I always thought that the Juliet bird (22:59) being voiced by a male was a clever nod to the Shakespearean-era practice of having men play the roles of women on stage.
99% of what I want from a 'remake' is just the ability to pay an older game on a console that isn't currently in the loft. Really I just want backwards compatability to be the norm..
@@karlcabaniya5317 Yep, that's why I put 'remake' in inverted commas. Because what a lot of us really want from a remake isn't a remake at all, it's just the ability to actually play the game on the consoles we now own
As someone who played the original Spyro and Crash trilogies religiously, both your videos on the remasters completely nailed how I felt about them, good and bad. I am especially happy that you pointed out Spyro: Reignited's issues with color and lighting in this video. It's something I had noticed back in pre-release screenshots but had seen few if anyone mentioning it. I felt it noticably meddled with the tone and atmosphere of levels in a way I was disappointed with.
The problem with remasters is that older graphics and sound design can be extremely charming in their own right. In my opinion this is a soul-crushingly hard hurdle to get over, if not downright impossible. How is someone suppose to completely redesign something to look new yet also keep it "exactly" the same?
Spyro 1 remake - near perfect Spyro 2 - a few challenges are kinda...ruined? Also a little more glitchy Spyro 3 - flat out stopped playing due to how many glitches I got. Spyro 3 is simply not finished or polished to a satisfactory level. It feels rushed. Also, this is the best video I've seen about this game. Good to see someone go in-depth
Didn't a certain Hideo Kojima say something about not doing the same thing twice? Looking forward to Death Stranding. At least being beaten over the head with acknowledging the failings of the modern era is better than wallowing in the failings of the modern era
I never really played the originals but I definitely picked up on that inconsistency when it came to character models as I got into the second game in the franchise. A lot of the NPCs started looking kinda lifeless and cookie cutter which was disappointing to me because the first game had such a beautiful and consistent artistic direction. I think they may have blown their load a bit on lovingly animating every single dragon with a unique design and personality in the first game. Also, they really should've made the gems a bit larger. The foliage in this remaster is beautiful but it's obnoxious to have to backtrack for a gem I missed because it was buried in the grass, when with the original's flat textures said gem would be lying in plain view as a breadcrumb to guide you through the level
I really agree with you using summer forest as a benchmark, as such I think removing the unintelligible writings on the walls was a big mistake because it really gave the level a sense of mystery, as if you were visiting some arcane idyllic world from the past.
I'll admit, when I saw this in my recommended videos, I was sort of cautious to watch it - it's hard to tell which videos are going to be genuinely well-thought out reviews and which are going to be awful cynical video essays with poor faith arguments all over the shop. The original Spyro trilogy have always been incredibly important games to me and Spyro 3 is my all-time favourite game, it's something I still play at least like once a week. So naturally, Reignited was a pretty big deal, but I'm not blind to its flaws - I was actually pretty disappointed with the product as a whole and I was left with some really mixed opinions. This video, I felt, summed up a lot of what I took issue with in the game, and it felt like a really careful analysis of those problems rather than the much more unfavourable poor faith approach a lot of people seem to be taking in analysis videos. Overall just a really great video.
3D Platforming Lifestyle I'm not talking about Reignited specifically, I'm talking about video essays on TH-cam in general. That being said I've definitely seen more than just "hype" for the game, there has been a strong critical response to the games, opinions seem to be quite mixed. If you want an example of a "poor faith argument" - where the criticism stops being helpful or constructive - then one hypothetical example may be a person who ignores the game's positives in favour of focusing on the negatives in order to depict the game as solely negative. I'm really critical of the game myself but I think part of me fears that criticisms that reduce the game to its flaws might result in a more uncertain future for Spyro.
Guess it could have done with some of the "It's done when it's done" treatment. But hey, can't have that. Corporate deadlines and budgets take precedence.
@@wile123456 Considering most of what these games are banking on is mass nostalgia it genuinely doesn't matter when it gets put out and on top of that it's not like there's a limited supply, it's a digital product, it'll be sitting on the store until the technological apocalypse. Or the console it's on gets forced into obsolescence by the company. White knighting for corporations is stupid, don't do it.
@@QuestionableObject games sell the most in the holiday quarter, that's a fact. Kids games especially, these games bank on nostalgia but they also want a new audience. The only good solution was to have said "coming 2019" instead of 18 in the reveal. Everybody loses their minds over delays especially if they are too long.
@@wile123456 The game will still be there for the Holiday quarter, even if they released it right after the game would still be on the store come next year and all they really need to do is advertise it for the 'selling season'. Get it on the front page of the PS-Store, get some ads put around the place. Same effect as releasing it on the season just you have a fully polished product rather than something shoved out the door with some pink in the middle.
@@wile123456 or you know, they could have released it for the holidays of next year, and not announce it for a date that needed to be delayed anyway... People are complaining about delays, not long wait, because in the end, we're always waiting for something, we just dont know what until its announced, and if we expect it to come one day but then its delayed, thats when people arent happy. Remaking 3 games that were made in 3 years in just 1 year and making them better in every aspect just isn't realistic, toys for bob and the other studios did their best, so the only one to blame here is activision, and I don't really see why you would defend them but sure I guess EDIT: just read your second comment, and yeah actually I basically agree with you, sorry I was responding the first one
i absolutely agree. it's a shame... because the third game is the one i remembered most vividly, but it also has the most bugs. i was really looking forward to the fly to another level sequences in it and they sadly have been rushed... unlike the first game magnificent landings
Holy shit, you're right. I'll admit, I kind of go back and forth on the opinions discussed in your N. Sane Trilogy video and whether or not they're real deal breakers, but this was just spot on. I loved this and couldn't agree more.
Personally, I think there is no debate the N. Sane dramatically improved the original game. But for the other two, I'm not so sure. That's also pretty much how I feel about the Spyro games, come to think of it.
