every time I have an issue with my R56 I always find myself referring to your videos. I'm currently dealing with a traveling misfire that started on 1 cylinder, then it jumped to 2, and then finally when I was able to baby the car 45 minutes back home it plagued all 4 cylinders. My brother and his best friend swear up and down that it's just bad fuel but my girlfriend and I got fuel from the same station within hours of each other (both turbo cars requiring premium-91/93) and she never had any issue. I've got just over 80,000 and I'm convinced that the fuel filter has probably never been changed, and the HPFP, from what I've researched, can fail pretty early on in the cars lifespan. So my plan was to start with the filter, do a compression test, and then get some injector cleaner to see if that can help revive my mini that has been sitting in my garage for the past 5 months untouched. Then once I get everything sorted I'm in dire need of a walnut blasting to get rid of all the carbon build up.

2012 Mini Cooper Countryman base had misfire with codes on cylinder 2 and 4. Replaced both ignition coils and problem cleared up. I did do a resistance check with a multi-meter against the new coils and all coils came back as .06-.07.

I had ramdom misfire and loss of power recently. When i looked around I noticed a lot of oil below. The oil return line gasket seemed to have failed and leaked all of my oil out, except one quart. Do you think the low oil could have cracked a piston or bent a rod. Temperatures seemsed normal at the the time of the incident, as I run a live scanner all the time. Car is idling rough and saw a little smoke from the area.

Need help w cold / startup misfires.
Completely new build. Rebore to 77.5, new HPFP, LPFP filterhead etc. Misfires are across all cylinders on start up but seem to be most on Cyl 1. Misfires start after car goes into closed loop mode. The first 20-30 sec it runs smooth w no misfires. Then as RPM fall from 1100-1200 to 800-900 idle they start and the car runs rough. Seems to be as it goes into closed loop. Revving slightly to 1800-2000 and holding it there make them go away. They recur when released back down to idle. Once warmed up 3-4 min she's totally fine and on the road a dream.
Pre start resting rail pressure is 70-90 psi. HPFP is new and runs good fuel pressure as compared to my other R56. Changed coil packs. Checked and cleaned VANOS x2. As a new build I had some milling debris on first start but have changed oil x4 and oil analysis looks good so far. I have not checked the cyl head check valve or the timing chain tensioner oil passages yet.
The car has Cat Cam street cams, JCW manifold and turbo. It's not tuned yet. Tuner said misfires aren't fixed w a tune. But it just seems odd that the car runs misfire free for first 30 sec.
    Any help appreciated. Thx.

The car was and continues to misfire and act "jerky" when first warming up. Once up to temp it runs fine. There is a check engine light quoting multiple misfires. Could it be the coils? Or the last spark plug? Running out of idea's :( Please help!

I have a question for you I have an 09 Mini with 1.6L turbo. This car has a miss fire under 2200 RPMS. Has new coil pack and plugs, all 4 cylinders has 175 psi compression, has spark and injector pulse, fuel injector is good. When driving with scan tool hooked up the miss is not present above 2200 RPMS or so. I have removed the valve cover to check the valve train for broken valve spring, rounded lobes on cam all is good there as well. I looked up the timing procedure while the valve cover was off to check the timing as well, the cams seem to be in time ( I do not have the special tool for timing ). The actuator on the intake cam does not match the position of the exhaust cam. Does the actuator position matter on this motor. There is no mention of that in the timing procedure. This is a used car so I have no history on the car other than when I had the valve cover off the timing looked brand new. Any help would be great.

Merci !

2010 R56 S 95k miles. Had the car for 7 months and 4k mi. New (real) NGK plugs on 7/20/20 82800mi, good gaps still. NO CODES. Data logged with Bimmerlink when cold each time. In the last couple of weeks I have had a misfire when cold on plugs 1-2-4. I have obtained a used set of coils (?mi) and swapped them out 1:1 from the other car, I will spare you the swapping details going forward but nothing changed. I have swapped plugs around and nothing changed. The hesitation and missing is very slight is more pronounced when cold but imperceptible when warm. Misfire happens at highway speeds. The HPFP will get down to 550psi at 122deg misfire cyl 4. but will get to 550-700psi when cold with cyl 1-2-4 misfiring. The misfires on 1-4 also happen at 1200-1600psi with the temp at operating. I do not know the status of the fuel filter but always use top tier fuel of Shell/QT. Complicated huh? Yeah I know its a problem child/mini life. Going to Mini's on the Dragon in 1 week need this sorted. missing happens on all cylinders, all temps, any time. Just more pronounced at cold.

Misfire on cylinder 2 & 3 on my R56. Cylinder 3 ignition coil wasn’t snug to the spark plug and cylinder 2 had a bad spark plug. Misfire caused engine light, rough idle, lack of power, and a slight knock. I ended replacing all four spark plugs and ignition coils. Runs a lot smoother and reactive with no engine light. Still has a vibrating idle. I’m assuming fuel injectors and exhaust manifold need cleaning.

The mechanic advised that an electrician should check and he came up with another story of a faulty brain box. I have not enjoyed this car even for a whole day. The problem started days after purchasing it. it started with a slow movement they claimed it was a result of a lack of turbo not charging, later it started shredding fan belts and up to 8 belts were damaged. Now the belt issue is rectified but the misfiring still persists. I need some advice is there any chance that the misfiring problem can be associated with the brainbox problem please help me.

