that really lets me down from Line6 is their broken swell block. Then again i may have to be grateful for that bcos it forced me to get a EHX Attack Decay, which tops all of those (Slow Gear etc) - just not vry compactly. I do think imma gonna end up with a Stomp XL eventually though - the number / category of blocks on pod go often have me a bit frustrated

If you have an amp (or two or more) you like, then I'd highly recommend the HX Effects. It works great with all my amps, in front or 4CM, with or without MIDI. I have presets for different guitars and amp combinations I use most.
    Cheers!

I’ve been a fractal user for years with most of my gear schizophrenia surrounding FRFR (various) vs guitar cabs, tube amps vs modeling, w/d vs w/d/w vs stereo and on and on. I presently have a FM3 as well as a AxeFx3 Turbo. I like the idea of the UI but have become proficient with navigating fractal product hardware UI with the software editor being a super bonus for ease of editing. To me, at $1K vs $600 USD, it doesn’t seem like it’s a price issue with regard to why to go Helix stomp. I think you have both. What compels you toward the stomp vs fm3?

After way over a decade of not having pedals or anything (relying on VSTs, iPad and Laptops), I finally decided to get a modeller. Since budget is kinda tight, I was aiming for the HX Stomp. Then, I remembered I had a Variax and went for the LT - let's hope I didn't make a mistake? *praying* LOL I am actually terrified !

I totally agree and its the reason I bought one. However, for me in a live setting, I prefer a SA Collider because I dont have to deal with menus when I need to change something mid song/ quickly. The search for an all in one with quick UI continues for me at least!

Hi John, this has got me interested in a purchase but i’m torn between the stomp and the HX effects. Given the amp/cab/ir’s sound a bit iffy on the stomp (from opinions) … maybe the HX effects? I’m happy with my amp tone. (I had the HX floor & found it toooo fiddly!). Cheers.

I went for the Boss GT1000 core over the Stomp as I already have a Helix LT and a HXFX. To throw a stomp in ze mix would just be redundant.
I control the Boss GT1000 core with midi using the HXFX, and the screens on the HXFX makes this easy, and I get some remarkable results.
But I am basically just using the Helix LT all the time now tbh.
My super expensive, super powerful HXFX, Boss GT1000 core rig with a heavy duty EV30 Boss expression pedal in the proper BCB 90x Boss case, is beautiful, portable, but is just gathering dust.
A monument not to be so infuenced by TH-cam.

Hey John, I'd like to see you playing a Headrush MX5, and, even more if you compare it with the HX.
I'm trying to buy one of those and where i live, the price of one MX5 new is similar to an HX used.

    • @mannyquinn8301
      @mannyquinn8301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Don't get the Headrush MX5 instead of the HX Stomp. The HX is a far superior unit. The multi-tasking switches alone are enough of a reason to choose the HX. If you really want one of these "do it all pedals," get the HX. Need it to be a switcher/midi controller as well? Get the XL. Ask me anything, I'll try to help but don't spend your money on the Headrush.

  • @Jeb_binch

I’ve thought about getting an HX Stomp and your videos have had a lot to do with that. However over the past year I’ve been accumulating pedals for the effects that feel most “like me” and got to five and can’t think of anything else I really need from effects at this point, as I really am just learning to use them. Price wise I’m probably still coming in just under a new HX Stomp so from that standpoint I’m not too worried about it but part of me also feels like I’m leaving something in the table in terms of possibility. For now I’m trying not to think too hard about it and I’ll just see if what I have sparks any joy and then revisit the issue. Lord knows there’s enough to explore for me now just on the fretboard.

Hi, John! I have a question about the HX Stomp, and I think you might be the right guy to answer it. Can I use the HX Stomp in the fx-loop of my amp, then split the signal internally so one signal goes to FOH with power amp and cab sim, and the other signal continues into my power amp, through the speaker? Best regards, Jørgen

    • @johnnathancordy

That's not how I run it so not sure? The HX Effects has a bit of a different UI, and like you say doesn't have Amp models or Cab models (but can run IRs) - personally I'm using the amp just to get stage volume, the Stomp is the important part that runs to FOH etc