A genuinely personal and soulful analysis of something near and dear. The piece at the end talking about how these old icons have had their day but left an open platform for brand new ideas honestly struck quite a chord with me. You make some good videos man, keep it up.
The only two points I have are this: 1. Sgt Byrd's missiles DID hone onto enemies in Year of the Dragon for PS1; the honing was just stronger in Reignited. 2. There's one huge problem with the controls that you didn't mention: the hovering in Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon doesn't work if it's attempted immediately after a jump. It takes about a half a second before you can hover once you start gliding, so very short distance glides with a hover usually result in Spyro stopping in mid air to fall.
I'd like to point out that Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection was 45 GB and this game requires 70 fucking GB. This is unacceptable. Why do I need to delete 3 games on my PS4 for THIS. And what the fuck is up with the disc only containing 1/3 of the actual game. This better not become the new god damn norm.
Would be nice if new games just had unlocks for the original versions. Buy a new re-envisioned Tomb Raider, comes with a playable ROM of a classic Tomb Raider. That sort of thing.
Fantastic video I'd almost honestly say was betrayed by the title. I saw this in my feed, and not knowing your content I kind of expected it was coming from a guy that didn't quite get this genre well or knocked the nitpicks up 100X fold. I was finally bored enough to give it a chance, and holy crap, this is one of the best reviews I've seen on the game ever. Its a fantastic game in itself, and a lot of what you went over shown even more respect for it than even major fans are. Some great tuning, awesome artists, etc. Still it isn't without its faults, and yeah, it doesn't replace the classics and the team (and publisher) could do pay a little more attention to how these things are supposed to work. Classics don't get replaced, even if the ideal remake is supposed to outdo them. ...still, they could do the best they can to further blur any divides, and Reignited could burn a little brighter. I'm also so glad I'm not the only one a bit bothered by the Guidebook thing, I mean come on, its right in the cut-scene you spend some serious time on guys!
Finally a review of this game I can almost fully agree with. One of the jokes ruined for me in the translation was Hunter's "Well, I tried" line. It just didn't work in the remake. Also, some of the mini games including whack-a-mole were less enjoyable without the isometric camera giving me a better view.
If anything the only thing that bothered me the most.. is after playing the originals so many times.. the voice acting in Reignited was just a little.. off, it sounds like the actors weren’t really into their parts and just spit out lines 😕 just me maybe.
That's one thing that always surprised me about PS1 era games looking back. Western titles always had astounding voice talent, which helps when basically everything had Clancy Brown in it!
I will always prefer the original trilogy for Spyro as much as Crash. EDIT: Surprised there was no mention of enemy sounds. Original Spyro had some satisfying sound effects and voices. Notable examples include the bucket slugs at Breeze Harbour (*clang* Urrrrrgh!) or the gecko fodder in Midnight Mountain (*slight crunch* Wack?!) Reignited goes for more generic noises all around.
I doubt even Sucker Punch themselves could effectively clean up the mess of a story that Sanzaru left behind in Sly 4. I'd much rather see a remake of the trilogy than see The Cooper Gang dragged further into the trash-fire that Sanzaru created
Sly 4. Not Sly 5. There was absolutely nothing redeeming about Sly 4 that wouldn't be better applied by mining it for its missed potential. (I'm sorry, but yes I'm still angry.) Though echoing and mutating the point MsBrendalina made, I'm not quite sure how even Sucker Punch could continue the story from Sly _3._ Random mention of time machines besides, that game ended in a way that was perfectly wonderful as an ending, and really would make threading the needle between "getting things back enough to the status quo to actually have a game" and "invalidating everything that happened before" in a sequel difficult. I do think it could be done, but it's a _hard_ problem.
I also wanna add another issue I had with the cutscenes in this game. The music, in the OG classics, you get the classic Spyro music composed by Stewart Copeland, and it wasn't just a re-use of any of the levels, they had their distinct tracks. Sometimes you hear a little guitar or bass building the tension, like when Ripto retreats from Glimmer. But in the Reignited Trilogy, we didn't get that unique tone of music that makes us all think of Spyro right away, we get the most generic, disney/fantasy music you can expect in any family cartoon.
100% agree on the color and stylized forms part. They perhaps leaned a bit too far into realism, though still looking fantastic. I'd love to see what they can do for their own Spyro game
On one hand I love these remasters/reboots/remakes the industry puts out, but on the other hand I always feel like it’s a seemingly insurmountable task to bottle a similar lightning captured so well by the originals. Too bad the industry also hates emulation so much, making us crave the R/R/R meal announced before us so that we look forward to literally anything with our favorite forgotten-hero-of-a-bygone-era’s name on it. Also the fact that nostalgia sells incredibly well doesn’t help the issue either. Give us the means to play the classics in a modern era without witch-hunting those (emulator creators/ROM sharers) who make it possible, while also making a new game with a given IP if you must. Thanks for the video B-Mask, you don’t upload often but whenever I see that you do, or just see you in general like lurking in someone else’s comment section, it is always a splendid sight!
Industry has to consider liscences when getting the games, so for them it's not as simple as "get the rom and throw it on the store". That's why it took Sony a good 3-4 years in the PS3 era to get most of the PS1 classics up. And even then, stuff like Disney PS1 games just don't want to budge for whatever reason. At that point, a remaster/remake may seem more feasible in terms of attracting a new generation and getting around some annoying liscences. But yeah, the "new game" conundrum is weird. Maybe it is just selling on nostalgia, but these remakes aren't that much easier to make than a full new entry. Especially not in packs of 3.
THE BEST they were still pretty amazing though. And much better than the originals. Of course they should be, and they definitely were in every way imaginable.
It would be wonderful to see a new Spyro game by these developers! Of course, I didn't have a whole lot of experience with the originals. Having only played the third (or maybe the second), and not to completion, I'll probably pick up the reignited trilogy at some point when I get the chance.
