    My favorite part of the fight between Zoro and Mihawk is the fact that at the beginning Mihawk kept referring to Zoro as "weak one" but by the end of the fight he refers to him as "strong one" not in the physical sense but because of his strong spirit

    There is a certain warrior's code that every great warrior follows. Mihawk kills pirates in droves since he hardly ever finds any of these people following their resolve of a warrior. When Zoro said "Scars on a swordsman's back is a sign of their discrace" and offered himself to Mihawk to kill, Mihawk found this resolve in Zoro. That is why he cut him (to avoid disrespecting Zoro's resolve) but not kill him (to see how he will become).

    Mihawk design took inspiration from both the Spanish Conquistador & Dracula.
    Him having the Conquistador feathered hats & facial features and being Christian (themed in Mihawk case) warrior who wields a blade.
    Mihawk obvious Dracula inspiration beings his name being Dracule. His ship being a coffin. Him having candles on his ship (there's more, no spoilers).
    Dracula fearing being stabbed in the chest by a cross stake.
    Meanwhile Mihawk wears a cross blade on his chest & carried a ridiculously large cross blade on his back.
    Oda has used alot of real life people, popular TV/movie/book characters, historical past figures, famous tales for alot of character designs & there themes.

  • @mossicely
    @mossicely ปีที่แล้ว +20

    This episode really does do so much for the show by increasing those stakes and showing the true danger and randomness of the grand line. I have to say, there are so many reactions that just do surface level recaps in a way that doesnt add anything to the show. Your reactions are not like that, and it is sometimes difficult to find. Most of the reason I have been following your watch of one piece is because of the analysis you give at the end of each episode, because that's what I enjoy is seeing different perspectives and mutual understanding of something that I already love. I appreciate the effort you put in for that, you sometimes bring up things that I never even noticed before despite watching this show so many times, and that hasn't gone unnoticed.

    Zoro's goal hasn't changed. It was always to be the best swordsman in the world and surpass Dracule Mihawk. You're right, that's as tough as the Grand Line will look like. The best are on his level, at least.

    a thing I love about OP so much is how significant characters get introduced, done with such style and so memorable. It's not simply man walks in and is like "it is me, important man here to be important". some characters in this wander in and for an episode or two think they might not even be That significant. It's great.

  • @Jest_say_n

    I rarely post on TH-cam, but I really really like your analysis of this show. As a person that grew up in the 70s watching Japanese original animations and movies, I love their style of storytelling. It still amazes me that no matter the medium used the character development is so damn good. I think they could use stick figures and make them deep.
    It is hard for me to watch at this pace because I know all of the glorious discoveries that await and how you will fall deeper for this show, HOLD ON! WE ARE!!😊

  • @kodytiffany5686
    @kodytiffany5686 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With Mihawk; I think Oda was thinking of Monty Python but decided against rabbits and holy grenades.
    So he thought "No body expects the Spanish Inquistion..." and so Mihawk was designed with the Christian elements and possibly a Spanish flair.
    Thats my theory and I am sticking to it.
    Have not read the SBS's (Q&A Oda addition that ends all volumes of the manga).

    It's crazy that they introduce Mihawk so early on in the show, when we're not even in the Grand Line yet. One Piece does that often though, will introduce a concept or a character that won't reallh play a role until much later. And it's so good!

    Yea, that moment with Hawkeye, and the promise from Zoro to Luffy--chef's kiss. One of my favorite moments of the series, and one of those rare moments we get to see Zoro in his feels. Really sets him up for his objective, and helps set the scale/threat of the Grand Line.

    I feel like sometimes "western" religion and related topics and iconography get understood very strangely in Asia. To the degree that sometimes I wonder if some people even realize crosses are religious at all....
    I think his cross between Renaissance/Spanish style swordsman and vampire aesthetic got kinda applied oddly in Mihawk's character design. Like the translation from vampires sleeping in coffins to sailing on a tiny coffin ship is certainly an unusual application of associated themes. and the crosses, at least the sword, is supposed to be a Spanish Renaissance cross but I suppose vampires also do have cross associations.

    The manga had Zoro's backstory flashback during the Morgan arc, the anime moved it forward. It was presumably done so you get Zoro's full story at once, with both the Kuina and Mihawk elements of it getting established within a few episodes of each other, but it does make Zoro initially feel a bit oddly purposeless in a way that wasn't really intended. I don't think it was all that good a desicion.

    usually, people don't like the setup because it feels slow, but there are many layers and storytelling beats that make it a better quality compared to most anime for world-building purposes. Compared to FMA where you're pacing through 55ish eps to get to the end. OP usually comes down to the viewer's attention span, which is subjective and not an objective reason to not watch it. It does suffer from pacing issues later on, but the story is still there. 3eps is like a 1hr 5mins compared to 1 episode of [insert generic crime show or talent show] (so most people could do 900eps in 300 days theoretically at that 3eps a night pace) so not enough time excuse I hear doesn't track because you can always drop it?? If you don't like it, but it will always be there to provide good storytelling...while most shows drop off or get cancelled... so why not??

Plus, he has 20 years of training, and experience over Zoro. Of course he is that much stronger. The cutting of the ship, that will make sense eventually. Mihawk's Christianity is tied into the "looking like a vampire" part of his design, more than to actual Christianity. The man sails in a coffin xD
    I don't mind younger protagonists in shonen but it wouldn't fit as well in One Piece. In a lot of Shonen with very young protagonists like Naruto or My Hero Academia, the heroes aren't alone, they have a school or a mentor, a structure for their safety. Luffy is just sailing on his own with his friends in super dangerous seas infested with monsters and superhuman pirates.
    HxH is an example of shonen with very young protagonists (12 at the beginning iirc) who travel alone, but the world of HxH is on the whole very similar to ours (at least at the start), it's not that dangerous for very strong 12 years old to travel alone, the world of One Piece is much less civilised in comparison.
