    Just wanted to say that I have probably watched 30+ of your videos over the past 2 months. You've definitely reignited my interest in Civ, though I'm in that tricky spot of not being sure whether I enjoy watching people who are better than me at the game, or getting annoyed with my own (innumerable) mistakes. I have made sure all of my civ playing friends are clued into you, as you have quickly become one of my favourite streamers. Keep up the amazing work, I'm optimistic that the TH-cam algorithm will recognise your quality, in the same was as it has for one of my other faves RCE (Real Civil Engineer!).

    For anyone wondering how to pronounce porphyrogennetos, it is roughly:
    Por-fee-ro-GEN-ne-tos
    Capitalized is the accented variable.

  • @gustavinus

    And he already won this game. Even with the Cree having a lot of science, just the size and strength of Ursa's empire already made him the winner. He could even change to almost any other victory type if he wanted. Unless Ursa makes some crazy rule that makes him lose, this is already won. Just curious to see how. Needs some campuses to catch up...

    • @UrsaRyan
      @UrsaRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When "proper" Rome gets rolling, its hilarious. Will be interesting to see how much of a tech gap, and if campus pillage and sheer numbers of troops (and citizens) can overcome more than the usual Diety gap.

    Fun fiction: Byzantines believe their horses run super fast from racing a lot in the hippodrome that you can make a religion out of it, so their horses can ram into walls and basically melting them when the sieged city's people believe so too.

    Just to help out, Porphyrogennetos is pronounced: Por-fyr-oh-gen-eh-tos. It means 'Born in the Purple,' and refers to the Roman/Byzantine tradition of putting the children of the emperors in purple swaddling clothes when born. As purple was the most expensive dye at the time, it was a method of showing off the wealth of the empire while also serving to reinforce the legitimacy of those born into the imperial family.

    Feels like you’re missing a trick not beelining Shipbuilding after Astrology. Byzantium is the perfect dual-threat civ, and you can get dromons not long after your religion, and long before tagmas.

    • @UrsaRyan
      @UrsaRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True - but people often overlook horsemen with Byzantium. Dromons are great at starting your religious spread but horses get the cities captured fast

    fun fact, if you have already converted and taken the capital of all the civs in the game except one, then take the final civ's capital, you will actually win a religious victory first instead of a domination victory if the loss of that city results in the final civ being converted to your religion

  • @vasilispapadopoulos4397
    @vasilispapadopoulos4397 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Porphyrogennetos means “the one who was born in Porphyra” (Porphyra being a room in the Byzantine quarters and the lovely colour we see Basil wearing).. in general Porphyrogennetos is literally , the one who was born while his father was the Emperor..

    • @vasilispapadopoulos4397

      Also hoplite literally translates to “the one who caries a shield”

  • @Lern2Read
    @Lern2Read 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Porphyrogennetos! (Por-fir-again-eh-tose) It means "born in the purple" and referred to emperors who were legitimate sons of prior emperors. The Byzantines didn't really have a problem with people taking the throne by force - they figured if you were good enough to seize the throne you'd probably be a good emperor. Therefore they made up a fun term for emperors who got there the old-fashioned way. My favorite emperor, Constantine VII, is sometimes called Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_VII

    1:53 "We have abundant start positions."
    Is this your way of reiterating that there are extra civs for the map size? Lol, misspeaking can be quite amusing at times. For example, I'll never forget the time my Mum got mixed up when writing a shopping list such that it advised me to buy "Cadbury mince."

    • @UrsaRyan
      @UrsaRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha - no it's the option that allows extra resources at everyones capital - yeah my words muddle much

  • @SweenyMarc
    @SweenyMarc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This episode ended too quickly! Such a great start. It's obviously not going to matter as you are already absolutely smashing the AI but I can't believe you turned down so much production from God of the Sea for a slightly earlier Prophet. In fact, it was such a resource rich start there were loads of viable choices and unless you're going culture victory Divine Spark always feels lacklustre to me. It probably meant you got Feed the World but a Prophet a couple turns later would still surely have had Crusade available and if FtheW was gone there still would have been a lot of interesting choices thanks to extended religions.

    • @UrsaRyan