I feel the Reignited trilogy could have been more polished. Idk how they'll feel about patching the remaster but they should consider at least tweaking things. We should definitely hold remasters/remakes to a higher standard, reignited came out wonkey and with odd changes. I did however enjoy the game beit the first spyro game had you be absolutely pixel perfect with jumps. It's a nostalgia out of 10. Wish they kept the separate menu intros though.
On an actual related note. I have so many conflicted feelings on these remakes. In so many areas they knock it out of the park, but in so many different aspects they miss by a mile. I feel Spyro 1 benefited the most from the additions. Tightening some of the odder gameplay elements and while some of the levels lose there more dream like qualities the added detail and geography does wonders. Spyro 2 is when things start to get shaky. Though, over all I will say it still has some nice improvements. But cracks start to show with the dev team. The turtle soup challenge is when I noticed the team valuing uniformity over if the camera was put there for the reason. The orb thieves being another example. The funny thing with the lightning orb thieves is that I actually don't think that is from wanting to make it easier. Rather I think it's from programming errors etc. The thieves don't ever leave, and the orbs randomly duplicate themselves. It reeks of the team just porting the challenge in without actually adjusting it for the new engine. Something that gets FAR worse in Spyro 3. If Spyro 1 remake is finished and Spyro 2 suffers from some questionable choices, than Spyro 3 is straight up unfinished. During my Playthrough of Spyro 3 there was this air of...jankyness that was hard to shake off. Not just the glitches, but the character animations models weirdly snapping in place and characters control It less feels like something that has been play tested and more something that got to work and just shipped it out. You can feel it the most with Sheila and Bentely. Sheila air control is slightly better than the original game, but her ground control is mirsiable, it feels like you are dragging her along by a leash. Bentely suffers from just an awkward camera. It makes it feel like Toy for bob went "Why didn't Bentely always have this type of Camera?" only to present us with this and make us realize why Insomiac didn't go for it. The Mole mini game being another reason. Which is a damn shame since Spyro 3 was the remake I was interested in the most. I have always had mixed feelings on the game. And considering these remakes made Spyro 1 up there with Spyro 2 along with my favorites seeing Spyro 3 barely fix any of my gripes with the game (Agent 9 and Srgt Bryd play better, but that's about it) makes it feel like the weakest of the trilogy. Sorry for the long ass rant.
You really knocked this one out of the park. I've noticed all the issues you've mentioned and Spyro 3 killed it for me. I got 100% in 2 and had a great time with it apart from one game breaking bug and some of the classic music not looping seamlessly. YotD felt completely wrong though. I disagree that the flight controls are better. They're drifty in the remake, making sharp turns very unresponsive and controlling Spyro after he goes through a blue boost star a complete nightmare. I noticed the superspeed tracks making Spyro build up speed that surpasses the thieves speed also, as well as the thief in Molten Crater running straight into the wall if you ran the wrong direction. Also had the bug in Enchanted Towers where Farley gets stuck up on that ledge. But the worst offender of the entire thing is the CAMERA. I gave up when it got to the Spooky Swamp bomb challenge, where the camera doesn't zoom out. Same thing happened with the Icey Peaks skating too. Sgt Bird flying through the lava tunnel and the camera pointing downwards was another one. And what the hell is with that awkward over-the-shoulder view in Bentley's stages? On top of all the mechanical issues, everything you said about the colours, animations and voice acting irked me also, though i couldn't put my finger on what was bothering me until you said it. Also the Fracture Hills fawns are Irish, given that it's a celtic themed level. I don't think it was supposed to be specifically Scottish, otherwise they probably would have stereotyped it with ginger hair and kilts.
They did have kilts, if I remember correctly, and bagpipes are Scottish, not irish. And the red hair stereotype is for irish, not Scottish FYI. So nope, scottish. Og elora would be the closest to irish, give she actually had red hair.
I replayed Spyro earlier this year, watched this video, and then recently wanted to play Spyro again so I got Reignited so at least it'd be different and I totally agree. It's really inconsistent in a way that's so off putting. Some levels felt like way more effort went into them than others and I agree that "overthought" is a great word to use here. The first game definitely felt the most polished. My only complaint is sometimes it's overdesigned in a way that makes it actually harder to find gems and secret areas, because they blend in more. I found myself backtracking way more often than I usually would in the originals.
As I start to think about it more, after we just had Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Crash N. Sane Trilogy and now with the announcement of the Trilogy Bundle and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, I'm starting to wonder if the publisher and/or developer are just treading some old ground for profit to relive our love for the games we grew up with. Nostalgia is quite big now as it was then (what with Disney's retreading their animated movies and turning them into live actions now) and it will possibly keep holding on till the near future. Remember, there are games out there that invoke the sense of nostalgia (A Hat in Time, Octopath Travaler, Undertale and the new Rayman games, for example) and we shouldn't have to be blinded because there is a remaster of an old game because our beloved PS4 couldn't perform backward-compatibility (something that Microsoft has achieved). While I myself do enjoy both trilogies, I'm left to wonder what direction Activision will be taking. Just keep remastering Crash and Spyro games because it makes the charts in the UK and the US? Of course, simple as. But how long will the effect last on us until we're left thinking if they're ever going to make a brand new Spyro/Crash game and starts the cycle of the franchise lying dormant all over again? Wasn't there a time where the creator of Spyro (Charles Zembillas) wasn't going to be credited in the trilogy? I recall when I was listening to Cheshire Cat Studios and that moment when they brought up the analogy of a rock band reunited together and performing their old songs live to an audience and you're left wondering "well, why haven't they written new songs yet?" That's just my take on things. Still holding hope for the new MediEvil tho and I'm waiting to see what goes on in development.
I recorded a looooad of gameplay whilst playing Reignited, hoping to make a big review video of it. After watching this, I couldn't even dream of crafting such a well written and put together video like this. Instant sub, great work!
As someone who really hated the art direction of N. Sane, I couldn't help but feel a lot better about how Spyro Reignited handled things. It's not perfect but it was a real step up over N. Sane. N. Sane to me had this really jarring look where they traded the 'kawaii' look of the originals for character models were super detailed and realistic which in turn just looked so out of place in environments that look like they're made of plastic.