You probably won't be able to see the valves with a borescope, the camera would be pointing down and the valve would be behind the camera.

So I just got this Mini Cooper and I’m driving on highway then it starts hesitating on moving with rpm’s up/down. The check engine light came on. I got to my destination, shut off an turned right on and engine light gone but rpm’s are still lagging. What’s a good starting point. History says engine serviced back in 2016

So I have a 2009 mini Cooper s turbo i was driving car it seemed fine I did have a check engine light on but code was only for thermostat not opening at set temperature and a certain time . Car had no misfires at first but then I started driving on the free way decided to give it a little more throttle and car rpm’s dropped reving down then check engine began to flash bogging out . I then pulled over checked codes giving me random misfires . I cleared codes then cycled key again to get proper codes giving me misfire on cylinder 2&4 I removed spark plug and plug was burnt . I replaced spark plugs and both coils for cylinder 2&4 . Cleared codes and error still persisted . Fault was for the same cylinder still I then removed plugs again and cylinder 2&4 were dampen with fuel . I began to test injectors with scanner each operating normal . I haven’t tested for compression but if someone has some tips on this that would be great . There’s nothing on TH-cam

My mini has had random misfires in cyl 2,3,4 and I’ve already replaced spark plugs, tested coil packs, prev owner replaced hpfp, I cleaned the intake valves, and yet it stills misfires. My car has feels super sluggish and when I floor it inside the cabin starts smelling like fresh gas. I’m thinking maybe there’s a fuel line in the bay that’s cracked or an injector leaking or clogged.

sounds like my 2010 I'm having a misfire multiple cylinders. I've replaced the coil packs, plugs, hpfp, fuel filter. Mine runs great though it's only cold starts that give it the code. Have you checked your fuel filter? That thing is a bitch to get on and off. If the previous owner replaced that with the fuel pump like I did maybe he didn't get it to seal correctly and you're losing pressure and getting that smell. easy enough to inspect. You should be able to see the hpfp leaking pretty easily.

Having a random misfire code across all cylinders, car shows no noticeable misfire or faulty idle.
Spark plugs, coil packs, fuel filter, valves, guides, timing chain, valve seats, vanos all replaced, car runs and idles perfectly.....and still throws random misfire codes on all cylinders.

Hello, I have a 2010 Cooper S Clubman and currently in the process of changing out all spark plugs and 2/4 coils. After doing a diagnostic I got a P2195 code; On top of a P0300, 0301, 0303. The one code I have a main question is P000A code which says Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1. Is this something major I need to get checked at a garage or will this issue resolve itself when I complete the plug and coil replacement. Sir, thanks for your help. I have a 2008 R55 which just earlier today started running rough and was down on power. I have been driving for 50 years and do most of my own maintenance, so I immediately thought it was down a cylinder. When I got it home, I left it running and disconnected the coil packs one at a time. Number 2 was the only one that didn't affect the idle, so that gave me a clue. I pulled and cleaned the #2 plug (it wasn't bad at all, and the plugs are fairly new). No change. I then hooked up my code reader and it also says #2 misfire. Sorry for the long intro, my question is, what are the chances a new coil pack would fix the problem? There's only one shop within 50 miles that will touch a Mini, and they're ridiculously expensive. THANKS!

    • @CraftyWorkshopBuilds
      @CraftyWorkshopBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ok, I see. Switch #2 coil pack with one of the other coil pack from one of the working cylinders, and see if the misfire follows.

got an question: my r56 2013 with N18 engine and 54.000 kilometers on the clock is running rough in stand, in cold condition of the engine the rpm is moving up and down, sometimes falls down to like 500rpm and nearly dies but then moving up rpm again.
spark plugs and service is only 1500 kilometers and 2 months old, timing was checken two weeks ago and was great, the workshop said…
NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT and no trouble code.
what do you think? I would say maybe its the tensioner, maybe air ratio sensor or even lambda? or maybe its the vanos (variable cam) on one side or on both?
high pressure fuel pump I would say is okay so far, because when moving the engine runs fine and has its power.
would be nice to hear from you, I can send you videos of the car idling if you want to, maybe we can communicate somewhere else?
    Greetings from Germany!
    Cheers! Nico

when the engine is warmed up its running most time relatively smooth, only moving rpm a little and sometimes runs fine when warm. and the big issue with the rpm falling down and nearly dies only happens when cold.

    Same issue with my R56
My vehicle was running very very rough to the point where the whole car was shaking. Losing power.
We scanned the car and got a cylinder 4 misfire. We changed all spark plugs and coil pack and it made no difference. So my mechanic then did a pressure test and one of the cylinders had 60psi. He didn't know what to do after but advised it maybe the piston rings but it will be very expensive and a new engine plus labour is financially pointless. So he advised I maybe better off selling or scrapping the car. This video really helps so I'm gonna go back and show the mechanic.

My 2010 R56 N14 Cooper S Turbo has a misfire. #4 cylinder. Compression read #4 at 30 psi. Two others read 125 and one at 170. Maybe, I think, not sure. Except for sure #4. Anyway. When first owner mechanic said valve job or replace engine I went to a Mini mechanic for a second opinion Told him what's up and got from him almost same.
