Asaph was a leader of one of David’s levitical choirs. He is the one who compiled Psalms 73-83. This does not necessarily mean that he wrote them all. In this Psalm, he is describing a dilemma that he is struggling with in his own mind. The two conflicting thoughts he was struggling with were (1) The wicked prosper, leaving godly people wondering why they bother to be good (vs. 3) and (2) The wealth of the wicked looks so inviting that faithful people may wish they could trade places with them. (vs. 5) I would say that each of us has to some degree wrestled with these same thoughts in our own minds.
These types of passages in the Bible are very encouraging to me. Sometimes I may not be able to relate to the Daniels or Elijahs in the Bible, but I can relate to my thinking being all wrong. I can relate to being confuse, and questioning if it is worth it. I can also relate to God in His mercy and longsuffering getting my attention. I can relate to God turning me completely
around, and getting me to be thinking right again, having the right attitude again, and getting the right perspective again. Thank God for His mercy and His grace. Perhaps you can relate to the Psalmist this morning. Perhaps you needed to be reminded of some things. Perhaps after getting in God”s presence, you would say, “My attitude, thoughts, and perspective have already started changing from what they were just an hour ago.” Psalm 73:17,28 “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.”