Funny how you mention the "kawaii" look of the original Crash Bandicoot games, because they were actually redesigned for the Japanese audience to be _more_ "kawaii", I guess. (honestly I wouldn't call it a kawaii look but I see what you mean)
8:30 People who cope and dismiss valid criticism as "nitpicking" irritate me so much. The N.Sane trilogy absolutely _deserves_ to be ripped apart for those things you mentioned. The artstyle and texture work (especially the water effects) look downright amature. That's not even mentioning the stiff controls and bad jumping/hitboxes. What a gigantic missed opportunity that trilogy was. Glad to see I've found someone who agrees with me. 👍
I came into this video expecting to hate it but found myself agreeing with pretty much everything. I wish you'd mentioned Elora's face though; it felt really really uncanny to me, especially the sides of her mouth.
OMG, thank you! finally someone NOT sugar coating elora and saying she is BETTER than og, just because "ooooh! new and shiny equal better than old!". Not to mention elora looks almost NOTHING like a faUn and more like a faWn with a poor human wing, and plastic surgery to give a human nose and human shaped head! Elora was supposed to be like the land version of little mermaid, But on land, and instead of a fish tail, deer feet for ONLY the bottom. Plus with a attitude of a: sassy, straightforward, laid back, chill, leaderly tone, that doesn't take BS, basically she would be a more confrontational (Not TOO confrontational) version of Sally acorn from Sonic SAT-AM (TV show). Now, she is like a mix of ember from hero's tail (minus marriage part and as annoying voice), starfire from teentitans.... GO, and the negative aspects of star butterfly from "Star vs. The forces of evil", and mixed altogether with a LITTLE BIT of stereotypical ditsy air head girl, to male the new elora. I know not everyone sees the details that way and/or can pick up the changes, but if you truly and honestly focus, you can see the changes. I mean, people's excuse for her to be human is the hair, nose, and head shape (sometimes the even count the arms). By that logic, the sorcerers can be counted as human, for she has lipstick, a mole, human fingers with claws, and a somewhat human nose, or Sheila, with her somewhat human shaped upper half, her hair, her clothing, and etc. That's a bad excuse to claim she still has human in her. The fact she isn't human is made more prominent when you look at the satyrs, which ARE GOATS NOW, when they where only supposed to be a special male version of the fauns, but even the male fauns and females are less human now than ever! And then you people who use the fact the slightly played the game when they were younger (even though they could be lying), as a excuse to call themselves "fans", thus making their opinions and influence "valid" to the spyro fandom.
Zion the dragon lol, calm down. It looks fine. It’s not like cartoons are known for their anatomic accuracy anyway. The original looked really bland to me and unsettling.
@@expendableindigo9639 actually, he is pretty tame. Maybe you need to calm down? Atleast the old had an excuse for not looking so good. This new one looks atrocious and falls in sort of the uncanny valley. No, it doesn't look fine. The new one looks even more bland and unsettling to me.
@@dewithedragon7612 lol Telling Indigo to calm down when his reply was objectively the most tame of the three? I mean sure, maybe the old designs look better to you than the new ones, but translating that into a different graphical fidelity and arguably different art-style could've ended up as jarring or off putting to old and new fans alike. I would also imagine that the purpose of a remake would be to bring back old fans while still appealing to new people whom the developers would want to bring on to the franchise as new fans, so compromise is to be expected for both parties. As for Zion's last bit, saying that people who only played the game slightly, heard about it in the past or are simply interested in the concept aren't entitled to a valid opinion is counter-productive to the purpose of a fan base; a group of people who come together to express their interest and opinions on a thing that they enjoy enough to want to connect to other people with varying ideas. By the way, I should probably point out that I'm not even necessarily a Spyro fan per say other than the fact that I did kinda play the first 2 games when I was a kid only renting them from the video stores of old. Hell, I only really show interest in it because of its connection to old school Crash. I have no strong opinion for either argument, I'm just speaking objectively.
Yes, objectively by your standards, his is the most tame. Sure, the new would appeal to you, but it did put off a good portion of the old fans, not all mind you, but a good portion of the old fans. As for my last bit, all I said was the people who only played a little and use it to claim themselves as fans, not that their opinion wasn't valid or did I anywhere mention people who heard it in the past or like the concept, that's on you bud. I said just that small instant doesn't make you a fan, you may like the game, or played a little but in the past, but that doesn't instantly make you a fan. It takes a little more (as in playing the whole game as an example) than playing a little bit to call yourself a fan. But seeing as your one them who seems upset that I said that small feat alone of "you can't call yourself a fan because one tiny moment (that may or may not be true, or just an excuse to control the outcome of a game)" that got you to come out of your way to try to get on dewi for pointing the more obvious thing and to act cool, when your aren't seriously taking this serious, more as a joke to attempt to make yourself this "brave (*cough* white *cough*) knight" sure says alot about your statement, huh? Also, you seem to not know what a fan base really is to be a group of admirers of a certain subject that stay with that subject, usually from day one, and they tend to make sure things are, in videogame, movie continuity, and comic book cases, that most of the new stuff has a concistantcy to it, and remains for the most part faithful and error free. A real fan's job is to both praise and criticize both the original and new, and not be biased in anyway about the other. So, the other guy's statement about calming down just because the new was criticized and basically saying that the new is better all-around without critism, is actually the REAL one telling people who don't like everything that their opinions aren't invalid, not the guy who criticizes the game for it's flaws (IM(through logic, 1st amendment, true critic)O). FYI, I was never a spyro fan either, I was a SKYLANDER'S fan, the most hated "spyro" game in the franchise, yet I LOVED that series. It also helped me learn about TLOS series, which I grew to somewhat like, then I learned about hero's tail, and finally IF spyro, which I, before the spyro reignited was just announced, played FULLY, with it fresh on my mind, so It was ironic that the game got announced right after I beat the game. I was a 16 year old when I played, and I am a few years older now, so it's not Nostalgia that I notice the differences, it's the fact I like it when stories draw from real culture and taught it to younger kids, keeping it alive, and staying faithful to that culture. Using "It's just a game, it's not real" or "it's better because they don't look like muppets" is a lazy excuse to justify bad character design, a bit buggy game play, and irionic considering that the old game is it's(the "remaster" which is more close to a remake) SOUL purpose existance for existing is the old game. Plus, when you claim to be a "faithful remaster" of course it needs to look and act like the old, with at the MOST, it only gets a HD update with better animation, lighting, voice acting, etc. Not: dumbed down weapons, millienial trends, spineless females(in personality), half cartoony acting half wannabe real life, confused gang, somewhat cringe worthy game we got with spyro reignited, but I freaken love the game even with all it's faults. I love that toys for bob made this game under the amount of time given by Activision, and I like alot of the creative liberties save a few. I love most of the new voice acting, and love the remaining, that I getting ready to replay it all over again. Just because some calls out something that everyone else either sugar coats or is to afraid to admit the actual unpopular opinion, doesn't mean they are the ones who need to "calm" down. If anything, telling them to be quit, or saying that they have nostalgia because they dont agree with everyhing, is actually the ones devalidating other's opinions. Sorry if you see it otherwise.
Fan games do a much better job of capturing the look and feel of the originals, and yet there done with a smaller team, no budget, and can take as long as they want.
The fans don't have deadlines or publishers to worry about. They have all the time and passion to do things well. Developers have to work within publisher constraints and don't get to treat things as a passion project. People might be stuck working on something that they aren't a fan of and just need to get it done, the most passionate have limitations to work around and time limits to keep in mind. Its not a fair comparison really.
@@gamepro94z ah I see, I played the game months after release and I didnt know that was a newly added setting. It would have done my head in if I couldnt turn that off straight away! 😅
Imagine gliding into a whirlwind and instead of getting this funny awkward land on your stomach and forcefully being pushed upward, you just hop into it and go up head first with a silly look on your face like you've done it too many times. They killed every sense of Spyro being a young dragon.
@@ProfessorGroyper The only issues I can see are some character voices (mostly npcs) sounding generic, the remixed tracks sounding too soft which is not a big deal since I can toggle on the og ost, some minor bugs, and spyro 2 reignited removing the 'all moves' cheat Any miniscual detail like spyro's hovering animation not looking as childlike as the original is a non issue. I have never heard anyone else who talks about spyro ever say "Man remember hovering onto those whirlwinds? Those were the times" because it is that insignificant. Especially when the vast improvements made over the original are that great like the updated graphics, certain characters not looking like muppets anymore, smoother control, the ability to increase fps on pc,etc. Edit: I forgot to mention that there are a few characters I noticed looking worse than the original, and it's a small amount.
@@moesabally1502 I think the little details matter and it looks like people agree with me. Ever notice Spyro's idol expression is different over the 3 games? Ever notice that Hunter is kinda dumb and puts emphasis on the wrong syllables in words like "athlete"? They also ruined the personalities of every main character by making them too peppy and active. It's like watching a bad Dreamworks movie.
@@ProfessorGroyper People will call it nitpicking but the little details are what make something special imo. Sure people who didn't play the original won't notice but its all those details that add up to make the game so great.
I was watching the Batman Mask of the Phantasm video of this channel for the one hundred time, when this notification appeared on screen. Great use of Dvorak in the intro.
What you said at the end really made a lot of sense to me. The reason that a lot of these problems are so noticeable is because we have the original trilogy to compare them to. While making a new game requires a lot more work, I think having a newer experience would be much more gratifying than going through a game that I've already played 10 times and noticing all the things that they REMOVED from the original. Also the people who complain that people are being "too nitpicky" are the exact reason why these remasters are being made in the first place. As long as people are content with mediocrity, game developers will continue to squeeze money out of products that they already know are hits, and in 2060 we will be getting Spyro trilogy remastered 3X instead of Spyro 6 or 7 or whatever. The originals already exist, why not show us something new? I enjoyed Crash and Spyro remastered (because I already liked the originals) but I would have preferred it so much more if they had just released Crash 4 and Spyro 4.
I never understand how you elevate your final messages in these videos, they always feel like such a grand statement about so much more than just the sum of the video's parts. It's comfy as fuccccck. It's probably those saucy music choices throughout. Also you're a handsome lad
Based on the recent layoffs, I'm afraid if there is a new Spyro on the horizon, it will doubtlessly be a hampered product. I watched this video ages ago and only felt compelled to comment now based on the recent news, but yeah I gotta say I was kind of underwhelmed by Reignited, as someone who prefers 3 and 2 over 1 (in that order). It is as you said, the developers at Toys for Bob had ambition, but there was the crunch and corporate meddling that lead to a product that seems half-baked permanently, even if they did patch it. I wonder if anyone has thought of trying to create a fan patch for Reignited to fill in the myriad of gaps to at least make the rest of the games seem more consistent quality-wise to the first one? Not that it'd be an easy endeavor but it'd be a somewhat rewarding endeavor at least, if only to make Reignited feel true to the ambitions of the Reignited team, even if some ideas didn't land for us.
As a Spyro fan who loves both the original and remaster. I have to agree most of the points you brought up. I always felt there was something missing with the remaster that made the original loved. I know there will always be something different but they didn’t have to go far to change some of the things that didn’t need to be changed like Ripto’s voice. I have no idea why they told the original voice actor to make Ripto sound like a scrawny little bastard, in the original he sounded more calm yet menacing that was meant to be taken... you know... SERIOUSLY. I can see why this game looked rush and to be honest, that’s sad especially for my beloved game
speaking of remaking PS1 titles, any thoughts on that upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake (or rather thoughts on what Square wants to do with the remake in terms of the gameplay and visual presentation - and maybe on the production shenanigans that have plagued the game's development since its announcement)?
I have some thoughts. I'm excited as hell for it. I also know that Tetsuya Nomura clearly doesn't know how to manage a project with any degree of efficiency and I don't expect it to be finished any time soon or to have a necessarily clear direction.
@@burnout713 well, his focus is gonna be all in on FF7 remake now, for the first time in like.. 10 years, since Square has been putting him on multiple big projects at once.
But honestly I can't agree with you more about moneybags. I love his new voice in the reiginted trilogy and it's so much better than the original games as I always felt it was kind of weird that he had a British voice in the second game and an American voice in the third game. It just fits really well I think! Although I guess in the original games it was done to show what kind of character he was like. In ripto’s rage he seemed like he was more of a good guy and in year of the dragon he definitely acted more villainous towards Spyro. In the reignited trilogy you can’t tell the difference but in a good way of course.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say they were testing the waters to see if they can emulate the old style, so they could make a new one in that style. Here's hoping.
I do feel like a lot of the urgency was lost in the remakes. :( Everything is played off as laid back, a joke, or just way too lighthearted for what's going on.
I've been playing these games recently on a emulator since I wanted to know why people love these games so much...and I have to say it's really addicting
I must have played a more patched version of the trilogy, because those bugs you showed off from 3 never happened for me. Sheila was definitely more irritating, Bentley was more okay, and the glitch for sarge is fixed when switching to the passive camera(the active recognizes collision with the ceiling and panics, causing the bottom-up view). I do agree with the level art not being entirely up to snuff, some of them just felt smaller and less epic than how they felt in the originals. For the most part, though, I absolutely loved going back through these, and got my only three plats on PlayStation.
While I don't disagree with any of the points made here, we also got to consider that these guys made 3 games in essentially the timespan of 1. I'd love these games to be perfect too, but I feel like a tad bit of slack could be afforded to the team.
Not to be a dick, but as consumers that really isn't our problem. It's not our fault Activision rushed this project out the door and it's not our fault that these remastered games are, in quite a number of instances, simply not as good as the original source material.
thats the point tho, producers forcing game creators to make a better version of games that were made in 3 years in this time 1 year shouldn't happen, but sadly it will still happen since for activision this worked out just fine
Then they shouldn't have accepted the job if they can't do it right. We see this a lot where the producer pushes the developer to make shorter and shorter deadlines so they can get their sweet, sweet profits faster and end up pumping out worse and worse games. Games have been steadily declining for a while now and I'd say that this current generation is some of the worse trash we've ever seen.
For those curious, the song in the beginning is a remix of Dvorák's "New World" Symphony, movement IV. Idk who remixed it but it's for sure a remix of that
Man that bit about the Avalar home worlds... for me it's Stone Hill, but I had the exact same reactions. Previews: Eh... how did they make it look so small? Actual release: Holy s--- they nailed it. edit: And I'd agree with the voice acting thing. And Cloud Spires. And most of the other problems. My guess about the troubles was that Toys for Bob was not Insomniac (not meant as a knock, Insomniac is, or perhaps was*, a rare breed)... but eh, you make a fair point about outsourcing and Activision. Gah, this industry... * No, I'm going to go with is, if Spider-Man was anything to go by. They seem to need Sony though. Insomniac's non-Sony years really gave me respect for that publisher. Somehow they know how to manage their creatives, bringing the best out of them. I'm looking forward to MediEvil, though. That's one I missed back in the day. And Sly trilogy... what would you even do with it, in a remaster? The only thing I'd even want would be the ability to replay mission in Sly 2. Well, there was that fan-made remake of Dimitri's office that was pretty good, but I'd rather see that art style applied to a new game than backported to the old.
I played the original Ripto's Rage for the first time about 1-2 months before the remake came out and having a limited timespan to play the former only twice, I didn't initially understand what Gregg Berger was trying to do with Ripto's voice. I didn't hate it, but he always sounded bizarre and as if a foreigner had mastered how to phonetically pronounce words but still had to learn where to stress and how to space syllables. At first, I had a similar confusion with his performance in the remake as it revealed to me that the original recording's strange delivery was no misdirection and was entirely on purpose. I know that the two are very different, but I was left as puzzled as before and learned nothing. Then I got an idea, could both performances be impersonating cheezy B-movie villains? I kind of warmed up to them after that thought entered my mind. Who knows?
i agree with the majority of this video though maybe i just got lucky, but i didn't experience really any bugs when i played it on the pc version (other then having to limit my FPS to 130 so the sliding bug doesn't occur) for me, the remaster has completely replaced the originals
The small number of bad changes (like shrek gnorcs and shit Sheila) make me rage. And not allow this version to be definitive. Also, good on Sanzaru for finding some more work. They deserve the money.
I know that 1 was pretty much done, while 2 and 3 were essentially in pre-pre-alpha stage and were barely playable, a few months before the eventual release date. Other companies were invited to finish the games as fast as humanely possible. And speaking of sloppy, I see you are a-okay with concept artist putting his buff dudes (not calling it by the japanese word) fetish into 1, ruining many dragon designs for me (but not you as I see).
It's not the Sly 3 review I was hoping for, but I am glad to have another amazing video of yours to watch! Outstanding content! Eagerly awaiting the Sly 3 review video because they are absolutely brilliant and heartfelt tributes to an amazing franchise. Can't say enough positive things about your work. Glad to see you're still around!
I always thought that the Juliet bird (22:59) being voiced by a male was a clever nod to the Shakespearean-era practice of having men play the roles of women on stage.
As a child I thought it was two guys. XD
You are far more cultured than the rest of us swine LOL
I played the remaster without ever playing the remaster and seeing the original, yeah they totally killed that joke.
Nah they totally just did that for laughs
We’re going to get letters about this

Spyro 1 remake - near perfect
Spyro 2 - a few challenges are kinda...ruined? Also a little more glitchy
Spyro 3 - flat out stopped playing due to how many glitches I got. Spyro 3 is simply not finished or polished to a satisfactory level. It feels rushed.
Also, this is the best video I've seen about this game. Good to see someone go in-depth
I got lucky as hell with my playthroughs of Spyro 3 RT. Maybe one glitch in 5 playthrougha
I platinum Spyro 3
I platinumed the 1st and 3rd Spyro games on ps5.
i wanted to complete whole trilogy 100% and got softlockd at the end of Spyro 3 :)

I am SO glad someone's finally saying these things instead of the constant stream of gushing praise I've been seeing everywhere else.
Yes god I love this game but damn do some things seem a bit off
I never really played the originals but I definitely picked up on that inconsistency when it came to character models as I got into the second game in the franchise.
COME AND BUY A PIXELIZER

I really agree with you using summer forest as a benchmark, as such I think removing the unintelligible writings on the walls was a big mistake because it really gave the level a sense of mystery, as if you were visiting some arcane idyllic world from the past.
the "OH HELLO THERE!" cut absolutely destroyed me
Sly 3 sure looks different to how I remember it...
Still waiting for sly 3 retrospective:(
ikr it looks the same as spyro. weird
Missing the holiday window would have destroyed the games sales. And fans like you would complain to the moon if it got delayed by a year
@@wile123456 Considering most of what these games are banking on is mass nostalgia it genuinely doesn't matter when it gets put out and on top of that it's not like there's a limited supply, it's a digital product, it'll be sitting on the store until the technological apocalypse.
Or the console it's on gets forced into obsolescence by the company.

Remaking 3 games that were made in 3 years in just 1 year and making them better in every aspect just isn't realistic, toys for bob and the other studios did their best, so the only one to blame here is activision, and I don't really see why you would defend them but sure I guess

As an Aussie you both have my hatred and respect for that.
Also 14:46 that got a great laugh out of me.
i absolutely agree. it's a shame... because the third game is the one i remembered most vividly, but it also has the most bugs. i was really looking forward to the fly to another level sequences in it and they sadly have been rushed... unlike the first game magnificent landings
Why does Gnasty have demotivational posters all over his place? This _certainly_ won't feel outdated and stale after some time...
A genuinely personal and soulful analysis of something near and dear. The piece at the end talking about how these old icons have had their day but left an open platform for brand new ideas honestly struck quite a chord with me. You make some good videos man, keep it up.
I agree with your sentiment about just moving on. I'd rather see new games with new ideas/art direction than endless remakes. Good video.
The only two points I have are this:
The hovering was one of the biggest problems for me, so many jumps that used to be simple turned out to be rather annoying.
That is the dumbest thing ever the voice acting in the older games are so bad you are obv nostalgia blind
Angel Gonzalez Geez guy, let the man have his opinion
I will always prefer the original trilogy for Spyro as much as Crash.
EDIT: Surprised there was no mention of enemy sounds. Original Spyro had some satisfying sound effects and voices. Notable examples include the bucket slugs at Breeze Harbour (*clang* Urrrrrgh!) or the gecko fodder in Midnight Mountain (*slight crunch* Wack?!) Reignited goes for more generic noises all around.
I miss the noises the Ninja Rhynocs would make as well as as the evil snowman when you're melting them
not to mention how they RUINED Buzz's sound design.
>Sly Trilogy is perfect
I agree. But like you mentioned before with Spyro.
Why not a Sly 5.
I think Spyro has more to say.
I think Sly was DONE with 3.
(I'm sorry, but yes I'm still angry.)
Though echoing and mutating the point MsBrendalina made, I'm not quite sure how even Sucker Punch could continue the story from Sly _3._ Random mention of time machines besides, that game ended in a way that was perfectly wonderful as an ending, and really would make threading the needle between "getting things back enough to the status quo to actually have a game" and "invalidating everything that happened before" in a sequel difficult. I do think it could be done, but it's a _hard_ problem.
The fault of sly 4 was they tried to do everything of the old games, without anything new and without doing anything well
They'd have to make Sly 4 first.
20:12 this had me furious when it first came out. And I'm still mad they didn't fix them!!!!!
At least the Soul Reaver/ Legacy of Kain franchise will stay safe from any potential rehashes
(Rest in peace Tony Jay)
For now...
Nice Tankmen profile picture.
The reason Spyro 2 and 3 aren’t very polished is Activision. It forced the developers to quickly make the game.
Hense the last two games not being on disk and needing a download..
THE BEST they were still pretty amazing though. And much better than the originals. Of course they should be, and they definitely were in every way imaginable.
@@jessejive117 how did you reach that conclusion?
@@IPITYTHEFOOLZ Activision fanboy, maybe? (Maybe most likely)
I love that his last point for spyro ended up being true that toy's for bob should make a new game. It's just that it was for crash instead.
I could not be happier with them right now
It would be wonderful to see a new Spyro game by these developers!
23:41 this joke literally killed me, I spat out my coffee all over my monitor...
Not just the glitches, but the character animations models weirdly snapping in place and characters control
It less feels like something that has been play tested and more something that got to work and just shipped it out.
Just a heads up- the way you spell "Sheela" is Sheila.
Sheila was ok.
Sargeant Byrd was awful
Bentley was even worse
Agent 9 was the only good one
And Agent 9 used to be my least favorite
25:25 'The game having released almost a decade ago feeling much more impactful.'
'released almost a decade ago.'
'decade'.
Wut?
Oh shit, good catch. My bad.
Seriously you're humour and analytic view is just so enjoyable
I recall when I was listening to Cheshire Cat Studios and that moment when they brought up the analogy of a rock band reunited together and performing their old songs live to an audience and you're left wondering "well, why haven't they written new songs yet?"
That's just my take on things. Still holding hope for the new MediEvil tho and I'm waiting to see what goes on in development.
Good point, and that makes me all the more happy that we have Crash 4 now! Spyro 4 could well be coming next!
I’m really happy I played though all these games 100% without experiencing any glitches
Yeah idk what all these people are talking about. I only experienced 1 glitch
What a great video. Terrifically written and edited. I smashed that maw fuggin sub button

This was a very well structured video with great understanding about many elements of the artistry that goes within video games. keep going bud
I didn't like the baby dragons design
Fan games do a much better job of capturing the look and feel of the originals, and yet there done with a smaller team, no budget, and can take as long as they want.
Because they're... *hint* *hint*
...fans.
Well the key words are “can take as long as they want”.
The motion blur is the number one problem for me. The whole game is a blurry mess why isn't this a larger complaint???
You can turn this off in the settings
@@tish733 Yeah they finally updated it this was at launch when I was having the problem.
@@gamepro94z ah I see, I played the game months after release and I didnt know that was a newly added setting. It would have done my head in if I couldnt turn that off straight away! 😅

@@moesabally1502 There are a lot of issues, but little things like this made the game what it was.
@@ProfessorGroyper
The only issues I can see are some character voices (mostly npcs) sounding generic, the remixed tracks sounding too soft which is not a big deal since I can toggle on the og ost, some minor bugs, and spyro 2 reignited removing the 'all moves' cheat
Any miniscual detail like spyro's hovering animation not looking as childlike as the original is a non issue.
@@moesabally1502
I think the little details matter and it looks like people agree with me.

Another good catch. There's definitely a different level of control there but I shoulda more thoroughly double checked after reignited was through.
Mr Plinkett would be proud, great in dept review.
Tbh I probably would have bought this day one if most of the redesigns didn't look so ass
I'll pick it up eventually but damn

I'm gonna dab on Activision for you, B, hopefully they don't put me in the crazy hous-
As a Spyro fan who loves both the original and remaster. I have to agree most of the points you brought up. I always felt there was something missing with the remaster that made the original loved. I know there will always be something different but they didn’t have to go far to change some of the things that didn’t need to be changed like Ripto’s voice. I have no idea why they told the original voice actor to make Ripto sound like a scrawny little bastard, in the original he sounded more calm yet menacing that was meant to be taken... you know... SERIOUSLY. I can see why this game looked rush and to be honest, that’s sad especially for my beloved game
yo, man, you killed it nice work.
Nitpick but I miss flipping the pages in the guide
speaking of remaking PS1 titles, any thoughts on that upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake (or rather thoughts on what Square wants to do with the remake in terms of the gameplay and visual presentation - and maybe on the production shenanigans that have plagued the game's development since its announcement)?
I have some thoughts. I'm excited as hell for it. I also know that Tetsuya Nomura clearly doesn't know how to manage a project with any degree of efficiency and I don't expect it to be finished any time soon or to have a necessarily clear direction.
@@burnout713 well, his focus is gonna be all in on FF7 remake now, for the first time in like.. 10 years, since Square has been putting him on multiple big projects at once.
Subbed immediatly after that intro. Im gonna be looking out for you man youre hilarious!
I completely agree with everything you said in this video. Thank you for making this. There’s nothing more to say for me.
My god you are so underrated, been watching your vids for awhile now and I'm mad impressed! Keep up the good work!
I do feel like a lot of the urgency was lost in the remakes. :( Everything is played off as laid back, a joke, or just way too lighthearted for what's going on.
So you saw through the ReIgnited whack a mole challenge’s new bullshit too! Glad to see I’m not the only one!
I've been playing these games recently on a emulator since I wanted to know why people love these games so much...and I have to say it's really addicting
The strip mining of old franchises continues: in both games and film.
It's not our fault Activision rushed this project out the door and it's not our fault that these remastered games are, in quite a number of instances, simply not as good as the original source material.
thats the point tho, producers forcing game creators to make a better version of games that were made in 3 years in this time 1 year shouldn't happen, but sadly it will still happen since for activision this worked out just fine
i agree, but that was a point he did make in the video.
@@burnout713 way to state the obvious in the most dick-isg way possible.
You sound like the child complaining they got the wrong color toy at Xmas
Then they shouldn't have accepted the job if they can't do it right. We see this a lot where the producer pushes the developer to make shorter and shorter deadlines so they can get their sweet, sweet profits faster and end up pumping out worse and worse games.
Games have been steadily declining for a while now and I'd say that this current generation is some of the worse trash we've ever seen.
For those curious, the song in the beginning is a remix of Dvorák's "New World" Symphony, movement IV. Idk who remixed it but it's for sure a remix of that

@@mikecosmo That's right! Terror Time from Scooby Doo on Zombie Island!
Well, there was that fan-made remake of Dimitri's office that was pretty good, but I'd rather see that art style applied to a new game than backported to the old.
love the song at the end of the video from Scooby doo on zombie island.
shut up
Couldn't agree more with all points. I wish I had something more interesting to say but you nailed everything I was thinking.
Who knows?
i agree with the majority of this video
though maybe i just got lucky, but i didn't
experience really any bugs when i played it on the pc
version (other then having to limit my FPS to 130 so the sliding bug doesn't occur)
for me, the remaster has completely replaced the originals
The small number of bad changes (like shrek gnorcs and shit Sheila) make me rage. And not allow this version to be definitive.
Also, good on Sanzaru for finding some more work. They deserve the money.
It was really good that their work was the sloppiest of the three, yes
I know that 1 was pretty much done, while 2 and 3 were essentially in pre-pre-alpha stage and were barely playable, a few months before the eventual release date. Other companies were invited to finish the games as fast as humanely possible.
And speaking of sloppy, I see you are a-okay with concept artist putting his buff dudes (not calling it by the japanese word) fetish into 1, ruining many dragon designs for me (but not you as I see).
I agree that the lack of subtitles reduces accessibility. I hope they’ve been included in a later versions.
Damn, I can't believe I just found this video on a whim. Every single thing you said is so spot on
It's not the Sly 3 review I was hoping for, but I am glad to have another amazing video of yours to watch! Outstanding content!
